Nevermind the BBQ; Caesars Palace is taking an innovative approach to July 4 weekend and converting the Roman Plaza area behind Serendipity 3 into an "ice palace" for two days, featuring snowboarding and skiing on a four-story snow jump.

A Swarovski-crystal-encrusted glove worn by Michael Jackson fetched $192,000 at the Julien's Live auction that took place at Planet Hollywood over the weekend. It was one of 240 lots that brought in close to 2 million dollars, with other high-ticket items including a 1954 x-ray of Marilyn Monroe's chest that went for $45,000 (well above the estimated $800 to $1,200), a lock of Elvis' hair ($20,000), and a dress worn by Cher on a 1975 episode of her TV show ($26,250).

Vegas! The Show opens tonight in the Saxe Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. Tickets start at a pricy $96. According to an article in today's R-J, following approval from the Las Vegas Planning Commission this week the expansion and renovation plans at the Lady Luck are moving forward, with construction due to start as early as the beginning of 2011. Planned upgrades include the addition of a meeting space and pool deck on top of the existing casino building, a new spa and fitness room, room upgrades, new restaurants, and an entertainment venue.

Further to the story we posted in this column earlier today, it's just been reported by the L.A. Times that California welfare recipients withdrew more than $1.8 million in taxpayer cash on casino floors between October 2009 and May 2010. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued an executive order today requiring welfare recipients to sign a pledge that they will use their cash benefits only to "meet the basic subsistence needs" of their families.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger promised to take immediate action when he learned this week that welfare debit cards, provided by the Department of Social Services to help recipients feed and clothe their families, work in automated teller machines at 32 of 58 tribal casinos and 47 of 90 state-licensed poker rooms in California.
"We have instructed our vendors to prohibit these cards from being accepted at ATMs located in casinos and card rooms," a spokesman said Wednesday. Officials also said they were working to determine how much money had been withdrawn from casino ATMs by people using the welfare debit cards.
After an epic and record-breaking three days, American John Isner this morning won the longest tennis match on record by beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the final set at Wimbledon.
Picking up at 59-59 in the fifth set Thursday, the match continued on serve with no break points for over eight hours until Isner hit a backhand passing shot to finish the contest in front of a packed crowd. Isner finished with a total of 112 aces and Muhat 103.
The players just took their seats for Event #43, the $10K H.O.R.S.E. World Championship. As Poker News put it in their WSOP online feed, "We'd normally write a 'who's here' post right about now, but it might be easier to write a 'who's not here' post instead. The end is in sight for the historic racially integrated casino, with demolition work on some parts of the property slated for as early as tomorrow, following permission from the Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission to raze what's left of the fire-damaged structure. After two years in bankruptcy, a judge has approved a reorganization plan for Lake Las Vegas that wipes out old debt and gives the project a second chance. Credit Suisse, the project's biggest creditor, has agreed to accept equity in the resort community.
It's been 11 years since the Par-A-Dice Riverboat Casino last moved, but this morning it released its mooring cables on the Illinois and headed out into open water on a three-hour cruise to comply with new U.S. Coast Guard requirements that require an annual seaworthiness check. The Par-A-Dice used to cruise 10 times a day but stopped in 1999.

Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor is to be honored with a rock & roll memorabilia showcase at the Hard Rock, to be unveiled July 15th. The case will feature masks and uniforms that Taylor has worn on stage, as well as plaques, photographs, and other collectibles. This year's World Series of Poker continues to draw increased participation. Through 33 events, attendance is up 10.2% over 2009. However, prize money is down 1.9%. The situation mirrors the general state of the Las Vegas recovery: more people spending less.

One way or another, it promises to be a memorable night... Cover $30, $10 for locals.
Added to the proliferation of new pool parties this summer is a new raft of concert series, including the Palms' "Campfire" sessions, sponsored by Cruzan rum, that kick off tonight with a performance by Spin Doctors. Julien's, the auction house responsible for numerous celebrity-memorabilia sales, will host one this June 24-27 at Planet Hollywood, featuring items previously belonging to Michael Jackson, including furniture, stage clothes, and handwritten lyrics. Guitars played onstage by Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley are also expected to be up for grabs, along with a Mercedes owned by Anna Nicole Smith, and dozens of personal items from Cher, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's estate.
Details have yet to be released, but a union representative confirmed today that a deal has been made with pilots to end the five-day-old walkout that has grounded all Spirit flights. The union and airline are still finalizing the details of when pilots will return to flying, however.
Seems we haven't seen the last of the recent high winds yet, with an advisory in effect until 9 p.m. tonight for all of southern Nevada, including Lake Mead and the Spring Mountains. Southwest winds of between 20 and 30 mph are forecast, with gusts over 40 mph.

