Analysis

Thanks to everyone who wrote in with their own suggestions and variations on the options we offered. Here are some of the ones we thought were worth sharing, either because they sounded plausible or they amused us:

  • "You don't have menudo on the list." [Ed: You're right. That spicy Mexican tripe soup is indeed widely regarded as a hangover cure. Makes sense that lining your own abused stomach with someone else's might be a good move, but tripe the morning after... Just not sure if we could.]
  • "Bottle of Gatorade and 2 aspirin before I go to bed and some vitamin B complex." [Ed: A lot of people also advocate taking aspirin before you start drinking.]
  • "When I was a young 'lounge lizard' I tried all sorts of pre-emptive strikes on the dreaded hangover...until I found that when I got home and ate a couple of good cheese danishes (protein/carbs/sugar) and washed 'em down with a really large O.J. ( orange juice)...it never failed!"
  • "Eat two 'turtles' chocalate/caramel clusters before going to bed. Nada aches in the morning." [Ed: What? Are you quite sure about that?!]
  • "I had a great physical science teacher in college and he told the class that we would remember this one thing LONG after we had forgotten everything else we learned in his class: To prevent a hangover eat a very greasy meal before you start drinking (chili’s the best) and when you get home take two aspirin with a full glass of water before going to sleep. Works every time!" [Ed: Someone find that teacher and buy him a drink. And a bowl of chili...and couple of aspirin!]
  • "I was told this by an alcoholic...and it works! A large vanilla milkshake -- it coats your stomach."
  • "Alka Seltzer makes the greatest product in the world. It's called Wake Up Call (was previously called Morning Relief). It's nothing but aspirin and caffeine and it kicks a hangover to the curb. Available at Wal-mart, Walgreeens, and most major pharmacies."
  • "A Dr Pepper and a spicy burrito (and maybe a painkiller or two)."
  • "Since I have now come to the point in my life (over 40) that hangovers can occur (never had this problem when I was younger), I have found a product that works wonders! Sold at most drug stores next to the antacids and heart burn relief products is a red and yellow box labeled 'Chasers.' These are simply a charcoal filter capsule and the cost is only a few dollars for a box of 30 capsules. Take 2 capsules before you start drinking and one additional capsule every 3 or 4 drinks, and not only will it keep you from having the dreaded 'spins' when you lay down, but you wake up feeling 'normal' and ready to attack a new day in Vegas! I have Chasers tucked into every suitcase interior pocket.....they really are amazing!"
  • "Soda and Bitters will do the trick. Just close your eyes and swallow it quick!"
  • "Sleep then jump in a pool.
  • "Hair of the dog always does it for me."
  • "I drink Emergen-C Vitamin Energy Booster both before (if I can), when I get back to my room at night , and in the morning....works like a champ for me."
  • "A can of Campbell's mushroom soup with tons of crackers."
  • "Canada Dry ginger ale. Cured every hangover I ever had!"
  • "A bowl of chili on the left side...a bowl of favorite ice-cream on the right side..alternate spoonfuls of chili and ice cream." [Ed: Nah, you're just messing with us. Aren't you?!]
And now here are some LVA staff recommendations:

  • "Egg whites + tablespoon sugar + 1/2 cup of milk. Cleans ya right out..." (Michael)
  • "Drink a full 8 oz of water. Water is used to metabolize alcohol so if you don't have enough in reserve. water will be drawn from tissue, exacerbating hangover symptoms. And start with good bourbon to begin with." (Dale)
  • "The one thing I really miss about living in the South.....Goody's Headache Powders." (Lori)
  • "One thing I've learned working here is that the best cure for a hangover is "hangover soup." A big bowl of Pho does wonders. If that's not an option, a big breakfast and a spicy Bloody Mary. Other than that, water, Advil, water, sleep, and more water. Then a promise to the Gods That Be that I'll NEVER do that again. (Becki)
  • "Big greasy breakfast and sleep to keep it down! : ) (Tanya)
  • "I've got the only sure-fire 100% fool-proof cure for a hangover: abstinence. No alcohol, no alcohol toxicity. (Deke)
  • "The most effective (and popular amongst HP staffers past and present) is a steamy hot bowl of Pho, with loads of rooster sauce in it. By the time you've finished the bowl, all remaining toxins will have been sweated out and you'll feel right as rain. A properly spicy Bloody Mary always does the trick, but is not suggested for work-day hangovers. The Marys at Wynn are the best -- fresh and spicy." (Bethany)
  • "What is a hangover? Ha! Hair of the dog and 24 hours." (Gary)
