Analysis

As we put the finishing touches on the 2014 MRB of special offers for LVA members (click to see the 2013 list), this timely suggestion from a reader yielded some interesting food for thought and ammo, which we intend to share with our vendors. Here are some of the comments you sent in, and don't forget there's currently a limited-time opportunity to check out a 3-month Trial Membership to LVA for just $12, so if you're coming to Vegas in the next week or two (or, even better, if you live here!), then here's a great chance to find out what you've been missing, or to get a second hit at using your fave coupons again!

  • "If the reason that Red Rock put the two-for-one coupon for their steakhouse [T-Bones] was to get us out to their casino, it worked. We were staying at a Strip casino and would definitely have NOT made the ride without that great incentive."

  • "All your 2-for-1 buffet coupons are worth joining for, especially when many can be used 7 days a week, like Stations."

  • ""We love to redeem the 2-for-1 coupon for Le Burger Brasserie at Paris. We typically stay at Aria and it's not easy to drag us away from the gaming floor, but we always make the trip to Paris, because we find their burger to be a notch above the rest. "

  • "$50 for $40 at the Sahara. It wasn't as profitable as the $25 match plays at Fiesta or the Castaways etc, but you had an advantage and could sit and play awhile. Nice not to hit and run."

  • "Blackjack pays double for an hour. I think you previously had this at Golden Gate and at Sunset Station."

  • " I can’t pick just one of the match play coupons for BJ or any other game that may be available, as they all are great coupons and I would probably not visit those casinos if it were not for the coupon. I prefer the Strip, but will take a day or two and do a coupon trip every year when I come to Vegas to use those deals."

  • "My favorite is the $30 discount at The Flame steakhouse at El Cortez. I use it almost every year. Great value and great way to introduce people to the best pure casino-hotel in Las Vegas!"

  • "My fave was the 2-for-1 night at Main Street Station. It introduced me to the concept of using coupons and introduced me to the idea of getting discounts for rooms from the casino itself - a terrific intro to a reasonably priced Vegas vacation. This also led me to all the Frugal Gambler books - thanks, Jean Scott! Currently, my favorites are the buffet coupons. P.S. I'd love to see a deal for airport transportation (Bell Trans, etc) [Ed: Probably not possible, since the Taxicab Authority has everything tied up in non-compete red tape, but we'll see if there's anything we can do...]]

  • "Twofer buffets at Boyd properties downtown."

  • "I voted for the Ellis Island food and drink specials, but I really miss the coupon for the Rio buffet. One of my favorites. Why no coupon this year?" [Ed: Why, indeed? It's a question we've been asking of CET but we don't yet know where they're head is at...]

  • "It was the 50% off up to $50 at the Palms, but ONLY for the spa. Now the spa's closed, I no longer use this coupon." [Ed: Turns out you're far from alone in this. While we can't yet confirm what Palms will do, we have some other irons in the spa fire, so stay tuned!]

  • "Ellis Island 'all-you-can-drink' deal has always been my favorite. I believe it used to be for 2 hours back in the day? [Ed: Yup, but people were falling off their stools!] Nothing like watching a Browns game at the bar and drinking for free, while my dawg-pound friends are back home at the stadium paying $8.75 per beer. It's cheaper to go to Vegas, use LVA coupons and end up a winner!" [Ed: Exactly!]

  • "I have two particularly fond memories: 1) I used my $10 free play at El Cortez to play video poker and hit a $150 jackpot, which paid for most of a new computer when I got home! 2) About 5 years ago, my brother and I wanted to see Don Rickels at the Orleans, but the ticket prices were too high. I said, 'Maybe there's some sort of coupon in my LVA book?' Was doubtful, since Rickles wasn't a resident performer there, but I was VERY pleasantly surprised when I found a 2-for-1 coupon good for ANY show at the Orleans!"

  • "2-for-1 for one BBQ dinner at Ellis Island. Thank you for the great job you guys do on the coupons." ]

  • "A couple of years ago, my girlfriend and I went to Vegas and decided to try out as many coupons as we could. What we most enjoyed were the show dealss: n eight days, we saw seven show! Also ate quite a few two-for-one meals and went everywhere to cash as many of the match plays as we could.

"I know she thought I was nuts at the time; but she still talks about it today, maybe six years later, as one of the great vacations she's ever had. Well done, LVA! Oh, and we hit on a match play for slots at Planet Hollywood and walked with $180 net after investing $20 and getting the freebies. Plus, I hit on six of eight other match plays for another $60 score.

"It’s a shame I can’t talk my hotshot buddies into doing coupon runs when we're there, but they’d rather camp at the crap table and let ‘em roll. Thanks for everything you do each year! I've enjoyed Amazing Jonathan, Vinnie Favorito, the Man of a Thousand Voices, a magician extravaganza, Charo…the list goes on and on, with very few misses. You’re appreciated!" [Ed: Aw, you're making Anthony blush -- he's the one to thank for bagging the vast majority of the deals. Just keep subscribing and making it worth their while for our partners to keep giving us good deals, and EVERYONE should be happy and enjoying some extra cash in their pocket, right? We'll be announcing the 2014 MRB contents in approx. 10 days, so keep an eye open, and thanks again, everyone!.
