As might be predicted, the 1995 movie Casino, based on the book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas, is the runaway favorite. With a star-studded cast (Robert DeNiro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, Don Rickles, James Woods, Kevin Pollack, and Frank Vincent as our guy, the late Frank Cullotta), the movie dramatizes the most volatile time period and set a relationships in recent Las Vegas history. Sharon Stone was nominated for an Academy Award, playing the fictionalized character of Geri Rosenthal, who merits an entire chapter in our recent book Shameless -- Women of the Underworld. We agree that it's the best overall Las Vegas movie ever made and the number of votes it garnered, with nary a close second, is evidence enough.
After that, it's a pretty close race for second place, though Ocean's Eleven is slightly in the lead over Vegas Vacation and The Hangover. The latter two are spoofy, while the former is another flick with a stellar cast (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy García, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, Carl Reiner, and more) and a huge box office ($450 million, fifth-highest-grossing film of 2001).
Next up, the original 1960 version of Ocean's 11 is a fine look back at the way things were in the late '50s. Then Rain Man has a great Vegas scene with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, Viva Las Vegas is the classic Elvis-in-Vegas film with Ann-Margret, and Leaving Las Vegas, though almost suicide-bleak, it sure captures the zeitgeist of the place.
Ultimately, all the films in this poll provide at least one good look at Sin City and we appreciate your help in compiling it and selecting the best.