Sir Richard Branson was in town yesterday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Virgin Atlantic flights between London and Las Veags. During the day he was joined by Mayor Oscar Goodman and Dita Von Teese to unveil a plane featuring a flying lady on the outside of the aircraft in the iconic guise of the bulesque star. In the evening he attentended Cirque's Viva Elvis show at Aria, even appearing on stage for a cameo.

While conducting our monthly phone-around to all Las Vegas buffets and brunch venues, we just learned of another Venetian dining casualty, namely the popular brunch at Zeffirino, which was served for the last time on Sunday.
Steve Wynn just announced 261 layoffs at Wynn and Encore to "reduce overstaffing." Apparently, 3,700 part-time employees will be returning to full-time positions as a result of the move.
It seems there's some positive fallout from the record foreclosure and unemployment rates in Nevada -- the Silver State just ranked #5 on the list of Best States for Business in the latest issue of Chief Executive magazine, thanks in part to cheap real estate and abundant labor. Other factors in our favor include the relatively low cost of living and state taxation structure (California came in last, not least because of its high income and sales taxes).

Voting closes today for the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions, where the public has the chance to vote for their Top 20 favorite players from among past WSOP bracelet winners to compete for a $1 million prize pool. We're rooting for Kill Phil author Blair Rodman; French phenom Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier, who contributed commentary throughout to the second editon of Kill Everyone, won his seat at the event last week by triumphing in one of the sponsor-playoff qualifying events against fellow professionals Andy Bloch, Gus Hansen, Sorel Mizzi, Liv Boeree, Gavin Smith, Paul Wasicka, actor Don Cheadle, and Michael Mizrachi, whom he defeated heads-up for the seat.

Rumor, the new "boutique" resort from Siegel Group, is hosting a job fair this Wed., June 16 to immediately fill nearly 50 open positions including cooks, stewards/dishwashers, guest-room attendants, food servers, and security officers. After the surprise announcement last week that Strip headliner Louie Anderson was leaving Excalibur, comes official word that he'll be moving his show to headline at the Bonkerz Comedy Club venue at Palace Station, which will be renamed and rethemed in his honor. The comedian says his love of performing in a comedy club-style venue spurred the move. Anderson will also be bringing his "Standup Boot Camp" to Palace Station this summer.
A strike by Spirit Airlines pilots that's into its third day has left passengers stranded passengers across the U.S., including at McCarran International Airport. All flights for the airline are grounded through Tuesday. The airline says will be offering full refunds, plus a $100 credit towards a future flight for passengers affected by the strike.

We tried a few places since the World Cup began. Very good are all the Brit pubs (both Crown & Anchors, McMullen's, etc.), except, perhaps, when England is playing. The crowds during England games are out the door, so you have to get there several hours ahead to have a chance at a seat. The scene will likely be similar at the Hofbrauhaus for today's Germany/Australia match. Despite promoting parties, we found PTs and Big Dog's docile (though there's a good $2-beer deal at the latter). Best overall might be Lagasse's Stadium at Palazzo. There'll be a hefty minimum (usually $50 per head) if you want one of the prime viewing couches, but you can set up at the bar or just drift around for an excellent viewing experience.
Station and Fiesta casinos are also offering specials during World Cup games. Hot dogs and beer are $1 apiece, and breakfast sandwiches are $2. Get a drawing ticket to win team jerseys with every $20 wager.
Cantor Gaming will run the Tropicana sports book when it reopens this fall. Cantor, which is expanding its presence in Las Vegas, currenty runs the book at M Resort, and has deals for its mobile gaming product at Venetian/Palazzo and Hard Rock.

When we called to inquire what it covered, the policy was so new that no one knew; today, we can confirm that the amenities covered by the fee include Internet access (including WiFi), local/long distant/domestic calls, access to the fitness center, and boarding pass printing.

rm Seafood's Rick Moonen finished second on last night's Season 2 finale of "Top Chef Masters", finishing just a half-point behind chef Marcus Samuelsson. According to Robin Leach's Vegas Deluxe column, the two top chefs will now work alongside each other on June 23 at RM Seafood, with a cooking demo followed by the dinner they served the judges on last night's Bravo show.
We heard a rumor and just received confirmation from an apologetic concierge that as of today, Wynn and Encore have introduced a $20/night resort fee. The person with whom we spoke said that it didn't actually cover any amenities, like Internet service, but was just an additional $20/night fee. Wow. The fee will not be applied retroactively to existing reservations, but will be applied to all bookings as of today.

