Poll : 10 October - 23 October 2018

Q:

Our recent poll on your favorite LasVegasAdvisor.com pages prompted us to reconsider a survey we ran several years ago on criteria for choosing hotel rooms when you book a visit to Las Vegas. We’d like to know what information about the hotel itself and its rooms and amenities is most important to you when choosing where you stay? Pick as many options as apply and comments always eagerly anticipated.

A:
4177 Total Votes
Value for money: I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest, but for the best value for the money that fits my other key criteria.
12% (496)
Is there a mandatory nightly resort fee?
9% (367)
Free parking: There are already so many fees and this is a deal-breaker for me, since I always drive or rent a car.
8% (344)
Location is key: I insist on staying downtown, or need to know how far I am from the Strip, or my proximity to the Convention Center, etc.
8% (320)
If the hotel has a casino, does it have playable games and good promotions?
6% (259)
Lowest price: This is my overriding concern. I’m just looking for the cheapest place to lay my head, which takes priority over location or amenities.
6% (237)
Does the hotel have good room deals with valuable extras that offset the resort and parking fees?
5% (227)
Are the rooms quiet (not near the elevator, ice machine, or a nightclub)?
5% (202)
Does the room have a mini-fridge or can I request one for free?
5% (194)
What are the in-room/on-property amenities like (coffee maker, safe, fitness center, nice pool, concierge, etc.)?
4% (185)
Does the hotel have a casino or not? (I may be looking for a non-gaming property to stay at.)
4% (179)
Are there plentiful on-property dining and entertainment options? I don't like to venture too far afield but don't want to get bored after a couple of nights.
4% (158)
Smoker-friendly or no? I need to know, either because I or my partner smokes or because I definitely don’t want to be in a smoky room/hotel.
3% (126)
Is it safe to walk to and from the parking garage?
3% (119)
Is guaranteed good wifi service available throughout and ports to charge my device(s) etc.?
3% (110)
Are there charges for early check-in and late check-out?
2% (101)
Can I request a Strip-view room?
2% (80)
Is there good transportation, be it a hotel shuttle, local bus service, Monorail station, etc., so I’m not stranded or dependent on taxis?
2% (80)
Can I guarantee my chosen room type? I’ve been let down too many times before when I've made a specific request.
2% (77)
Not applicable; I always stay at the same hotel.
2% (68)
Does the hotel have high TripAdvisor and Yelp ratings?
2% (65)
Is the hotel close enough to the Strip that I don’t have to pay for parking, but I can walk there?
1% (48)
Is the hotel pet-friendly or not? (I may want to bring my dog, or else I may want to be sure that the guest before me did NOT bring theirs!)
1% (40)
Other (let us know about your preferences and needs in the comment boxes).
1% (39)
Is it a family-friendly hotel or not? (I want to know one way or the other.)
1% (32)
Are there balcony rooms?
1% (24)

Analysis

This was one of our more popular polls of late, garnering more than 4,000 votes. Obviously, LVA readers feel strongly about where they stay and why.

There were a lot of choices and every one received votes, but not surprisingly, given who we and who are followers are, the number-one criterion is value. Most of us aren't skinflint Scrooges, and that includes the most frugal among us, but most of us like a good deal, especially in the Greed Capital of the Known Universe.

But it's also instructive that the lowest-priced-rooms option came in sixth place out of 26 choices. Though Las Vegas is hardly the Bargain City it was when we published a book of the same name (1993), it still has enough low-price opportunities to make it a cheap domestic vacation for those who put in the time to make it so. Which involves the add-ons and extras that come with a room and that choice placed right behind the lowest-price option in the poll.

The opposite side of the value coin is that no one wants to be taken advantage of, and resort and parking fees often feel exactly like that. Again, we predicted both selections would be near the top and they were.

We'd also say that location has at least something to do with parking fees and transportation in general, though of course many people have a preference: Strip, downtown, neighborhoods. And the voting shows it.

LVAers are gamblers and advantage players, so when you come to Las Vegas, you want to be close to where you have your best shot of coming out in the black.

Most of the rest of the selections have to do with amenities, services, and security. We were interested, when looking at the bottom of the list, to see that pet-friendly is more important to visitors than family-friendly. In fact, Other placed higher than families! Though we still see plenty of kids being dragged along by their parents around here, the days of Las Vegas as a family destination, at least to our readers, are long gone.

    Paris Loyalty
My husband and I have been staying at the Paris Casino for our last three Las Vegas vacations. We have found that the end of the hall rooms on the upper floors are quiet, spacious and have great partial strip views. We also love the Paris restaurants.

    Spa Bath?
In our view there's nothing more relaxing after a hard day's gaming, sight-seeing or shopping than a Jacuzzi :-)

My host always gets me a great room.

    Sportsbook
We've stayed at a lot of places. All, with the exception of the Luxor, have good sportsbooks. The last few years we've stayed mainly out at South Point. We still "casino hop" and get out and about, but we're usually there for Sports Weekends in the Fall and during March Madness. South Point has a great sportsbook and good lounge and unlike the Strip, they aren't trying to shake you down for every dollar they can. We always travel with a group and the Strip hotels have lost a LOT of revenue from us. Instead of staying/being there 4-7 days a trip, it's a day or so only.

    dogs etc...
I agree w/spx94. Dogs, cats and (especially) children belong at home. A casino is an adult environment!

