Effective Oct. 29, the Club Coast rewards program has changed from coin-out to coin-in. Every dollar of coin-in played is worth one point with points redeemable at the exchange rate of 1000 points for $1 in cash back or comps. Players with existing accounts have had their point balances adjusted so the dollar value of points earned before Oct. 29 is worth the same under the new system. For example, if a player had 25,000 worth $75 under to the old system, the points total was adjusted on Oct. 29 to 75,000 making it worth the same $75 in cash back or comps.
In addition, Club Coast members will be rewarded three times points for every dollar of coin-in played until January 14, 2008.
Officials at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino have inked a deal that will bring the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction to Las Vegas next year on Oct. 16-18. The Las Vegas event will host 600 collector cars for auction and feature live music, a fashion show and merchandise and memorabilia for sale. Billed as the Super Bowl of auto auctions, this year’s Barrett-Jackson event attracted more than 250,000 people to its Scottsdale, AZ locations and coverage was featured on cable television. Mandalay Bay was able to land the event when negotiations for a long-term deal between Scottsdale and Barrett-Jackson officials recently reached an impasse.
Following yesterday's Question of the Day, which compared Canadian to US dollar exchange rates at various casino cages, we got a call from the CFO at the El Cortez today. In the answer, we drew attention to the fact that the cage there was still stuck with a historic exchange rate of only 70 cents to $1CDN, but that's all changed. The QoD prompted them to take immediate action and their rate is now directly linked to the fluctuating daily currency values. Today you can get exactly $1 for $1CDN from their cashier's cage. Nice one!

Granted, Halloween's practically a redundant concept in Las Vegas but the big difference this weekend is that freakish fashion, macabre makeup, and bizarre behavior can win you some cold, hard cash if you're in the right place at the right time. Costume contests can be found between now and Oct. 31 at nearly every nightspot in town including Blush, Triq, Pure, LAX, Rain, Diablo’s Cantina, Body English, Cherry and Studio 54 just to name a few. Late additions to the list of party hosts include Hogs 'n Heifers, Carnaval Court at Harrah's, and rumjungle at Mandalay Bay. The more adventurous partygoer won’t want to miss the 12th Annual Fetish & Fantasy Ball on Saturday night at Alexis Park Resort where almost anything goes.
Family-friendly celebrations can also be found around town. Local merchants including Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, the Cupcakery, DuBarry Fasions, and Peoples Auto Center all have special Halloween-themed events planned for this weekend. Sunset Station will host two separate parties at their Strike Zone Bowling Center –- an early get-together for the small fry and a late night soiree for the adults.
But with the annual Vegoose festival in town, it's music that's really dominating the scene this weekend. Just check out his lineup!

It's back to the drawing board for the controversial Crown Las Vegas tower, planned for the former site of the Wet 'n Wild water park. After a prolonged standoff with the Federal Aviation Administration, developer Christopher Milam has shaved his planned 1,888-foot, 142-story pinnacle to a proposed 1,150 feet -- not coincidentally, one foot higher than the nearby Stratosphere Tower. By proposing a new lower height, Milam sets the clock on the approval process back to zero, and may buy more time for himself and the entire project in terms of securing financing. Meanwhile, inflation in Strip real estate prices is going to cost him an extra 900 grand per acre, due to a contractual adjustment.

The Las Vegas Garden of Love wedding chapel, long the subject of controversy and accusations including bullying its competitors to the point of assault, finally had its license pulled yesterday by the Las Vegas City Council.
Dubbed a 'Garden of shame' by one city attorney, the chapel was declared a public nuisance by council memebers in a unanimous vote. It's not yet known whether the owners will appeal the decision or not.
Meanwhile, if the demise of the Garden of Love has left you in search of a wedding chapel, check out Neon Nuptials, the ultimate Las Vegas wedding guide book, available from our online store.

Earlier this year, the company bought 14 million MGM Mirage shares at a price of $84 a share, plus an additional 14 million shares from public shareholders. This gave the Dubai-owned company a 9.5% stake in MGM and a foothold in the international gaming market without having to build any casinos on home turf, where betting is illegal.

Any chance of a long life for the new CBS Hugh Jackman vehicle is looking unlikely after the show's disastrous ratings debut. According to TV Week, the show "fell 63% from the lead-in 'CSI' to post a 2.4 preliminiary rating ... coming in last place. Moreover, the show lost 31% of its demo rating in its second half hour and was the lowest-rated program among the major broadcast networks for the night."
Apparently, the network's going to wait until after Sunday night's airing in the show's regular time slot before making any decisions about its fate, but the odds don't appear to be in its favor.
In spite of the pair's recent honoring at the World Magic Awards, we understand that Hans Klok and Pamela Anderson's Beauty of Magic show at Planet Hollywood is slated to close December 8. Their presence in town will doubtless be missed, not least by the writers of this feaure, who have many recent column inches for which to thank Ms Anderson and her colorful marital antics.

In an ironic turn, the Sands in Atlantic City will be imploded at 9:30 p.m. today, accompanied by a fireworks send-off by Grucci. After the Las Vegas Sands closed, members of the Rat Pack migrated to the East-coast namesake and could be seen there over a number of years.

If you've been traveling on the Las Vegas Strip today, you may have been surprised to see one hundred Tiki statues lurking in various locations, from by the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign to on stage with Hans Klok. The 15,000-square-foot restaurant and lounge features modern and traditional Asian/Polynesian dining with an outdoor party patio overlooking the famed-Las Vegas Strip and a second-floor ultralounge and is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to midnight.

After receiving a couple of emails regarding how the alleged link for this recently announced travel promotion on the Silverton's site was mysteriously absent, we placed a number of calls with various departments at the property, none of whom had any idea what we were talking about. We've now finally tracked down a representative from the PR company that sent out the release, who was horrified to learn that the link still had not been put up and was going to get on the case right away. Watch this space for future updates.
