Xmas in Vegas Advice

I hope that you will regale us with a complete trip report afterward. I would like to know how it is a Christmas time as well.
Xmas in Vegas Advice: Be good, Santa's watching.
Did Vegas over Christmas a couple years ago. Had a really good time. Cold outside. Not too busy on Christmas Eve and morning, lots of local families came to eat the strip buffets. By Christmas night and next day half of southern Cal had driven in for the long weekend.
On Monday I calculated that I have 4 vacation days which must be used by year's end, so Vegas came to mind. My kids leave to Florida on Christmas eve, so Christmas day through Dec 28 was my plan. This morning I checked flight prices and found that my flight would run $962. Apparently everyone else in Indianapolis has the same idea. I then checked room rates at the Golden Nugget and their web sight said "Call for rates", and gave no pricing. That was more than enough to stop my plan in it's tracks.

I've now developed a new plan, and driving 3 hours to downtown Chicago (Old Town area) on the 26th to visit and stay with a buddy. Then it's off to the West suburbs on the 27th and 28th to visit my brother and sister-in-law, and finally to Palatine on the 29th to visit various friends. I'm bummed about not making it to Vegas, but this will be a nice time.
