Poll : 19 December - 01 January 2019

Q:

What's your favorite non-gambling activity in and around Las Vegas?

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. We envision this as a survey of general activities (just hiking, for example). We plan on running future polls with specific activities (hiking at Red Rock, Mt. Charleston, Lake Mead, etc.) for the categories receive the most votes.

Analysis

No big surprises from the top three: eating, eating at buffets, and seeing shows are certainly the top non-gambling activities other than sleeping -- though that wasn't included, since it's assumed that Vegas visitors will have to sleep at some point.

The fourth top vote-getter, though, was a bit unexpected, though it probably shouldn't have been. People-watching is a great activity in or out of casinos and Las Vegas is one of the great destinations in the world for it, especially along Fremont Street. Best of all, it's totally free.

Likewise, museums and galleries placing in the top five is a shocker; we never would have predicted that. Either a lot more people are going to the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, Nevada State Museum, Clark County Museum, and Springs Preserve than we think or there's a certain amount of ... irony ... in that ranking. Actually, we're being a little flippant. We know that plenty of visitors take in the Mob Museum, Neon Museum, Nevada Atomic Testing Museum, Erotic Heritage Museum, Madame Tussaud's, Cannabition, etc.

Beyond those, the selections pretty much fall in a predictable line, though sex and visiting family and friends placed lower than we might've predicted and shooting and driving around the city higher.

Our demographic isn't much for clubbing, obviously, or driving race cars, while it's a toss-up between bowling and strip clubs. ("What would you rather do tonight, honey? Go bowling or get lap dances?")

As we mentioned, this was a general survey on activities. Now that we know your preferences, we can get more specific in future polls.

Thanks to everyone for casting well over 5,000 votes and all the comments, some of them highly amusing.

    Hookers
No, not hiring hookers. That would fall under the Sex option. And not playing the "Is she a hooker or not" game. That's People Watching.

I'm talking about just keeping track of how many times you get approached by a hooker, and/or how long the hooker keeps the conversation going before she gives up.

For the record, my personal highest quantity was 7 for a 5 day trip in November 2016. My longest conversation was at least 5 minutes (and her persistence almost paid off...).

    People!Hookers! Food!
People watching, totally. The best is on the FSE,by far.
hang at the whiskey licker bar. A place to sit and drink.Excellent.
I get approached inside the casinos from a VERY attractive female, occasionally.Too much eye make up is the give away.Always a lot of cleavage. A local acting drunk or an "independent contractor?"
More on the strip than downtown.
Sometimes,on the street at a crosswalk! We were a group of 5 guys, waiting for the cross walk sign and a blond lady, wearing a trench coat flashed us,exposing everything that she had.
Prostitution is against the law in Clark County.Too bad.

Food! 5 dudes in a buffet?Danger.Fat boys can really eat a lot.
12-14 dessert plates for 2 of those foodies. The buffet/food people came out,"Hey,where are all of the dessert plates?"
The fat boys had them on the table, stacked up neatly.

Drinking alcohol. Continuous gambling usually ensures a steady flow of drinks.

Gambling is fun,but it can be expensive after a few drinks, when your logic goes

    Hiking
Hiking is mentioned in the question, but it isn't a selection. That's my choice, by far.

    hiking
I wrote in last week to suggest hiking as an option. Don't see it!

  • Deke Castleman Dec-19-2018
    Hiking
So sorry. Just an oversight. Hiking is now included.

    Golf
There are a lot of golfers that go to Vegas to play some great golf courses. This is my favorite and should be a part of the survey.

    contradictory
Having picked both dining and shopping, I realize those are somewhat contradictory choices. If you eat too much, your shopping is going to be restricted to accessories, fragrance and beauty, and gifts for others since, clothes-wise, nothing is going to fit anymore.

    entertain
    listen to a live band.

  • Thomas Simmons Dec-19-2018
    Golf
Try to play almost every trip even in the summer

  • Bob Orme Dec-19-2018
    LVMS
I go to Las Vegas at least once a year to attend/work races at LVMS.

    Shooting
"Shooting" was an interesting option. Leave it to LVA to include a little gallows humor.

I remember shortly after 10/1, LVA ran a QoD about where to go if you wanted to enjoy shooting an AK-47. Some thought it was in poor taste. LVA promptly yanked the QoD saying it was "too early" for a such a question.
It has not reappeared, afaik, leaving me and many others without advice for where to go in Vegas to experience this unique and thrilling entertainment option.

    People watching!!!!
The best people travel about Las Vegas. definitely do the hooker/not hooker look out... love to do this during the summer when there are less and less clothing...

  • King of the Bovines Dec-22-2018
    If I win the lottery...
I would want to set up a Lay-Z-Boy nearby the D under the Fremont Street Experience and just sit there and people watch.

Heck, I might even play keno on their big board as well!

    Firearms
The Gun Store is a fun venue for people that have NEVER shot a firearm. Full auto machine guns and a variety of semi auto pistols.
If you have a small frame, don't choose the BIG hand guns.
The machine guns are fun to shoot. Your choice of paper targets.
I still have a zombie clown target on my wall at home.

    Mr
Don't forget the pinball hall of fame. Great place to kill the day, cheap, fun, and friendly.
