Q:
The MGM-AEG Las Vegas Arena is now visible on the skyline and most insiders feel it's highly likely that Las Vegas will have its own NHL team within the next five years. The question is, if/when this happens, would you support hockey in the desert?

Analysis

An interesting result to this survey, with the yes/no vote almost split down the middle. Here's some of the explanatory feedback you mailed in:

  • "The question is what major league games should be played there? How has the minor league hockey franchise performed at Boyd Stadium (or elsewhere?) What about baseball and football? Soccer? I personally haven't the time in my typical 5 night-stay in Vegas to squeeze in more than even a show or two. My state (Michigan) has plenty of major league games, and I don't attend more than a few each year (if any at all). We don't even care about boxing matches. This stadium is going to be a great success or a terrible failure. In other cities, stadiums are also used for concert events. Vegas doesn't really need that with plenty of venues, including MGM Grand's facilities."

  • "In general we would probably not take in a hockey game when in Vegas, but if our home team, St.Louis Blues, were playing, I would go."

  • "I'm a Canadian. Of course I'll go to the hockey game. I'll prioritize the game above gambling, inexpensive food and free or cheap drinks. Incidentally, you won't find cheap booze or food at an NHL game. ($7.50 for domestic beer, $4.50 for a bottle of water, at a game in Vancouver, BC.)"

  • "If they were playing the Chicago Blackhawks I would go. Otherwise no."

  • "Depends what your definition of support is. As a local, I'd go to a game or two a year if the ticket prices were reasonable."

  • " never go to Vegas when it's hockey season, so it's a moot point."

  • "You mean another ticket for the scalpers to price beyond reason? Locals will not support a hockey team if the prices are out of control. I'm still sickened by the way the tickets for the big fight were not distributed to the public. Can this town be normal in some fashion?"

  • "I’m from out of town and come to Las Vegas 2-3 times a year. About the only time I would consider going to a hockey game in Vegas would be if the Vegas team was playing my home town team but I wouldn’t make my travel planes specifically for that reason. My team would have to be playing purely by coincidence during the time I’m that visiting. I’ve done that before for a NBA game but that would be about it."

  • "I would attend at least one hockey game per trip if transportation was reasonable. The hotels could promote hockey game attendance by out of towners by establishing shuttle transportation for guests."

  • "I am a tourist and a hockey fan. (Go Wings!). I MIGHT attend a game if the Wings were there. I go to Vegas for the reason Vegas used to exist: Gambling. As a hockey fan, I don't want to see an expansion of teams but that is another issue all together."

  • "The first year things will be great because of the 'Honeymoon' period the team will have. The second year should be OK, too. But if the team is not winning by Year 3 attendance will decline. I live in the SoCal area and am a diehard Kings fan. I would LOVE to spend a weekend in Vegas seeing my Kings play on a Saturday (and I know Ducks fans would also come out for a weekend game - not as much for a Weekday game). Having said that a Vegas NHL team has a ZERO PERCENT chance of success if the NHL stands firm on its gambling stance and bans Nevada books from "lining" games. Allowing Nevada books to 'line' games will keep interest high even when the team's record is not great. Having said all that I'm still not sure this is a great long-term idea but time will tell..."

  • "Ice hockey in 104 deg. weather? I don't think so."

  • "I don't care for hockey no matter where it is played and would not waste time on a Vegas visit to see a hockey game, even if the tickets were free."

  • "I live in Dallas and I thought no one would support hockey here, buy The Dallas Stars have one of the most loyal fan bases of the local teams and the team plays to a mostly full arena even during shaky seasons for the team. I'd love to see hockey in Vegas."
