Q:
In honor of 4/20, we pose a simple question: How do you feel about the prospect of recreational marijuana being legalized in Las Vegas?

I’m all for it. Should have been legalized everywhere a long time ago. How can cigarettes and alcohol be legal yet a naturally occurring plant is not? And is this not "Sin City," where everyone can let their hair down a little?

I have no problem with legalizing cannabis for medicinal use, but I still am very reticent about general recreational availability of any currently illegal drug. Not least, it’ll be just one more added cause of DUIs in this town, I suspect.

I absolutely oppose the legalization of pot, period, and certainly don’t want to see ’coffee shops’ popping up on the Strip. I might go so far as to take my custom elsewhere if it happens.

I’m on the fence. In theory it’s no more dangerous than things that are already legal, but do we need any additional legal ways to get intoxicated? I just don’t know enough to make a choice.

Analysis

Thanks to all who voted - an interesting result. Here's a sampling of your additional email feedback, which we hope covers the full spectrum of your thoughts on the subject (which are even more interesting):

  • "I have enough trouble concentrating on cards with beer. If I were to partake, I would have to stick with slots."

  • "I don't smoke it personally but I don't mind it when people do. Stoners are fun to watch and in general behave better than drunks. The potheads aren't hurting anybody, leave them be."

  • "Recreational use, no. Just what we need...another substance that in decades to come will prove significantly damaging to brains and lungs. Interestingly, the medical world already has toes in the water in regard to medical marijuana and even LSD. That's a long wait and see for sure, for LSD at least. Not to mention a prohibitive cost for the 'patient' if/when a pharmaceutical company gets it to market. But I digress from the question. Sorry."

  • "Please NO on this. We have a real problem with drugs and drunk drivers as it is. Just watch the evening news! We don't need to add to the problem."

  • "It blows my mind (pun intended) how the powers that be do not realize marijuana is so much more safe than alcohol."

  • "Would you rather deal with someone high on pot...or someone drunk on vodka?"

  • "While I know there are valid medical uses for marijuana, in California the vast majority of people with cannabis cards for medical marijuana obtain them for recreational use. At one point before Los Angeles cracked down on unregistered stores, there were more cannabis stores than Starbucks. (Probably not quite that much medical need....) I believe it should be legalized for medical and recreational use AND be regulated by the state like alcohol and tobacco. It's a great waste of resources enforcing laws against it."

  • "Legalize pot? Judging by the number of motor and pedestrian accidents in Vegas, there are plenty of people acting under the influence of something already. Weed is everywhere. Like tobacco, it stinks up clothes. I had some big bully try to pick a major fight with me on The Deuce Bus about 10 years ago and he was "drunk as a skunk"! With drugs stores in Vegas more numerous than dandelions, think of the Pandora's Box it would open!" [Ed: Do you mean "drunk as a skunk" or "high on 'skunk'"?!]

  • "Yes, I think it should be legal. No, I don't think I will be imbibing. There is plenty to do in Vegas without drinking or getting stoned."

  • "Need to stop all smoking in casinos: cigarettes, cigars, e smokes, etc. Don't add medical smokes."

  • "Medical marijuana is OK with me. I've never used it. But will we have to smell the stuff in a casino if it gets legalized?"

  • "I have been marijuana smoker, on and off, for 40 years. I am a 61-year-old woman, former business owner, and medical marijuana-card holder in Arizona. If you don't want to use it, fine, but let the rest of us do what we want. We will be voting on recreational use very soon. Hope it passes."

  • "Tax it. Tax it heavy. Tax it hard."

  • "I don't care! I don't use it, never have, probably never will."

  • "I live in Colorado. Organized crime is now involved growing illegally and exporting to other states. Crime levels have increased. Unless it is legal everywhere it's just pushing the problem to other states."

  • "I live in Colorado where it has been legal for recreational use for sometime now. Has not caused many problems. Drug dealers are not making money off it; law-abiding citizens are. The state received so much extra tax revenue that we had to a ballot question on last election on what to do with the money. Marijuana brought in $120,000,000 in tax revenue; beer, wine, and liquor tax brought in only $42,000,000"

  • "It will not affect me at all. I can't imagine an issue I care less about."