France officially sanctioned online gambling this week, relaxing a state monopoly on gambling that dates back to the 16th century. 17 licences were granted to 11 operators in time for the start of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Currently horse racing and betting on organised sports events is covered by the new legislation; online poker will be authorized later this month.
The Tropicana will be the next Las Vegas casino to get Cantor Gaming's mobile gaming technology in a new state-of-the-art race and sports book that's expected to open this fall. Cantor Gaming's eDeck, currently available at properties including the Venetian/Palazzo, M Resort, and Hard Rock, enables guests to play a selection of casino games, including games developed exclusively by Cantor Gaming, and enables people to place wagers directly from their seats in the sports book at any time during a sporting event.
Brad Garrett, who was formerly a regular at the Mirage, is opening his own comedy club at the Tropicana this June 28. He'll perform through July 4, with subsequent headliners scheduled for this year including Kevin Nealon, Dom Irrera, Bob Zany, Rondell Sheridan, and Rocky LaPorte. Tickets start at $39.

The El Cortez Hotel & Casino, in conjunction with the Las Vegas Design Center, has launched a competition for local Las Vegas interior designers to have a shot at remodeling several of the property's luxury suites. The "Design A Suite Downtown" competition calls for entries from all interior designers, architects, and teams with at least one member licensed in the State of Nevada. The top four finalists will have the opportunity to make their design come to life by redesigning one suite each. One winner will be selected from the final four and will have the opportunity to remodel the remaining suites, which will be unveiled during the hotel's 70th anniversary celebration next year. Disney is closing five of its seven ESPN Zone locations, including those in Las Vegas and Times Square, on June 16, citing declining visitation and high rent at the brand's high-profile locations making it increasingly difficult to operate the sports-themed restaurants profitably. So, that'll be one less venue for catching the World Cup action, but there are plenty of others -- look out for an upcoming feature at LVASports.com.
Statewide gaming revenues were down almost 6 percent in Nevada in April, although the figure for the Strip was less than 1 percent. The Boulder Strip fared worst, with a 25.5 percent decline in gaming revenues. According to the latest figures from the LVCVA, April visitation was up by just under 1 percent however, making it the eighth straight month to see an increase.

After less than two years on the job, Michael Speller has resigned as president of Foxwoods Resort Casino "to pursue other career opportunities." The casino is currently trying to renegotiate $2 billion in debt stemming from an ill-timed expansion. Speller's only the most recent casualty in the position; his two predecessors lasted less than a year and eighteen months, respectively.

MGM Mirage has confirmed that comedian Louie Anderson will end his Larger Than Life show at Excalibur Aug. 1 after nearly a quarter-century run. We understand his intention is to take the show on the road.
We just learned that very quietly (silently, in fact), the Las Vegas Hilton opened a new movie theater two weeks ago. The Giordano Theater will apparently present film series showcasing four different movies weekly, with seven showtimes throughout the day beginning at 10:45 a.m. Movie tickets are $12 and include unlimited popcorn, and light dining and cocktails are also available. Construction at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Pennsylvania has resumed after an 18-month recession-induced hiatus and a spokesman for the property said that construction of its 3,000-seat concert and conference center could be underway by year's end. No time frame has been announced for resuming work on a mall planned for the casino site.

Before Australian naturalist Steve Irwin was tragically killed by a stingray in 2006, he had been in discussion with various parties about bringing an ambitious crocodile exhibit to the Las Vegas Strip. Las Vegas' second Yard House (the other is in Town Square) opens today at Red Rock Resort. It's located back near the sports book in the area that used to be the Salt Lick Barbecue. This place is amazing, boasting 130 beers on tap. There's also a big food menu.
Long shot Drosselmeyer won yesterday's Belmont Stakes, paying $28.00. Only a third-place finish by First Dude prevented nine different horses finishing in the first three spots at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont, which last happened in 1928.
According to The Guardian newspaper, Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson's father, unveiled plans yesterday to build a complex in memory of his son, which may include a casino. Jackson said he hoped the complex would bring significant jobs to Gary, Indiana, where Michael was born. A feasibility study into the project has yet to be conducted.

After some vacillating, Black Gaming has confirmed that it will demolish part of its Oasis resort in Mesquite. Plans call for the casino and more than half of Oasis' 900 rooms to be destroyed.

Bloomberg reports that gambling revenue in Macau almost doubled in May, rising from approximately 17 billion patacas ($2.12 billion) from 8.8 billion patacas a year earlier. It's been four years since the Chinese casino enclave surpassed Las Vegas as the biggest gambling hub in the world.

Michael "the Grinder" Mizrachi is the winner of the inaugural $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship (formerly H.O.R.S.E.). On his way to a $1,559,046 prize, Mizrachi defeated his brother, Robert, who also made the final table and finished fifth. It was the highest finish by two family members in WSOP history. The runner-up was Vladimir Schemelev from Russia.
