Poll : 13 September - 26 September 2017

Q:

We're about to release the completely revamped, upgraded, and backdated forums. Not only will they occupy their own niche (that's no longer attached to our e-commerce space), but all the original categories are returning, including the most popular threads from the message boards on the old website. So, in response to the requests for it, the new message board will be extremely similar to what it was. The main change is that, unlike the old boards that were open mainly to LVA members, the new forums will be open to all (in order to post, you just have to be a registered Gold member, which is free).

Which brings up the subject of this poll. The old forums had a section called Free for All, a place for participants in the LVA community to go off-topic and discuss whatever they wanted to. As the name suggests, the Free for All got pretty wild at times, with rants and flames and all kinds of offbeat threads and posts. What we'd like to know is if we should offer a similar space called Kitchen Sink. Your choices are yes, no, and don't care. You can only pick one and we'd love to read the reasons for your choices in the comment boxes.

No, I'd like to see the LVA forums be limited 100% to Las Vegas and gambling.
45% (394)
Doesn't matter to me; I don't have to go there, but it'd be better if participants who did had a place to go.
40% (353)
Yes, I'd participate in an off-topic Kitchen Sink message board no matter how wild it got.
15% (135)

Analysis

At first glance, the results of this poll look pretty clear: 45% against a Kitchen Sink in the new forums and 15% in favor.

However, when you factor in the 40% who might or might not go to the Kitchen Sink, but seem to be in favor of having it for those who would, it leans the result the other way.

And judging by the comments, it seems pretty evenly split.

We appreciate all the comments, especially about the rules, moderators, and the possible impact the name itself might have on the kind of participation it receives.

We'll take everything into consideration and make our decision accordingly. Thank you for participating!

    Forum Rules
A good portion of the old forum "Free for All" posts would have been in violation one or more of the current Forum Rules.

    Keep lva successful
If it makes lva more popular/successful, keep it. Personally I don't go there because lva is an escape from that sort of thing.

    Leave it Alone!
100% Las Vegas! The main reason why is simple and obvious: if you open it to anything, it will be bombarded by the fanatics who have political agendas. If that happens, the only readers of the forum will be those on both extremes of the political spectrum who are willing to spend an unlimited amount of time to push their cause and trash the other side. There are plenty--in fact, too many--venues for those individuals already. Free for all is fine--as long as it's about the main attraction that draws us to Las Vegas.

    Free for all?
    It got pretty wild,at times.
I prefer Las Vegas related topics, anyway.
I just don't have to go there.
There was a challenge to make ONLY gambling topics on the forum. I lasted 5 whole months.

    Kitchen Sink
I probably wont venture there but I can see where it would appeal to others. I say, why not? It may prevent those who want to post (and read) from having to venture to another site to for this content.

    Kitchen Sink
If I remember correctly, the Kitchen Sink message board in the old web site didn't garner the loose cannon types of posts that the FFA was known for. Words have power, and "Free For All" almost invites a rant from someone spoiling for a fight. IMO "Kitchen Sink" would provide the place for going off-topic and perhaps not attract as much flaming.

    the old forum
I enjoyed the old forum. I did not participate in the off topics, but it was entertaining. A little bit of Jerry Springer.

    Kitchen Sink
I personally did not like the way the Free for all ended up being nothing but political rants and arguments everyday. If you are going to have a Kitchen Sink topics please make sure it stays there.

    Agenda
The Kitchen Sink forum appeared to attract people with an agenda, mostly political, who contributed little or nothing to the other forums. There were entirely too many offensive or inflammatory comments. The most successful Las Vegas in terms of number of members and daily posts is the Vegas Message Board prohibit just those types of posts. It has an active, though gentle monitor, which is something the former board did not have. I have read a number of comments on other boards indicating people left this board because of those type of comments. Bottom line is if you are going allow anyone to post, there should be some guidelines on what is unacceptable and have an active monitor.
