September 30, 2017 20:53 MGM Cotai Delayed for Fourth Time:

MGM Resorts International has announced that it will delay the opening of its $3.1 billion MGM Cotai resort for a fourth time (really, check the records). The new timeframe moves from the second half of this year to Jan. 29. Cut 'em some slack on this one -- the reason is the effects of Typhoon Hato, considered the worst to hit island in 20 years.

September 30, 2017 12:50 Pot Lounges Debated:

The ongoing conundrum concerning the consumption of legally purchased marijuana in Nevada has led to a debate over the legalization of “pot lounges.” Several lawmakers are pushing for the establishment of these legal consumption areas, but it’s a long way from becoming a reality and smoking or ingesting cannabis in public continues to be against the law.

In a related matter, approval has been given for the first 24-hour marijuana dispensary near the Strip. Located near the Stratosphere, Oasis Cannabis is expected to be the first to operate around the clock, with others soon to follow. Up to now, the dispensaries (except those in North Las Vegas) had to close between 3 and 6 a.m.

September 29, 2017 15:52 Oyster Deal Down:

It took a while to get paid, but after opting for the $66 million lump-sum payment, it works out to a tidy $2.2 million per year for three decades. September 24, 2017 13:43 Football Slice:

Last week we reported that Palace Station had moved its football-food specials into Little Tony's restaurant, but we neglected to mention the best deal there. Pizza by the slice is just $1.50 for cheese and $2 for pepperoni, and this is a giant slice of NY-style pie. We'd rate this the best deal on a slice in town and it's available during games on Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Last week we marveled at the elimination rate of players during the first week of Station Casinos’ Last Man Standing contests after posted results showed only 860 players remaining in the Pro contest and 586 in College. Someone hit a wrong button, because after the second week there were 1,017 in the Pro and 895 in College, numbers that make a lot more sense, coming close to the expected 50% drop-off each week.

September 19, 2017 15:22 Boxing Draw Bad for Books:

The draw in last weekend's big Golovkin/Alvarez boxing match was a negative for the sports books, many of which say they broke even or had a small loss. Worse, the Pro LMS had 81.2% of its contestants eliminated, reducing from 4,595 to 860. Things weren’t much better in the Westgate SuperContest, where the top six consensus picks went 0-6 and the field had an aggregate record below 40%.

Our new message boards are almost ready to go live. Of course, they'll be all about Las Vegas and gambling, but do you really want the "all" part of that? Let us know how you feel by voting in the new Reader Poll that's live now.

You have to bet off a sheet with the -105 numbers (not directly off the board). We'll update when we have full details, but you should be able to bet into the 105 lines now.

September 14, 2017 11:54 Delayed Poll Analysis Up:

After a dominating three-year run as the top-ranked team in the nation, Gorman lost successive games to teams from California and Florida. But despite falling out of the championship picture, Gorman was featured in USA Today again this week. The story was about the hospitality shown to the Florida team that couldn’t get home because of Hurricane Irma. No details regarding replacements have been released, though there's reportedly a sign outside of N9NE that reads "You'll like where this is going/We're taking things to the next level."

September 06, 2017 18:04 Orleans Buffet Update:

This is an update to Monday’s Question of the Day about the grand reopening of the Orleans’ buffet, scheduled for “mid-September.” The new name will be the Medley Buffet (same as the buffet at Boyd’s Aliante). The Orleans, being Boyd’s largest and most popular Las Vegas property, has been the “focal point” of a major food-and-beverage upgrade of around two dozen restaurants across the country, and the Medley will be the sixth new or upgraded restaurant, along with Alder & Birch Steakhouse, Ondori Asian Kitchen, Prime Rib Loft, Copper Whisk Café and Bailiwick. A Boyd spokesperson says that the Medley is “about creating a new experience, with a new concept and a larger menu (though still at an attractive price point versus the Strip). Going forward, we may potentially leverage this brand at our other Vegas buffets, giving us a valley-wide buffet brand (rather than the individual brands you currently see at our properties), though it’s still early to go into details.”

Once the sale is official, the situation will be evaluated with respect to Nevada gaming rules to determine the GN's NBA-betting policy.

September 05, 2017 17:18 Utah Fights for Gambling?:

Call it a full-court press. The push is on in support of New Jersey in its attempt to have the Supreme Court overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act ("PASPA") that mostly outlaws sports betting outside of Nevada. The American Gaming Association and, so far, 17 states have filed briefs in support of New Jersey's position. One of those states is Utah, which emphasizes how important the underlying states-rights argument is, given that Utah has no legal gambling, and likely isn't seeking any, inside its borders.

September 05, 2017 14:55 Tilman Fertitta Buys Rockets:

Golden Nugget and Landry's owner Tilman Fertitta is buying the NBA's Houston Rockets for a record $2.2 billion. Speculation has already begun about moving the franchise to Las Vegas to join the city's pro football and hockey teams, but it seems unlikely given that Fertitta, cousin of Station Casinos' Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, has deep Texas ties.

September 05, 2017 10:24 Hard Rock Guitar Retired:

Say goodbye to another of Las Vegas’ famous icons. The 75-foot-tall neon guitar that sat on the corner of Paradise and Harmon at the Hard Rock is being removed. Not to be confused with the guitar jutting out of the roof of the casino that was focal in the movie Con Air, the sign was part of the Hard Rock Café, which closed last year. It will be moved to the Neon Museum.

September 04, 2017 16:41 Baby Name Line:

Just hours after the announcement that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their third child, the British bookmakers posted a line on the name. William and Kate are favored to have a girl, with Alice the favorite at 7-1. It's followed by Arther and Victoria, both at 10-1. The long shot is Donald at 50-1. Somehow it seems those odds should be longer.

September 03, 2017 10:53 Dubious Distinction for UNLV:

The University of Nevada Las Vegas' 43-40 loss to Howard University in yesterday's season opener is being reported as the biggest upset in college-football history. Not that UNLV is a powerhouse, but they went off on the betting line as a 45-point favorite, which is said to be the largest pointspread ever overcome. It was a tough week all around for Nevada football, as Bishop Gorman High School's 55-game winning streak was snapped in a 35-21 loss to California's Mater Dei. Tougher yet, UNLV coach Tony Sanchez and Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez are brothers.

September 01, 2017 08:43 Raiders Seats:

Prices haven’t been announced yet for Las Vegas Raiders tickets, but some information about the cost of the right to buy them has. Prospective season-ticket buyers must first purchase a PSL, which stands for “personal seat license,” for each seat they want to buy. It’s a one-time fee that doesn’t include the cost of the tickets themselves, parking, or anything else. The average cost of a PSL for Raiders seats will be $4,000, with lesser seats likely going for $500-$1,000 and premiums for as much as $50,000 per. At least you have till 2020, the first year the Raiders will play here, to think about it.
