A few questions

Hi guys,

My partner and I will be visiting Vegas from the UK in March, staying the Flamingo. I'm trying to decide whether to buy a coupon book (or even two).

I've watched the YouTube video about the book which cleared up some questions, but I have a few more.

Is there a site (or section of this site) that explains how to maximise the gambling coupons? Which games to play for which stakes in which casinos etc.

I assume you can't get comped drinks while using free play at a bar?

Is the 20% off at Oscars during happy hour only off happy hour items or all food? Does it apply to drinks too?

We won't have a car, how easy would it be to walk from the Flamingo to the office to pick up the book?

Any advice will be gratefully received 🙂

There's been several issues of LVA, including the present one, where how to best use the coupons is discussed. Downtown Vegas is the place to go if you want maximum efficiency/value. There's over $120 in expected value available, about half of it free play. If you don't have a car available, you won't be able to utilize all of the book's coupons, but all the downtown offers are within easy walking distance. BTW, the two glasses of champagne at the top of the Circa is a new coupon, and it allows you to see the newest glitzy joint downtown. You have four 2-for-1 dining options for when you get hungry--I like Magnolia's, which is centrally located. (BTW it's not part of the LVA coupon thing, but several of the downtown casinos give you free play just for signing up for their players' club, and you can piggyback that on top of the coupon. For instance, Four Queens has been giving new signups $10 free play since time immemorial. So sign up for every players' club--you'll have to do that anyway to utilize the coupons.)

My maximization strategy is: play video poker with the free play. Play it through once and cash out--don't continue playing, regardless of how well you do. Matchplays--bet them on an even-money outcome such as Pass or Don't Pass, or (a bit worse odds-wise) one spin of the roulette wheel. Cash out if you win and walk away. If you have any "play x get y" coupons, play that exact amount, get the freeplay reward, play that, then walk away. (As you might imagine, these coupons rarely cost the casinos anything because people keep playing until the money's gone; my strategy is to do the exact opposite.)

The only oddball one is the blackjack pays 2 for 1 coupon at the Golden Gate. This one is worth about half of a bet, so if you play the maximum of $25/hand, it's worth $12.50. But there's the danger that you could lose a bunch while waiting for that blackjack to come along. The same risk applies to the play x get y coupons. Use those ONLY for video poker (not slots; slots are radioactive, poisonous, AND fattening.)

You can definitely get comped drinks while using free play at a bar. The bartender won't care where your machine credits came from. The same goes, of course, for cocktail waitress service at the regular machine banks. Tip generously.

The 20% at Oscar's is off the total bill.

Walking from the Flamingo to LVA and back...it's a little over 2 miles, and frankly, the walk has little to recommend it: it goes through a fairly barren commercial/industrial area. I'd just get the book mailed to you, unless the cost of that is prohibitive if it's going to the UK. You walk 4+ miles, that's a couple of Vegas vacation hours you could be spending doing, you know, Vegas. (And BTW a taxi over and back, or a Lyft or Uber, is not a terrible idea, and wouldn't cost all that much.)

Since there will be two of you, buy two books. It's pretty much a no-brainer. You can have a fun day downtown, visit most of the casinos, and make back more than the cost of the book(s) at the same time.

Also wanted to add that the Deuce bus is the best way to get downtown from the Flamingo. Buy a bus day pass; it's only slightly more than a two-hour ticket and gives you the option of checking out places on the Strip on the way there or back.

Work your way up to the upper deck of the bus if at all possible. It's like a sightseeing tour. The double deckers will remind you of home--just don't look the wrong way, like I did when I was in London and almost got flattened :)

Thanks Kevin, that's an incredibly comprehensive response, I'm glad you didn't get flattened by that bus! 😃

I'm not the expert as a former resident and employee but have been to LV 8 times since 1997.  I've stayed 4x each on the strip and DT.  I love DT because of the history but recommend the strip for 1st timers.  I will order 1 coupon book in my name and 1 in my wife's name.

We are staying DT at 4Q.  Yes! Magnolia Cafe is great!.  We will use the match plays and 2/1.  Do not miss DT and if you decide to come, use the match plays and 2/1.

I will take advantage of the bus Kevin mentioned.  For the 1st time ever I will be able to enjoy myself w/o the worry of parking or hitting someone in the rear while checking the sights. You must see the strip and DT to get your money's worth.

This trip will be part of my 18 day retirement trip.  I will use LVA to take full advantage of these coupons.  I'll be there 9 or more days and will have my car for exploring.

Wish I was already retired!

I've been to Vegas a similar number of times to you and was planning to stay downtown next time I went, but my partner has never been so I thought the strip would be a better bet.

Will have to add Magnolias to the our list but we've already got more places to eat than meals we could reasonably fit in!

Enjoy your 18 day break, I'm sure you've earned it!

A couple other great promotions that don't require a coupon:

1) At the D and El Cortez, show them your boarding pass within 24 hours of landing and get free matchplays plus a free drink at El Co.

2) At several casinos on the south end of the strip, go to the cashier and ask for the promotional chip deal. You get $30 of promo chips for $20. Last summer this deal was still active at Mandalay Bay and NYNY. (Maybe at Excalibur, but by the time we got there I'd been over-served and had abandoned detailed notes.

Enjoy!

Thanks Matt, never heard of the promotional chips thing South strip.

I plan to be over-served too but will give it a go 😁

I'll utilize Kevin's reference of the bus. I will finally be able to enjoy myself without worrying about parking or running into someone while taking in the sights. For your money's worth, you need to view the strip and DT.

To get the LVA book, you may be able to send it directly to your hotel.

Before I retired I used to send packages to the hotel ahead of going to trade meetings. I would address the package to me with my arrival date and then on the next line have "care of" the hotel I was staying at, with their address. It also can't hurt to let the hotel know ahead of time that you're expecting a package.

I wouldn't send this too early to the hotel, may be a week or so for your arrival. It would save you a trip to their offices and would definitely be a lot less expensive than sending the book overseas. Also there's no chance of you forgetting to bring the book with you.

Totally agree with Kevin on the value of the LVA book downtown versus the strip. Downtown is a much better value, and all of the casinos are pretty much within easy walking distance of each other. On the strip you could often walk a quarter mile or so to hit the next casino, And on the strip, once you get to the next casino it's only going to be another place that is overpriced, and in my opinion, overrated
