Poll : 09 May - 22 May 2018

Q:

We haven't done a dining poll in a while and we're due for one on hamburgers, which we like to run every three years (the last one was in 2015 and the one before that in 2012). Many of the choices in the 2012 poll are no longer around, while a number of new burger places have shown up since 2015.

We listed 52 choices in our poll preview last week and there are now 71, so a big thank you to everyone who suggested places for burgers that we didn't include.

We'll use the results to plan LVA dining reviews around the most vote-getters, especially if we're surprised by some and haven't tried others.

Though you can choose as many burger places as you like, we ask that limit yourselves to the top three.

Thanks for voting and comments are always welcome.

Analysis

People are crazy for In-N-Out burgers. It's not hard to understand, since it's found only in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Texas. So when visitors from the 45 states arrive in In-N-Out Burger territory, that's where they go.

Similarly, Fatburger, number four, is also a chain with locations limited to the far west: California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and Washington).

Five Guys is located around the country and that placed number three. So three of the top four "best burger in Las Vegas" are fast food.

What are we to make of this? The obvious: Many Las Vegas visitors gravitate toward the cheap and easy burgers that they can't get where they live.

As for Vegas-specific burger places, we agree with the top choices: Le Burger Brasserie, Gordon Ramsay Burgr, Burger Bar, and Hosteins.

We were a little suprised that Fukuburger (which has been named the best burger in Nevada) was so far down the list, but it is a little obscure, and that only one vegetarian voted in the poll.

Bottom line: A burger's a burger. There's not much even dedicated burger restaurants can do to stand out. And there are so many burger places in Las Vegas that the range of voting in this poll is pretty stretched out from top to bottom. But one thing is clear: People are crazy for In-N-Out.

As As Rare as a Free Condo?
Are there no Burger King or Wendy's in the Vegas area(s)? Not on the list. Burgers are always a last minute choice in Vegas for us. However, for those naysayers who think the only reason we go to Vegas is to gamble. Think again! How about a hot dog and bratwurst list? We usually get our "dog fix" at one of the "Midnight Deli's" in the casinos. Nathan's are too "small and wimpy", however. Pink's is amazing!

    Best Burger in Vegas
Are you kidding me? We always make a point to stop and have a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" when we hit Vegas.

    Cheeseburger in Paradise
@ocliffgirl62 I was wondering where that was in LV. I checked their website, none in Nevada.

    DOWNTOWN Chicago Brewing Company
Not sure why the pollmasters decided to flag Chicago Brewing Co as (Summerlin) instead of leaving it general or saying (Four Queens). Anyway, my vote is for the downtown Chicago Brewing burger.

Best burger I ever had was in Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill at Caesars. But that's not on the list.

Toni -- Thanks for the reminder about the second location. We've added it.

    No vote
I didn't vote because the only one of these that I've tried (except the chains) is In-N-Out. I know, that's a chain, too, but we don't have them back East. Their double double is a "must have" for me every trip. Yum! 😋

    Fast & Convenient
McDonald's was one of my top 3 only because it is conveniently located in middle of the strip and on fremont and they are fast and cheap when you need something to soak up the beer at all hours of the day!

    Bellagio Cafe going bye bye
We thought the hamburger at Bellagio Cafe was as good or better than anywhere. Tasted like it was grilled outside. But since the Cafe is closing in August, I didn't bother to nominate it. Supposedly a replacement will re-open (many months later) in two sections: a small deli area and a large name-brand restaurant (I forget the name some employees told us). Employees have to re-apply if they want a position, and no guarantee of getting one. No doubt many will seek jobs elsewhere. The Cafe was always our home away from home, staff greeted us like family, so we are sad to learn this.

    Sit down vs. take out
For a quick bite, In-n-Out. For a sit down Gordon Ramsay BurGR - get the Parmesan fries but if there are two of you split the order

Eureka! has some of the best burgers that I've ever had.

    A couple of other omissions
It wasn't quite top three, but I didn't see Original Tommy's (two that I can think of in Vegas - one on Boulder, across from Eastside Cannery, and the other on Rose next to St. Rose Hospital.

And for those lamenting the lack of fast food, there are a number of Checkers (aka Rally's) and Wienerschnitzel locations in Vegas, although to be fair, it's not "just the burger" that makes these worth going to.

    Poll results
I have never been in the HO when there was not a line at Gordon Ramsey Burger (except when it wasn't open) and yet it only got 4%. Guess the lines are mainly not members of LVA?

This in via email from Jackie
As for food polls, I really miss the Foot Long Hot Dog and Strawberry Shortcake special that used to exist on the strip.
Ahh the good old days of food specials on the strip seem to be long gone and tough to find specials as good as they used to be like
Shrimp Cocktail (.99 cent) At least 6 jumbo shrimp with cocktail sauce.
Rib Eye or T Bone Steak and Egg (less than $3) They were thin cuts but damn good.
I know, long ago but no more, just getting too old to hope for the good to continue.

I like In and Out Burger, the best of the fast food chains but the best I ever had was in Fort Worth, Texas.
The burger was served with fresh grilled seasoned onions, provolone cheese, fresh ground beef, homemade buns, vine ripe tomato slice, pickle slice (not chips), lettuce, and mayo (mustard had to be chosen).
There are plenty of good burgers to be had outside of fast food chains but people are creatures of habit and not of adventure. Going to a non chain eatery almost mandates eating anything o

  • Deke Castleman May-26-2018
    Jackie ... cont'd
offered on the menu other than what could be had at a fast food chain.

Speaking of fast food places, people don't realize the high calorie content of the food served. It's why people who eat a lot of fast food get fat. In fact, a lot of Starbucks coffee offerings contain as many calories as a meal. And no eatery ever lists or advertises the calorie count of their food except Wendy's (at least they used to if not now).

Surprised that the Habit didn't make the poll. The location on Flamingo, just east of the strip, is always crowded--and in some national ratings is listed as the best burger. Also, previously the best burger (for you long time Vegas people) was definitely at the Jolly Trolley (located at the strip and Sahara where the "World's Largest Gift Shop" is now); my local friends always took me there--1/2 lb. of beef on a big bun for 99 cents! Too bad that it is long gone! By the way, Mike, there was a "gourmet" Burger King at the Rio!

  • Jared May-26-2018
    Best Western?
Actually today's comments made me remember the burger special at was what a Best Western(?) at the corner of Flamingo and Paradise across from Silver Sevens, now. It's presently an empty lot but for a long time their burger special was in the Top Ten and was very good for the price. Maybe not my very favorite but just another Vegas bargain brought down in the name of progress.
