Plans to begin work on an extension of the Las Vegas Monorail by the second quarter of 2017 appear to be off the table. The proposed route between MGM and Mandalay Bay is blocked by a major water pipeline to the Strip and a new construction plan needs to be put in place. A revised timetable was not disclosed.

December 30, 2016 09:27 Evacuations at Rio:

Guests at the Rio were evacuated on consecutive days this week because of two related incidents. It started with a small fire in a service elevator that caused a 400-room evacuation of the Masquerade tower on Wednesday. Sprinklers quickly put out that fire; however, water subsequently seeped onto an electrical conduit, causing smoke to filter into the tower, which necessitated a 900-room evacuation. Guests were relocated to the Ipanema tower and other Caesars properties. The Masquerade tower is expected to be fully restored by New Year's Eve.

The Flamingo celebrated its 70th anniversary this week without fanfare. There was hardly a mention of the milestone in the media and it even slipped by us. The resort opened on Dec. 26, 1946 with 105 rooms at a cost of $6 million. It's easily the oldest casino on the Strip.

Highland Dr. across from the Artisan. Arnold Snyder of Topless Vegas Online. went over to take a look and Mayweather was there overseeing work inside. Floyd gave Arnold a quick tour and told him the club could open in January.

It's possible to get from east to west, but only by taking circuitous routes, so plan accordingly.

CG Technologies may be on its way out at the Cosmopolitan. After operating the sports book there since 2010, CGT has reportedly received a letter of termination from the casino, which cites the company’s several recent breaches of gaming regulations. CGT has filed in district court to prevent the termination of its lease, which currently extends through 2025. CGT's other sports book and mobile-gaming operations in Las Vegas are not involved.

According to an article in the LV Sun, over the last five years more than $35 million has been collected by casinos in uncashed slot tickets. The casinos are allowed to keep 25% of that, with 75% going to the state's general fund.

The Crown & Anchor in the downtown arts district has closed. Unlike Crown & Anchors East and West, the downtown location never offered the traffic-driving lunch comp for a $20 video poker buy-in and didn't have the same vibe. The owners say the closing is temporary, so maybe they'll fire again with the original formula in place.

A court has ruled that poker notable Phil Ivey must return $10.1 million he won with a female playing partner at the Borgata in Atlantic City. The court ruled in October that Ivey violated state law by employing a technique known as edge sorting in baccarat, but didn't at the time stipulate that he would be required to return the winnings. Ivey will appeal the decision.

Quickly following yesterday's announcement by Crown Resorts that it was pulling out of the Alon deal, the project's developers indicated that it would seek another partner. While no names of potential suiters were mentioned, Alon CEO Andrew Pascal said that the project is "shovel ready" if another partner materializes.

Reno beats Vegas this year, not just in the annual football grudge match between UNLV and UNR (UNR won 45-10), but for tallest Christmas tree bragging rights. While Las Vegas' tallest is 60 feet at The Park, the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks has a towering 105-footer. While the Nugget's tree was thought to be the tallest in the U.S. when it went up, Citadel Outlets in Los Angeles put up a tree that's 115 feet tall. The Nugget graciously conceded being topped, issuing a statement that read, "We went out on a limb and you stumped us, Citadel. You must have a top-notch branch manager!"

That mangled Shakespearean reference notwithstanding, the plug has finally, mercifully, been pulled on Alon, the Crown Resorts project announced in 2014 for the former New Frontier site opposite the Wynn. Crown released a statement today saying, "Following an extensive review of funding alternatives for the Alon project over the last two years, Crown Resorts has determined that it will not proceed with the project at this time."

Years ago when MGM Grand first experimented with eliminating drink comps for video poker players at its bars, San Remo, the casino across Tropicana that preceded Hooters, put up in big letters on its marquee: WE COMP VIDEO POKER PLAYERS AT THE BAR. A week or so later, MGM was comping again. Now, in the face of paid-parking initiatives up and down the Strip, Hooters is taking a page out of the San Remo book in promoting its free parking. And even taking it a step further. The following is from a recent Hooters press release. Japan's parliament has passed a bill legalizing casinos there. The process for approving and building resorts will be complicated, so operating casinos aren't expected to materialize before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but it's expected that the prospects will attract billions in investment dollars. Early interest has been shown by, surprise, Sands and Wynn.

MGM Grand and Hakkasan Group are teaming up to create the city's latest "gaming lounge" in an attempt to bridge the gap between traditional styles of gambling and the video-game playing Millennials. The new "Level Up" lounge is set to open December 29 in the space formerly occupied by the Rainforest Café. The 12,000-square-foot area will merge traditional gambling with pool, foosball, and other arcade games. It follows similar. There will also be a bar area with craft beers and specialty cocktails.

    The Santa Train is a ten-minute festive holiday train ride on a real live passenger-car train that rolls through the desert of historic Boulder City, Nevada. The route follows a 3.5-mile section of track through the Eldorado Valley that was laid in 1931 when Hoover Dam was under construction.

  • Springs Preserve Holiday Express:
    Dec. 17-23; $8 members, $10 non-members, free ages 2 and under
    Take a train ride to Santa’s Village and experience holiday crafts, stories, cookie decorating, a nutcracker display, and a meet and greet with Santa. John Katsilometes of the LV Review-Journal reports that the policy will go into effect in "early 2017" and there will be no exemption for locals, with fees starting at $7 for 1-4 hours. This move was almost inevitable, as the Cosmopolitan was the parking play of choice for those wanting to go to CityCenter and avoid the parking fees.
