Q:
Last week, we apparently broke the story that the Mirage was to drastically cut back the performance schedule of its iconic erupting-volcano attraction (see Today's News 7/10). So, naturally, we want to know how YOU feel about this news? Pick whichever answer most closely fits your sentiments.

I think what they've done is fair enough. It can’t be cheap to operate and there are still nightly performances. Put it this way, I’d rather they make reasonable savings here than hurt us directly by bumping up the resort fee or tightening their casino games.

Yet another nickel-and-dime move and I’m sure the schedule-cutting is merely a prelude to the inevitable corporate take back of yet another of the "free" perks that Las Vegas used to offer as a reward to us loyal visitors who pay the bills. Another imminent nail in the coffin of the LV I once loved.

While I have fond memories of evenings spent watching, or driving past, the volcano, I’m inclined to think it’s time for something new. I’m just worried about the recent trends and what might take its place... Another shopping mall? Pharmacy? Outdoor-event venue? Supersized fast food emporium? Please no! I can’t bear how the Strip is becoming so bland and unexciting and "un-Vegas"!

The volcano’s had its day, just like the pirate show at TI. Sure, it was a cool novelty back when it debuted and Steve Wynn’s vision was instrumental in getting us to where we are today; but things have changed and it’s time to gracefully retire these kitsch vestiges of the '80s and '90s. It’s a new Las Vegas and there’s a whole different audience of spenders now who simply aren’t impressed by the old gimmicks. Innovate or die!

Who cares if they cut the hours? Ditch the whole monstrosity entirely, I say! It always was a lame attraction and I have no clue why they wasted all that money 'upgrading' it a few years back -- should have replaced it then when they had the chance. Finally, someone at the Mirage has come to their senses!

Analysis

While the world awaits official word on the possible fate of the Mirage, here are some of your thoughts regarding the recent schedule cutbacks for the volcano show (and is that the odd hint of sarcasm we're detecting in some of your feedback?!):

  • "The explosion is nice, but after seeing it several times, I won't go out of my way to see it again. However, I love to walk by the flowing water around it, and I will do that every chance I get. Guess I just love water, like Caesar's Fountains and especially Bellagio's lake and fountain show."

  • "Another de-theming going on? I'm surprised that they haven't sent the zoo animals and dolphins packing. It's practically de-themed anyway, like TI. I will just have to continue to go to Vegas for the great gambling, clubs, shows, shopping, attractions, food and (almost) free booze. Sigh."

  • "I think it is fine to cut back on the nightly shows but would hate to see it disappear. So many things have changed on the strip in the last ten years, and not for the better. Too many shopping malls, too many nightclubs, too many fancy-chef-named places to eat. The casinos are forgetting what Las Vegas is supposed to be, a place to gamble. Not all of us are interested in getting falling down drunk or dancing all night at a club."

  • "I think they've temporally cut back on the shows till they have time to erect a giant curtain around the volcano. When it's finished they'll charge anyone that wants to see it $5 (or included in the Resort Fee if you're a guest at the hotel). This should improve MGM's bottom line $50 or $60 bucks a month. Better buy that stock now before it goes up."

  • "I have fond memories of evenings spent watching, or driving past (the original was much better). I understand the need for change but saving some history is a must. I take your words with a twist--I can’t bear how the Strip is becoming SO BLAND AND UNEXCITING AND "UN-VEGAS!!!!! I worry about the recent trends and what might take its place... Another shopping mall? Pharmacy? Outdoor-event venue? Supersized fast food emporium? Please NO!"

  • "We are past the age where planing and rushing to get to there at the right time is worth it. The first re-model ruined it anyway, with that crappy sound system."

  • "I started going to Vegas over ten years ago because Atlantic City did not impress me. The fun free things to do is what kept me going back. Like with the loss of the Paris fountain, Rio show, pirates and more, the casino itself may not see a direct impact, but I think Vegas will and does get hurt as a whole. Vegas as a destination in and of itself needs to outshine the cheaper local casino attractions. I live in Maryland. I now have great casinos with dining. I need a reason to fly across the country to visit Vegas, but the reasons are drying up. I love to gamble, but want free distractions too."

  • "I do not see a problem with not starting the performances until it is darker, so folks can get the full benefit of the show. For those who believe it's a 'has been' from another era, obviously you have not noticed the crowds that gather before each performance. It's still an attraction visitors like to watch and take pictures of. I'm a regular visitor myself and when I'm in that neck of the woods and the performance is starting, I always stop to watch it. For the record, I miss the Treasure Island ship fight, too."

  • "I like the volcano and think it draws visitors to the hotel and vicinity. I'm a local and we have constant visitors who enjoy being taken to see the volcano (over and over) and they still ooh and ahhhh over it cuz' no where else can you see such a fantastic erupting volcano. Once in the area we frequent the Mirage, otherwise we might not stop there as there are so many other hotels/casinos/attractions to visit in Las Vegas competing for attention and often limited time."

  • "It was a tough call on which choice but in general, it is time to move on. These types of attractions were once a prime way to draw traffic, but they have turned into just a curiosity. Move on, find something new to bring in the customers."

  • "I would have marked the: 'I think what they've done is fair enough. It can’t be cheap to operate and there are still nightly performances. Put it this way, I’d rather they make reasonable savings here than hurt us directly by bumping up the resort fee or tightening their casino games, for example' bullet, except we all know they will STILL bump up ALL fees for things that were once included in the cost of the room, and increase the slot hold anyway. Casinos pay no attention to OUR opinions, so really what's the use in even commenting?!"

  • "In my opinion, the original volcano was so much better. This 'new-and-improved' volcano is horrible. It's just a lot of noise. I saw it once, and I'll never see it again. They can tear it down for all I care. It's just not worth watching anymore."