  • Jonas Linde Oct-10-2018
As long as there is a casino...
I go with the cheapest option provided it has a casino. And it is located between the Palms/Rio and Westgate/Hard Rock or Downtown.

    Extras.
I really like a small refer in my room+a safe+ an A/C-heater that works.Strip view? I do not care if I face a wall.
Good VP pay tables, because I play a LOT of Video Poker.

    Happy together
I have been at this long enough to become married to two Strip casinos, two different companies, i.e. comp systems. I am faithful with casino-support payments to both, and this faithfulness assures good relations with Hosts, dealers, restaurant staff, etc. So, I always stay/play at the same hotel(s)/casinos which reduces pre-trip anxiety about my room.

But relationships can hit snags, so from the survey I extracted a few irreconcilable differences should things go south:

     - Kids. I have actually given up on this one. Should there ever be a casino magnate with guts enough to forbid small children on the property, I'm in. Steve Wynn tried, but no go. So, odds are it won't happen.
     - Pets. I expected the worst, but haven't been bothered by pets...yet.
     - A nightly resort fee on comped rooms. No deal.
     - VP/slots become unbearably tight. I'm having suspicions right now.
     - Cleanliness ("other" on the survey) is critical. Gals need tidy rest rooms while they gamble!

    no such thing as . . .
     . . . is it free? (comped)

  • Eileen Oct-10-2018
    Mid Strip Location
I usually choose to stay at the Flamingo. While it isn't as fancy as other casinos it's about as clean and I like the fact that you're pretty much in the middle of all the strip casinos so you can walk either way and spend about the same amount of time dragging yourself back to your room in the wee hours of the morning. I don't rent a car because it's easy enough to shuttle yourself around. While the rooms are comp'd the other Caesars properties just take a while longer to get anywhere else. I guess I just like quick(er) access to different casinos.
Regarding those dogs (never seen a cat and heard somewhere that most casinos don't accept anything but dogs) does anyone know if the hotels set aside specific rooms for animal lovers? I really don't want to stay in a room that's had someone else's dog in it. And I'm sure some people are allergic to animals.

    Also loyal
I choose Paris most frequently for the size of the hotel, ease to get to and from the rooms and games that I like to play so as not to be far afeild at night. I also get comped, so that helps the choice as well. The garage attendants for valet are quick and effiecient and friendly.

    Comfortable Room
We like to relax in our room between gaming sessions and a comfortable bed and work table are important. We will not stay where there are fees for amenities we will not use

  • Doug Bergman Oct-10-2018
    Bottom feeding
I prefer large rooms at least 450 s.f., mid- class hotels at off peak times when I can get a nice room for under $75 with food credit.

    too togh to answer
Many of the possibilities are important to us, but not all at the same time. It certainly depends on the circumstances for a given trip. Sometimes price, sometimes convenience, sometimes past experience, nostalgia, internet, food, etc. Sometimes a bad experience (like the next day's Q about check-in) affect our choices the next time. But circumstances change. We love the Gold Coast, but are hesitant to give Boyd any of our business due to the Players Club changes. We hate resort fees, but sometimes the rest of the deal is too good to pass up.

    MY FAVORITE
We always stay at B..d properties because we are comptd there for 3 days each (we're friends not a married couple)and we put them together for a 6 day fun trip. We've been doing this for years-twice a year and we'll keep on doing it as long as they invite us. We also play almost all the time at their properties, and eat their 2fer buffets in our LVA books. Neither of us eat a lot and buffets are the way for us to get just what we want and not tons of food like most restaurants serve. It's always a fun trip for us and sometimes we even win a little! :)

    picking the hotel
I read the reviews. look for value in amenities, close to other attractions. use comps to cut down on cost. I prefer downtown.

cleanliness --I agree w john Carey . Dogs, cats and (especially) children belong at home. A casino is an adult environment! Miss the old 24 hour coffee shops .

We have avoided the Strip except for the Cosmo (where we are eligible for free parking) and TI (no parking charges). Otherwise we stay downtown, in Summerlin, Henderson or south of strip. Parking and high resort fees just don't do it for us.

  • David Oct-20-2018
    Fees!!
We generally always stay at The Rio or Gold Coast now because I refuse to pay for parking at a hotel I've already paid for a room! We always rent a car which is usually cheaper than taxi or Uber for 4 days anyways.

  • Joe Lipinski Oct-20-2018
    hotels
"Cheap is dead," my Uncle Julio would say. Since the addition of resort fees, I have witnessed the death of really cheap rooms in Vegas. For first time in my life, using Frontier, air fare is less that 3-days hotel. I used to book 6-to-9-day stays and lodging was still less than airfare. Now I am staying 4 days per.

    Favorite hotel
We always stay at Casino Royale. Small and very friendly. Smack in the middle of the strip. Super clean and NO RESORT FEE and FREE PARKING.
