Analysis

As might be predicted, the 1995 movie Casino, based on the book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas, is the runaway favorite. With a star-studded cast (Robert DeNiro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, Don Rickles, James Woods, Kevin Pollack, and Frank Vincent as our guy, the late Frank Cullotta), the movie dramatizes the most volatile time period and set a relationships in recent Las Vegas history. Sharon Stone was nominated for an Academy Award, playing the fictionalized character of Geri Rosenthal, who merits an entire chapter in our recent book Shameless -- Women of the Underworld. We agree that it's the best overall Las Vegas movie ever made and the number of votes it garnered, with nary a close second, is evidence enough.

After that, it's a pretty close race for second place, though Ocean's Eleven is slightly in the lead over Vegas Vacation and The Hangover. The latter two are spoofy, while the former is another flick with a stellar cast (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy García, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, Carl Reiner, and more) and a huge box office ($450 million, fifth-highest-grossing film of 2001).

Next up, the original 1960 version of Ocean's 11 is a fine look back at the way things were in the late '50s. Then Rain Man has a great Vegas scene with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, Viva Las Vegas is the classic Elvis-in-Vegas film with Ann-Margret, and Leaving Las Vegas, though almost suicide-bleak, it sure captures the zeitgeist of the place.

Ultimately, all the films in this poll provide at least one good look at Sin City and we appreciate your help in compiling it and selecting the best.

Not necessarily a favorite, kind of a downer IMHO. But with Redford, Demi, and Woody, pretty good.

    polls vs info
I use this site for information. So do others, why would we want to rate movies?

  • Toni Armstrong Jr. Jun-28-2024
    Ocean’s 8!
I’d add Ocean’s 8, starring Sandra Bullock and that unbelievable all-star female cast.

  • asaidi Jun-28-2024
    Another poll would be good
You should have another poll for the best SCENE in Las Vegas in a movie. There are some great scenes in not so great movies.

  • PaulaNH Jun-28-2024

Lighten up. This is the third poll this year, and there was ONE last year. These polls are fun and harmless.

    Snap out of it
Tom Sweeny sounds like one of those guys who if you gave him a twenty dollar bill he would complain that it was wrinkled.

  • Eileen Jun-28-2024
    Another one
Not on the list - Fools Rush In with Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry.

  • Samuel Shurgott Jun-28-2024
    Burt Wonderstone
    The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

    Casino Royal
I know, I know, it wasn't a Vegas movie but it was one of the best casino movies. That Texas-hold-em game was a classic.

    3000 Milies
I was sorry to not see 3000 Miles From Graceland. There's a chaotic shoot-out in the Riviera casino. That was fun!

About 3000 votes. I’d say it was a pretty popular QoD. And look at the comments. There’s a ton of info provided here but sometimes the info is uninteresting if you don’t play that particular game. I think this shows good management to keep the LVA alive. Personally I was happy that Las Vegas Story got 14 votes. Pretty old stuff. I think the opening scene where the couple gets off the train with downtown in the background is great. Small stuff. And most was filmed on location. Thanks LVA.

    Casino Movies
If the question were just the best casino movie I would nominate "Reindeer Games" (2000); if you like casino movies it is a fun ride! Great cast--Affleck, Theron, Sinise, Kutcher, Farina... and a surprise ending!

  • Jon Miller Jul-10-2024
Plz do future poll and expand to all casino/gambling genre. Mollys Game. Rounders. Etc
Plz do future poll and expand to all casino/gambling genre. I enjoyed this poll and picked up the Reindeer Games suggestion. Probably some other gems we could share with the team.

    OCEAN'S 8 ????
Toni Armstrong Jr. - You have to see why Ocean's 8 was not mentioned... it does not every set foot in Las Vegas! it is almost totally in New York City!
