Analysis

Wow! We thought this one was a throw off, but it attracted one of the biggest responses we've ever gotten on a poll about food. Youse guys like your dogs. Slots A Fun, Nathan's, and the great cart dogs from the Coast (and South Point) took the honors. These choices make sense. The Slots A Dog has been around for years and is the last survivor of the Monster Dogs from the '80s and '90s. Nathan's are ... everywhere (and they're good, too). And the sports book hot dogs served from the carts are, as the sports book devotees who scarf them would say, "the nuts." The "Other" category was big in this one, with Costco’s leading the way in the write-ins. OK OK, we’ve heard this before and we’re gonna try ’em. Thanks for voting; here are some of your comments and "Other" suggestions:

  • "The Vienna beef dogs at Bills Gambling Hall."
  • "One of the bast hot dogs I've had was from the snack bar at Hoover Dam. It was plump, juicy and flavorful."
  • "Chicago dogs are the best (being from Chicago, I'm biased). I voted for Chicago dogs on Rancho, but now that my mom doesn't live in Vegas anymore I don't go northwest as often. I'd like to know if there are good Chicago style hotdogs nearer the Strip or near downtown?"
  • "We love the Vienna Beef--the big fat ones...usually at found at Buffalo Bills, Orleans, South Point, in a rolling cart. I live north of Seattle and these hot dogs are no where to be found."
  • "None of the hot dog eateries compare to a Portillo's hot dog. Unfortunately this Midwest chain is not yet in Las Vegas. The closest to you is in California. When you have a chance to give them a try you will know Portillo's is the best."
  • "Best overall hot dog play is Costco - $1.50 for a great hot dog with all the trimmings (including sauerkraut if you ask) and a refillable soda."
  • "Believe it or not, a pizza place! Mark Rich’s NY Pizza & Pasta has a Noo Yawk style hot dog that’s even better than what you get from NY’s ubiquitous hot dog carts. The red onion sauce is amazing!"
  • "I voted for Mermaids. Perhaps not the best flavour, best certainly the best combination of price, taste and degenerate atmosphere."
  • "I used to love the 99 cent monstrosity at Slots-A-Fun, but it's since doubled in price & mysteriously shrunk. Admittedly, some of the appeal was the 'kitsch' & the 'value'. The new fave, sadly, has little to do with Las Vegas - it's the 1/4 pound dog at the Costco food court. Always fresh, loaded with some onions, kraut & deli mustard ... not to mention a heckuva deal at $1.50 with a refillable drink."
  • "Lady Luck had the best ones ever - I haven’t had a hot dog since then! (No wonder I’ve lost weight.)."
  • "Best hot dog: Golden Gate, without a doubt. Steamed not grilled."
  • "Sportsbook at the Orleans. Vienna beef, steamed in beer, and only a buck! (Maybe Suncoast and Gold Coast have the same thing?) Every time I pass by the beauty salon at Sam's Town, I think of the Slots A Fun dog. The sign in the salon window reads 'Hair, Nails, and Skin.'"
  • "At the Cal snack club, a delicious hotdog for a special package deal which includes a drink and pickle."
  • "Piccadilly Circus on Fremont Street, at the southeast end."
  • "22-inch Monster Dog at Longhorn Casino's Chuck Wagon."
  • "I haven't tried most of the picks in the poll, but I can tell you that I have never had a better dog than at Costco, and you can't beat the price, either. Jim Sinegal (CEO) has said that the price of the hotdog and drink will never go up as long as he is still alive."
  • "You left out Hot Dog Heaven in Henderson which was Celine Dion's favorite hot dog shack in the Las Vegas Valley!"
