Poll : 10 August - 23 August 2016

Q:
With the Plaza debuting a new rooftop pool this summer, just as Monte Carlo prepares to close theirs as part of the property-wide rebranding, we wonder how important an on-site pool is to you when choosing where to stay in Las Vegas? And why?

Lying by/swimming in/belly-flopping drunkenly into a pool is NOT part of my Vegas vacation plan, hence a pool’s not an amenity I look for -- and is possibly one that I avoid (especially if a resort fee’s involved!)

I DO want my hotel to have a pool and I want it to be on site - I'm definitely NOT okay with a facility at a 'sister' property. I'm here to relax and am not inclined to traipse around, even if it's to the place next door (and definitely not if it's across/down the street!)

I absolutely require pool access, but it needs to be (or the pool complex must includes) an adult-only pool that I can relax by -- maybe even swim in a little (!), not just a daylife orgy option, or a screaming kid-oriented ’play’ pool.

If there’s a decent pool at my hotel that isn’t packed like sardines and doesn’t charge a king’s ransom for a meager daybed, then it’s an amenity I appreciate; but these days even going to the pool can cost an arm and a leg in Vegas if you require a couple of drinks and something to sit on, so my pool days are looking very numbered...

I wish more Vegas pools were open at night. I don’t want to face the crowds/heat during the day, but a refreshing swim late at night, before bed, is awesome! The only 24/7 pool I’m aware of is at Hooters (although I’m happy to see the proliferation of "night swim" parties now at XS, Golden Nugget, M Resort etc.)

If there was a resort-casino with an INDOOR pool, that would be my pick. With outdoor pools, either the weather’s too hot, or the water’s too cold, so for now not a factor in my choice of hotel.

Other - go on, tell us what we missed!

I enjoy going to pools, whether to relax or to party, but so many now admit non-hotel guests that it’s no biggie to me if my hotel has its own pool or not -- plus I like variety!

I used to enjoy going to the pool, but since I read that independent report a few years back about all the nasties (and I mean NASTIES!) found in the water (not to mention the ’Vdara Death Ray’!), I haven’t set foot in a Vegas pool and likely never will again.

I’m into the daylife scene and I want to stay somewhere with a Rehab/Wet Republic-type pool on property - that way I can get straight up to my room to freshen up at the end of the day.

I look for a hotel that has a ’toptional’ pool and prefer to stay there.

Analysis

Thanks for all the votes and for the interesting feedback, a sample of which follows:

  • "You missed: I never go to the pool so I don't care if it has one or not." [Ed: What, you mean that top-polling answer that 414 other people chose? We'll make a mental note to change that to 415 ;-) ]

  • "What?!? You mean there are pools around Las Vegas? I haven't noticed one on a casino floor yet..." [Ed: But had you been playing at the Hard Rock on a Rehab weekend, we're pretty sure you would have noticed all the drunken bikini-clad females wandering past your table - oh, unless you're a serious AP whose concentration never wavers from his ace tracking, of course haha!]

  • "How about a nice, friendly pool area where I can just relax with plenty of chairs for everyone who wants one and no attitude? Kids are fine... sometimes we bring our own, sometimes not." [Ed: That sounds like a more-than-reasonable aspiration. Pool people: Does it? If so, where?! It's the chairs and the attitude part that we're feeling may prove problematic.]

  • "If i am coming in the winter from Chicago, I make sure I stay at a hotel that has its pool open all year round, even if open only during the day. The Golden Nugget is a great place to stay, just for that reason." [Ed: Interesting, as the winter in Vegas can be pretty chilly, too. But most hotels with pools have at least one that's year round and heated. Note that this list has NOT been updated in a while, but you can use it as a good thumbnail guide and then call any property that appeals to you to verify if our info is still on point.]

  • "Pools are just another way resorts now nickel and dime patrons. I remember the old days when pools were open, no cost, and you would tip for drink service or a towel. Old Vegas, like Old Hollywood, was much better. Oh well."

  • "I really hate that you can't go to the pool at night. A late night swim is the best. I also miss the old school pools that were deeper than 3'. I actually like to swim. The nanny state waist deep pools are just terrible." [Ed: Couldn't agree more, on both points! Tip: Hooters pool is open 24/7 and is also open to non-hotel guests - but we recommend verifying to see if that still applies at 2 am - and Bally's is the only hotel pool in town with a deep end.]

  • "We go to Vegas roughly three times a year: Spring Break; summer; and Thanksgiving. Spring Break, we stay somewhere with a party-style pool; in summer we stay at a place with a more relaxed pool space; and at Thanksgiving, we don't care!"

  • "We don't care if our hotel has a pool or not! And what on earth is Rehab/Wet Republic? I guess we don't get out enough! We want nice rooms at a good price, or comped, plus a great price on our rental car, then we are good to go!"

  • "I like to have a pool where we stay because it's a great way to take a break. But I mean a regular pool, not one I where I have to pay for entry. I like to have peace and quiet, not a party atmosphere. Staying off-Strip usually gives me that option, so I'm good. But I do agree with one of your other options: I wish the pools were open in the evening." [Right? Isn't that the BEST time to go swimming, when the air and the water are a great temperature, no screaming hordes, and you get some relaxing, stress-relieving exercise just before bedtime? But they don't want to pay a lifeguard to supervise you, me, and that previous person a few bullet-points up who feels the same way, sadly.]

  • "I chose on-site pool because that's the most important issue to me. Others also fit, like adults-only; late-night/24 hr,; and indoor (I'd love an indoor pool for our winter stays), but being able to go downstairs (or up if it's not ground level) from my room in my swimsuit straight to the pool is the main preference.",br>
  • "We have never used a pool and probably never will. In 20+ years of going to many different hotels, I could not tell you if any of them had a pool or not."

  • "I don't care if a Las Vegas resort has a pool or not. I don't use them. Chlorinated water bothers my sinuses and I would not feel comfortable for my entire stay due to sinus irritation." [Ed: There are a couple of salt-water pools at MGM Grand's Wet Republic complex, just FYI, and also one at TAO Beach at the Venetian (although we've read the latter is shaded and tends to get a little chilly).}

  • "I live in Florida. If I want to go swimming, I can do it here."

  • "Do not give a S**T about pools."

  • "I like pools and I am a very good swimmer but I am so fat now that I have no business being at a pool. You are welcome good looking people." [Ed: While your candor is refreshing, might not the pool be also? And swimming's great exercise. But sounds like you're fat and happy lol. If not, check out that nighttime option at Hooters where most likely you and the writer above would be the only two there, plus it's dark at night ;-) As an aside, you may find that the types you class as 'pool people' aren't all exactly supermodels either... Jus' sayin' ;-) ]

  • "I don't use the pool at all, however, my wife does like to hang out by the pool during the day while I'm playing video poker. So a pool is a must for us when we travel together. When I go to Vegas alone, doesn't matter. We used to stay at the Golden Nugget back before the pool was remodeled, and before I gambled, and we liked to hang out there all day. Even got a cabana for Connie once and it was great, and included a wonderful cheese and fruit platter and juices and water. Once they remodeled the pool, the loungers were too close together for our tastes, so we stopped staying downtown. Now either Green Valley Ranch or Red Rock is our favorite casino/pool combo."
