My first trip was when I won a contest selling mutual funds. Needed $250,000 to qualify. We had a chartered jet that stopped at the airport next to MaCarren. Forget the name. Buses picked us up. It was a Thursday night. First we had a dinner show....remember those guys?....at the Stardust...Lido de Paris. First topless show I ever saw. I think I only brought $400 with me. When we go back to the hotel....Caesers...we played $1 BJ.
Next night we had another dinner show at the Sands, and there were two performers. Diane Carroll was the second performer and we walked out on her. Forget who the other performer was that night. So we go to the casino, and I watched a woman who was a regular at the dice table, throw down a nickel on boxcars (12) and it it right on the money. She picked up her winnings and the the dealers a toke and said she was going to dinner. When she left, we heard a lot of noise at a dice table. Seems like two New York guys were up plenty of money and the table was going nuts. Heard the next day they had won over $100,000.
Saturday night was our dinner show at Caesers and I had my first Caesers salad made right at the table. It was great, but I never thought I'd ever eat anything made with a raw egg and anchovies. The headliner that night was Andy Williams. During the day, we went to the pool and Sonny and Cher were there just after Cher had Chastity. You could see her scar from the childbirth(incision). Joining them were the Fifth Dimension who stopped by to say hello.
Across the street at the Flamingo, Tom Jones was appearing and some of the guys wives were dying to see him in person. When a few guys went across the street to see if they could "bribe" the maitre de to get them seats. They offered him $100...which was a lot back then...to get them seats. His classic comment was, " One hundred dollars will get you a seat on the chandelier!"
Ate breakfast the next day in the coffee shop and was right next to Claudine Longet, Williams wife. She was with their kids.
I remember looking out our window, which faced the strip, and saying, "They just can't build any more on the strip, there's no more room!" Where Bally's now sits, there was a casino called Bonanza where they had real cowboy swinging gates when you entered. The dealers all wore string ties.
I wasn't awake to witness the event, but supposedly Frank Sinatra came walking through the casino
It was one of my most memorable trips to Vegas.
