Poll : 31 January - 13 February 2018

Q:

With so many visitors annoyed by -- and some refusing to pay -- resort fees tacked on to hotel room rates in Las Vegas, we're curious about how many among you have eschewed the hotels entirely in favor of staying at private rentals, such as Airbnb, VRBO, HomeAway, and the like.

You can select as many answers as apply to you, and since Internet-based home-sharing is a fairly new phenomenon, we'd love to hear about your experiences if you've used them and which you like, your reasons for not using them, and whatever else you might have to say about them.

Analysis

Obviously, with just under 500 votes, this poll didn't apply to or resonate with too many respondents, which is its own indication of the state of home-sharing in Las Vegas.

Other indications: 9% of voters never even heard of home-stays; a large plurality (40%) haven't tried it and never intend to; two respondents who've tried home-stays had bad experiences; and last but not least, only one one voter has actually stayed in a Vegas home-share.

Factoring in the comments, along with Las Vegas' enviable hotel occupancy statistics, Las Vegas does seem to be a tough town for home-shares -- competing with comped rooms, room service, elevators (!), and the one-stop environments for gambling, dining, and entertainment.

On the other hand, a significant number of people have availed themselves of homestays, with 8% using the monster Airbnb (the largest accommodations company in the world -- without owning a single hotel room) and 7% at the old-timer VRBO (one of the original online vacation-rental companies, now owned by Expedia). Just a few have stayed with HomeAway (bought by VRBO early on and acquired by Expedia when it scooped up both companies), HomeStay, and Flipkey.

We believe that as home-sharing continues to make inroads into the mainstream accommodations market, and the sharing economy (such as ride-sharing, crowd-funding, and local delivery) gains more acceptance and traction, we'll see more of an interest in Airbnb, VRBO, et al. in Las Vegas. For now, this poll gives us a comparison baseline for the next time we survey readers about it, perhaps in a year or so.

As always, thanks to everyone who voted and commented.

    Home-Shares
The reason I said I wouldn't consider a home-share is because I'm Diamond at CET and never pay resort fees. If I most likely would look at alternatives.

I have stayed with VRBO and AirBnB in the states as well as abroad. Never had a problem and found home sharing to be a good alternative to expensive hotels especially in Europe. In Vegas I own a timeshare (15 yrs.)at the Polo Towers (on the strip) that I use twice a year and have had buyers remorse and regretted buying it. In general, timeshare ownership is a lousy investment at best. At times, I wanted to just dump it (even though I bought it on Ebay for next to nothing). Until now. I know what my annual expense is (maintenance fee does increase from time to time but not much), no parking fees, no resort fees, no surprises as far as accommodations goes(one bedroom with full kitchen and a balcony overlooking the strip for 7 nites twice a year). I don't think you can get that kind of accommodation at a strip hotel for $600 a week. So yes I am annoyed with hotel add on fees in general especially in Vegas which I have visited several times a year for over 40 years. Ah the good ole days

    No to Any Home-Sharing
I can't even imagine staying in the home of someone I don't know if they are present. Besides being such an awkward situation, who knows what danger lurks in that environment. They might not even own the home.

Similarly, I would not stay in the home of someone who I didn't know, even if the owner was not present. Too many unknowns and too many complications could arise.

I own and live in an apartment in a residential condo in Florida. I don't like having transients in my building and I will not be a transient in another persons condo. Transients expect owners of other apartments to also be their host, which I am not, and treat them as welcome guests, which they are not.

Concerning resort fees: Years ago, even after vehemently complaining, I got stuck having to pay a hidden resort fee in advance, in full, or not be allowed to check-in. Since then, I only stay in hotels that have no resort fee, or are up front with it, and the combined price is acceptable to me.

    Rip offs
Only stay where they give us free room which is off the strip. Will not ever stay on the strip until the extas(parking, resort fees) etc.

    Elevator to Casino Missing
No plans to stay in a home-share. There's no elevator to the casino or room service.

I have used VRBO and AirBnB, but not in Vegas. I almost always stay downtown and not charged for parking or resort fees.

    No way
It’s enough of a leap of faith to stay in a hotel where the staff are supposed to be bonded and/or have background checks.

No way am I going to stay in someone’s house, particularly while carrying a gambling bankroll!

    Not an Option
We don't rent a car so getting around would be a problem. Besides, we value our privacy too much and staying in someone else's home just doesn't appeal to us.

We still get comped rooms at CET and paying the resort fee is ideal, but it is what it is. It still is cheaper then paying to stay elsewhere.

Done it before, will do it again
I've stayed in Airbnb houses and apartments in several countries and recently rented a house in Las Vegas and it was great. The total cost for the 3 bedroom house was about half what we would have spent on 3 hotel rooms on a busy weekend. Our host apparently was a Cirque du Soleil performer but we never met her. It's a good option for those looking for a place that has more space, a kitchen, or is 420 friendly.

I often visit Las Vegas with my family and we will try to rent others' timeshare units on eBay. It's not always easy to find exactly what you want but it can be a great deal.

Las Vegas corporate greed has removed us from considering returning to LV. OK for those new to LV as they know no better but we have ceased LV after more than 50 years of patronage. Since Las Vegas has become owned by a few corporations, fee's have now surpassed those charged by the a Air Lines

    Homes Don't Have Resort Fees
Resort and parking fees are killing my love of the Strip--FAST. Summerlin and Henderson are looking good these days.

I like big corporations because if you have any problems it is handled by accounting or customer service, private homes are cheap individuals and there is difficulty for recourse plus its just creepy staying at a persons home..give me 2 for 1 cabana suites at the El Cortez from the LVA..now thats a deal (I just did it for week of superbowl and saved over $135so airbnb and vrbo can go app somebody else plus I hate anything to do with apps that suck money out of the economy for virtually doing nothing so some neck beard in San Francisco can make 500K a year and steal money from property owners

    Vegas vs other cities
I would never use an airbnb, etc, in Las Vegas because wehn I go there, I'm there to gamble, and I don't want to lose time in the commute or hassle factor, etc. IF I was there for a full week and planned other activities, THEN it may make sense. I used Airbnb in Chicago during one of their big confereces - rooms were going for $800/ night, myself and another guy got an airBNB for 4 days for about 2 grand - or saved the company about $5000. So, if you had to pay for a room, AND rates were high, THEN Airbnb makes sense.
The one gotcha that I didn't think about: I'm allergic to dogs. OUr airbnb guy had a dog. He'd done a really good job making his place look nice, but I could tell what room the dog stayed in.
At any rate, theres nothign wrong with home shares, its just that Vegas is the once place that for me its totally unnecessary.
