It's your site and you can do with it whatever you like! That said to remove all of the previous forums and posts that the members of your site put a lot of time and effort into and drove a TON of traffic to YOUR site is a slap in the face to every member who took the time to do so! I just don't see what harm the old forums/posts were doing. I can only guess the cost of migrating the old forums and posts to the new "improved" site was cost prohibitive...
