One skill set you need is judging when to take the long way around. For instance, if you were going from Red Rock to Henderson, your natural inclination might be to take Summerlin Parkway to downtown and then south on I-515 or Boulder Highway. You'll actually get there faster, especially during times of congestion, by taking the big loop counterclockwise on the Beltway.
I agree about L.A. I've wondered how many people per year die behind the wheel while sitting on the freeway. Must be in the thousands. Since a large chunk of the new Vegas residents are from southern CA, they probably feel the same way you do--"This is nothing!"
