Analysis
Thanks for the great response to this one. For anyone who's unfamiliar with our Top 10 Values, it's a list that we've been compiling since the first-ever issue of Las Vegas Advisor, and which gets updated once a month. Many of the items on the list are almost permanent fixtures; others are far more transient and might only make the list for a month, either because a deal is temporary, or because it was deemed good enough to spotlight for a month, but something else interesting and equally deserving caught our attention the next time around.
There are certain protocols that govern the list, one being that if a price goes up, that item will be bumped from the Top 10 out of principle, even if it's still a good deal at the new price. Agood case in point is the shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate, that's more on than off, but has been dropped several times over the years for price hikes.
Aside from certain rules like this, pretty much anything goes, so you might find $1 beers juxtaposed with a high-end appetizer play; the point is, does the offer represent great value for money? If so, absolute price isn't the issue, and a deal's a deal. Hopefully that's clarified things for anyone who was unsure what this poll was about. Now to some of your feedback:
- "Love this poll. A trip to Vegas is not complete without a trip to Ellis Island for a Steak and beer (or 3). I can't walk by Casino Royale without cruising through to pick up a $1 beer to carry while walking on Strip. "
- "Love the shrimp cocktail at Golden Gate, but too bad they don’t let you use your players card to pay for it anymore."
- "I’m visiting Vegas in June. For the first time we’re going to try a coupon run and the Trop’s deal and Terribles’ coupon are the best. And the lunch special gives me a good excuse to scope out the Cosmopolitan. Given the economic limitations, we have to be a bit more creative to have fun in Vegas. Thank you for doing the homework for us. LVA rocks!" [Ed: Thanks!]
- "Have tried the Ellis Island Steak Dinner several times over the past years andm sorry to say, 3 of the last 5 dinners have been disappointing. Steak was tough :( Mashed potatoes and beans were very good however :)"
- "As a diamond player, I do not pay for rooms and have enough comps to cover a lot of other things." [Ed: Understood. But if you happen to find yourself on the Strip and in need of a cold one, or just fancy a change of scene from your usual (comped) haunts, it's worth checking the list; something might just catch your bargain-conscious eye.]
