Poll : 19 February - 03 March 2020

Q:

For reasons that don't need explaining here, we've been feeling a bit nostalgic lately about Old Vegas. So we went all the way back to 2007 to resurrect a poll we ran lo these many years on bringing back a casino that no longer exists. Take a trip down Memory Lane and vote for your favorite extinct gambling house, then tell us why you did in the comment boxes. You can vote for as many as you like.

And thanks so much for all the great comments on the poll-preview page. Quite a list we've assembled here -- with the usual excellent assistance from QoD readers. It's gotten to the point where we couldn't do these things without you!

Analysis

This poll attracted a lot of attention, nearly 5,000 votes. It's obviously a topic that's dear to the hearts of our demographic.

The Las Vegas Advisor has been around for nearly 40 years, having been started by Anthony Curtis in 1982 (when he was 25). Most of our subscribers and readers are of the same generation and have been following LVA for decades, collective veterans of one of the greatest cities on Earth.

But oh, the good old days.

Here at LVA, we all predicted that the Stardust would be number one and take a look: Westward Ho is a distant second. The free-room coupon at the 'Dust was the first granted to LVA subscribers (by our old friend Kathy Espin, marketing manager at the time, who later went on to write a guidebook for families for us, Kidding Around Las Vegas). The Stardust lives on in the memories of fans of mob history the world over and the Stardust line was one of the most exciting moments in the lives of old-time wiseguys everywhere. The neon sign was absolutely iconic; Lido de Paris gave Siegfried & Roy their start; and on a personal note, the first time Deke Castleman laid eyes on Jessica Roe was the night that he, she, Anthony, and Blair Rodman (author of Kill Phil and our upcoming book All About Sports Betting) met there to try out a new incarnation of the buffet. (Excuse us for a moment while we wipe our eyes.)

Of course, the Ho was right next door and that foot-long hot dog was in the Top Ten forever. At number two, it placed a little higher than we expected, while the Lady Luck placed a little lower, but hey, every one of the 65 extinct casinos in this poll brings back fond memories of a very different era in Las Vegas.

Thank you all for your reminders in the poll preview of places we overlooked, for your votes, for your comments, and for growing up right along with us as we all experienced the changes that Las Vegas has put us through.

    IP and Little Caesars
For real nostalgia, the IP and Little Caesars (not the big place) got my votes.

IP: Never stayed there, but it was the most interesting overall. Dealers dressed up like celebrities (first we had seen), the classic car museum, and their cafe the Tea Garden had the best Reuben sandwiches. The real 'old Vegas feel' is very much missed.

We would trek over to Little Caesars just to play their 2 or 3 actual old timey-looking penny machines. A jackpot was $.80. Old, creepy feel to the place. The little airplane fuselage-looking car outside. The 'casino' in the movie "Vegas Vacation" where Clark Griswold played his last few dollars on "Guess Which Hand" "and "Rock, Paper, Scissors" always makes us think of Little Caesars, similar atmosphere and facial expressions on the staff.

I'll need more than 1 comment
I checked off 11 of the choices. So I'll need more than 1 comment to tell you why. I could have done more but I cut it to these.

Boardwalk-renewed our vows for the 25th.

Castaways (on the strip) 1st place I stayed my first trip to LV after graduation.

Debbie Reynolds-especially when Debbie or Rip Taylor were there to chat with everyone.

Dunes (the Oasis casino of theirs at the corner) where they actually closed off the front because of flooding while we were there.

Frontier- great cheap place to stay, suite for $79 while I attended a conference at the Riv.

Holy Cow, as I said in the preview, my 1st RF (I also loved the 1/2 size craps table, I think a holdover from Foxy's.

Klondike, a BJ tournament that my wife made the finals (probably won about $30) and my dad and I did not get beyond the 1st table.

Little Caesars, great cheap gambling and was alsways a must stop if we were on the strip on the east side of the street. 3 more choices in my next comment.

    In addition to those above,

Riviera- they always treated us well, we were there the last year they were open and always had a great time.

Silver Slipper, where I first learned how to play craps. tThe dealers helped a lot and the limits were small, and it was always a fun place.

Stardust, how sad!! Such a great place and torn down for nothing all these past few years. One of the greatest "old Vegas" places, and I still have my picture with the Showgirls that they always took out on the casino floor. I guess the real answer to all this is I miss it all! But we still like a lot of what Vegas has now, too. Some things have gotten worse, but that would have probably happened at the old places too.

    Simple Nostalgia
If I could roll back time, it's to Binions where a grizzled, toothless local showed me everything about craps on a $1 table. I remember him trying every different bet every roll just to show me. To his credit, he always said "when you roll do a dealer bet". And of course "Vegas World", where I saw and awesome rock band with a "lead accordian" on our honeymoon in '89.

    Sand's Copa Room
Wish I could go back and see the Rat Pack preform during the time they were filming Oceans 11. The time when people would get dressed in their evening gowns and suits for a night out on the town.

    Cancer Free
Silver City when it went non-smoking. The casino wasn't that particularly interesting but at least you could breath the air!

    AHHH The memories!
The Stardust had so much "real vegas" history! Great rates, shows and food. I truly miss it. The Lady Luck was the 1st Casino/Hotel I stayed at beginning in 1991. Nice, small place. Westward Ho had a great lunch counter! The Sands was Historic to the Rat Pack, The Maxim had great deals and O'Shea's was always lucky for me. Those were great Days!

    BINIONS/DEBBIE REYNOLDS
Binions because It was a old time casino from "the good old days" with all the nostalgia connected with it. Debbie Reynolds - NOT because of gambling - but because of the museum. BTW: We NEVER go to Las Vegas anymore because of the nickel/dime fees and the way corporate America has ruined it. Go to Laughlin now, particularly the Avi where they, at least, make you feel welcome.

  • Luis Feb-19-2020
    The good old Times!
In those times they cared about the customer and wanted to keep them, so they tried a little harder, It was all about the service, customer service. You where treated with respect, now as back then it was all about the financial gain, except, they knew how to intice the customer, make them feel as if they where gaining something, not like now a days, now you just feel cheated, gauged. Ahh, the good old days, Themed hotel-casinos, even family friendly casinos had their days, sure hope they come back.

    BC and IP
I loved BC for it's FPDW and they used to be liberal with comps, all right on the strip. I loved IP for a decent blackjack game.

    silver city
Best little restaurant on the strip. Didn't even mind the wait to be called to a table.

    Real 3:2 BJ
I checked the places I remember having single- and double-deck, low stakes, real 3:2 blackjack. Also, I miss the fabulous food deals and best clam chowder in the world at the Horseshoe. And, the original Bingo Palace for good single-deck BJ, buffet and "Take Your Old Aunt Alice To The Friendly Bingo Palace" advertising. Now, Palace Station is just another grind joint. Currently, I play mostly California Indian casinos.
