Analysis

This was an interesting poll, which definitely brought in a landslide winner, but we know in part that's because so many people didn't even know there was a choice (we think we're probably the only website that offers that!

We know how so many people hate change, and when we first introduced our website in its current incarnation, there was an outcry! We like the dark background and agree with the fourth response below. The previous "weak-urine" yellow some of you may recall was not favored by the current staff, and the "purple" version of the site prior to that ... well, the current writer can't bring herself to comment on that LOL.

know you can't please all the people all of the time, but we did endeavor to strike a compromise and created a black-on-white version, with a button in the left-hand menu to activate the change, in an effort to assuage those readers who didn't think they could stomach the dark background. We must confess, however, that in-house pretty much everyone uses the dark version and we tend to forget to check how the other one looks. The yellow text that pops against charcoal gray is, we agree, HORRIBLE on the white version, and we will look into seeing if we can change that without messing up how the dark background looks, which hopefully will keep everyone happy. In the meantime, here's some of your feedback:

  • You should have had an additional selection: I didn't know there was the option to change the colors. I wasn’t aware that the background was switchable until I saw the poll, so I looked for it. I like the white background a lot better, but someone needs to make sure that the graphics show up equally well on both background. The column of “LVA HOTEL DEALS” (on the left side of the page) is virtually unreadable with the white background.

  • Now that I found the link to change it, I see what it does and hate the black on white.

  • I use the dark background and don't really care for it -- the letters seem to vibrate when small. Now that I know - and if I can figure it out - I'll try the other version!

  • I never knew this was an option until this poll. But now that I found the option, I switched to black text on a white background, just like books, newspapers, etc. Thanks! [Ed: You're welcome!]

  • I just like the dark background better... it feels more 'Vegas' ! LOL. [Ed: We agree :-) ]

  • Re: today's poll about preferred color - I like black-on-white personally and also because if I read the QOD at work and someone walks by, black-on-white is less suspicious then white-on-black. As long as the don't notice the ads for Topless Vegas . . . . [Ed: Ha!]

  • Thank you for this question. The problem is: The answer I chose didn't come anywhere near expressing my feelings. Since the beginning whenever the black screen comes up it is like a jolt . . . I HATE IT! For a long time I thought about writing you how I felt, but considered it too petty since all I had to do was touch the color screen icon but oh, how I wanted to let you know. In the future if you can fix it so I stay with the white screen, great. If not I think, now that is have had my say, I can tolerate it with a minimum of furor. I won't miss QOD at any rate. It is one of my can't miss emails. Thanks again, I am so happy!" [Ed: We aim to please. We may not always succeed, but we do try!]

  • I'd much prefer a white background with black print so I can easily copy reviews of articles, etc., but I don't know how to change it. [Ed: See above, but it should print black on white, regardless of which version you're viewing. Let us know if you're having problems with that.]

  • I like 'em both - I use the black-background version when I'm on my laptop, and I use the white version on my iPad. I like the snow during the holidays... nice touch! [Ed: Thanks! We won't even get into how polarizing that was, but we thought it was fun. Someone in-house asked if we could make the snow pink and blue on the white site, and someone else asked if we could just make it snow around the edges. Sadly, no to the latter, and HELL NO to the former!]
