Poll : 10 July - 23 July 2019

Q:

As previewed last week, we're starting production on the new (eighth) edition of Eating Las Vegas 2020 (Eating Las Vegas 2019 can be found here), our annual restaurant guide. For those who don't own a copy, the guide has full descriptions of Las Vegas' "Essential 52" eateries, as picked and independently reviewed by the city's top food writer, John Curtas.

The book also contains chapters on notable steakhouses, buffets, and French and Chinatown restaurants, along with numerous briefly annotated lists of "Additional Recommendations" categorized by specific types of food and beverages: burgers, buffets, desserts, Italian, pizza, Mexican, tacos, sushi, chain restaurants, special diets, wine drinking, and late night.

This poll is a survey on any additional categories you'd like to see us include in the 2020 edition of ELV. Note that these are additional categories to the ones already in the book and listed above, so when you don't see Chinese, steakhouses, burgers, pizza, buffets, etc. in the choices, that's why.

Thanks in arrears for all the suggestions from last week's poll preview, many of which we've added to the selections, and in advance for helping us improve our annual food guide.

Analysis

Thank you all for participating in this poll, which will help us improve Eating Las Vegas 2020

The results, of course, speak for themselves, but we can tell you that we'll enjoy checking out the latest barbecue joints. The food courts are easy to include, as we've reviewed Block 16 at the Cosmopolitan, Eataly at Park MGM, and even the new spread at Palace Station (Salud and Mumfresh) in LVA since they opened in the past year.

As for delis, we can include all the favorites that have been around forever (Weiss, Bagel Cafe, Bagelmania, Carnegie, Greenberg's, etc.), plus the new Sadelle's at Bellagio (though we were entirely underwhelmed by that one).

And yes, brunch, romantic, and outdoor venues will enhance the coverage of places to take dates and loved ones.

All in all, a good haul! Thanks again.

    Don't listen to us
Food critics shouldn't feel constrained to the whims of the majority. I look to food critics to suggest types of food I might not have tasted or thought of on my own.

That said, I somehow missed the preview as usual and suggest sections on the growing Ethiopian and Vietnamese food scenes, and maybe mobile food trucks?

    Preservatives
I've been trying for several years if there is a casino salad bar that does NOT spray preservatives ("stay fresh" "stay white" on their salad greens and root veggies (carrots, radishes etc. In Europe it's forbidden and it was wonderful to be there I am allergic to it and am miserable when I'm in Vegas. Choice is don't eat it anywhere or eat it and get sick.Anybody know?

    P.s.
My above comment notwithstanding, I would also REALLY like to know how John Curtas uses his LVA pocketbook of values coupons.

    I second that...
I second zzdoug’s great recommendation on mobile food trucks! Also would like to see tiki bars and Polynesian food if possible? Love your column and website and Vegas! 😃

    Two more suggestions
I voted, but I would like for out of the way or unique eateries no matter what stuff served.

    American?
Fried chicken? Mac and cheese? Popcorn? Meat loaf? Pot Roast? Mashed potatoes? Corn on the cob? Watermelon? Apple pie? Ice cream?

Hey, I think I have come up with a few, LOL.

    Now I am hungry!

    Quiet?
    I suppose quiet isn't a food group.

But it is high on my list of places I would or would not return to. I will ask for the music volume to be lowered as soon as I walk in. I don't even wait to be seated. What is wrong with these place? Don't they know we want to enjoy a meal and converse without shouting? Rant over. Thanks.

    Eating Vegas
Do not limit the choices to the gourmet end. Nobody likes tiny food except the chef. Find us some really good food you would feed someone you loved.

    Quiet... and TV free!
I second Candy's suggestion for quiet restaurants, and I'd add a place that doesn't have TVs in every corner either. Although, I did check off "romantic" in the survey list and I know my idea of romantic does not include loud music and TVs.

    Another
I think a listing of the best "dinner & a show" would be cool. It could have like "Tina and Tony's Wedding" and "E By Jose Andres" style listings.

    Sadelles
Ditto on "underwhelmed". I wrote a lengthy rant about Sadelles several months back under Dining, and also on my post-Bellagio stay survey. Recently we noted the usual very long lines at the breakfast hour. Of course it is pretty much the only seated breakfast option at Bellagio other than room service. May try again November or December.
