You aren't blocking it if the light is green for you. Only if you fail to get through before the light is red.

If you wait behind the limit line when turning left on a green light against oncoming traffic, you are actually more of a hazard to pull out when the light turns red and you pull in front of cross traffic cars that have started to cross the intersection that just got a green light. I've paid particular attention to this since I wrote about it and have observed cops pulling out part way into the intersection.

The other issue in Pasadena California is there used to be a red light camera near Cal-Tech. They finally took it down because 99% of the pictures were people who were legally pulled into the intersection and allowed to finish their turn, even though the light just turned red.

Why would you pull into the intersection if the light has turned red?
Finish their turn? Their turn is not until the light is green an the intersection is clear.
People pulling out and waiting in the intersection hoping they will get across before the light turns red are causing accidents.

Minus the WO.

How about those men with little peckers who are trying to prove something?

Actually, the light is green, the intersection is clear, AND THEY CAN PROCEED SAFELY. If a car is in the intersection and can proceed safely, it has the right of way. The question of who has the right of way is different from the question of who violated which ordinance. And the question of whether one can proceed safely is different from the question of what color the light is.

Basing one's decisions on the rule book and the color of a light is a way of avoiding personal responsibility.

Perhaps some states have different laws for pulling out before making left turns.

Common sense should tell you not to enter the intersection unless you can get through it.

Absolutely wrong. In some intersections you would never be able to turn left if you did that. You are a bigger hazard to cross traffic if you start to go when the light is turning red.
We obviously do not see the same intersection. This is why they do not allow turning left on green without an arrow at the type of intersection you must be talking about.
and I am not absolutely wrong.
While entering the intersection on a green light to make a left turn is legal (in most states), it is not manditory. I prefer to wait at the limit line until traffic is clear. If it doesn't clear, I'll wait through another light or two....especially in Vegas...where I'm in no hurry.

You get it. I wish Tree Girl got it.

Let me give you an example. Near Pasadena City College there is heavy traffic at the intersection of Colorado and Hill. They finally put in a green arrow light for those wanting to turn left. Before that, there was only a green light. Now if I wait behind the line to turn left, only ONE car can go per light rotation, meaning the cars behind that car will be fuming mad, because it is a very long light. If I wait behind the light until the light starts to turn yellow or even red and then go (which would be my right), I then start to create a dangerous hazard for the cross traffic that has started into the intersection on their green. They have no knowledge that I had the right to turn. Do you see the problem?
