Poll : 17 January - 30 January 2018

Q:

This poll was suggested by a reader and now that the paid-parking situation seems to have resolved into a permanent policy (especially no more free parking for locals), plus the fact that we haven't run a poll on parking for nearly two years, we thought we'd revisit the issue. Obviously, only one answer will apply, so check the one that is closest to your preference.

We tried to come as close as possible to all the choices, but if we didn't hit your nail on the head, please let us know in the comments.

If you want to brush up on the latest parking info, on the top navigation menu, hover over Stay, then click on Parking Fees.

This is a 100% no for me. I’ve never paid to park on the Strip and I never will.
44% (771)
This is a 98% no for me. I’ve paid to park on occasion when the alternative was just too difficult, but I try to avoid it as much as possible.
24% (416)
I still go to the Strip, but I don’t drive there. I’d rather pay for a cab or Lyft than to feel like I’m getting gouged by the casinos.
9% (162)
I usually stay at Strip casinos, so I have in-out privileges at all the casinos in the same company, which makes it worth it to me.
8% (134)
I still go to the Strip, but I always look for the least inconvenient alternative to paying for parking — a free shuttle from a locals casino or free-parking garage nearby.
7% (126)
I like staying on the Strip, but I try to stay at a hotel-casino that doesn’t charge for parking, so I’m centrally located and can walk, or take the Deuce and Monorail, up and down the Boulevard.
4% (74)
I don’t love paying where I’ve parked free for decades, but I also don’t sweat a ten-spot, especially when I’m spending a couple hundred for dinner and a show or gambling the night away.
3% (61)
I pay to self-park and valet park in major cities all over the world and can well afford it, so I never give it a second thought.
1% (19)

Analysis

If ever there were a self-explanatory result for a poll, this is it. Out of 1,763 votes, 1,187 of them (68%) are 98% to 100% against ponying up the parking fees to visit Las Vegas Strip casinos.

Plus, another 9% go to the Strip, but don't drive, opting instead to pay for transportation there and back, rather than give parking money to the casinos. And another 11% either stay at a Strip hotel that doesn't charge for parking or make it a point to find whatever alternative to paid parking is least inconvenient. All in all, nearly nine out of ten respondents won't pay unless they absolutely must.

Equally telling, only 19 voters out of the whole total don't mind paying.

We overlooked one selection, as noted in the comments: having an affinity credit card or a high enough players club tier to get free parking. Thanks to those who pointed it out -- and it's the reason why we're running the poll previews, so we don't overlook choices like that, which are obvious to some of you, but not necessarily to us!

And thanks to everyone who voted and added their voices to the poll; nearly 50 comments also show how strongly Vegasphiles feel about the issue -- and again, almost entirely not in favor.

    Not worried, but...
My trip this year was the first where I had to pay for parking. I don't generally visit the strip, but we spent two nights at Luxor this time. Therefore, all visits to MGM properties happened over those two nights so we didn't have to pay more than once.

I'm used to Atlantic City, where paying to park has been de rigueur for as long as I've been going there. Ultimately, it's not going to factor into where I choose to visit.

    So many other choices
We're locals and don't go to the Strip anymore. There are so many other choices and we have seen the increase in the out of State cars at places like The Palms, Gold Coast, Orleans, etc. I would think this would also hurt the car rental business. That was one of the greatest perks of coming to Las Vegas.

  • doufous Jan-17-2018
    Credit Cards
I do not pay for parking because I have both the Total Rewards and Mlife credit cards which give me free parking. Both cards have no fees. With the Total Rewards card you need to charge $5000 per year to keep your status.

Still go to the strip but I won't pay for parking.
I still go and stay there when I want to, but I only park where it's free. Stayed at Mirage, parked at TI, stayed at Vdara parked at PH. If I use an MGM garage then I keep an eye on the time and keep it under an hour. I have changed a few things though when shopping. I used to always go to Aria or Bellagio for pastries Now I go to The Venetian instead, since they are similiar in price and taste, but The Venetian offers free parking so I can shop and eat a meal there if I wish and not have to worry about the time I take.I prefer off strip casinos anyways since they give more bang for the buck in comps, so on other trips I avoid the strip anyways.

South Point Las Vegas giving $1 million in bonuses, cites tax reform bill
I would like all casinos to eliminate parking and resort fees... https://www.cdcgamingreports.com/south-point-las-vegas-giving-1-million-in-bonuses-cites-tax-reform-bill/

    Mostly irrelevant
I voted "100% a no for me", but not for the reasons you're implying. You seem to have left out an obvious choice. It's not that I never pay for parking because I'm opposed to it (although I am). It's because I almost never have a car on the Strip. Your choices for non-parkers seem to imply that we're doing it out of principle or out of spite. Whereas, in actuality, I'm not parking on the Strip because I never had a reason to and rarely do. In 50 trips to Vegas I've rented a car for maybe 2 or 3 days total, usually when I'm venturing somewhere like Red Rock. Most of the time, I take cabs from the airport to the hotel, and on the Strip, I either walk or cab it from hotel to hotel. It's what I've always done, so it's not like I'm purposely walking/cabbing to avoid paying for parking. It's that the parking was fortunately never an issue for me.

    Get used to it
Sure, a new fee that wasn't there before sucks, but is it really a deal breaker? Not for me.

On the flip side, since I fly in and rent a car, the rental costs are really the cause of me renting for only a couple days and doing the Uber thing for the rest of my trip.

What really sucks is that many of the small shops on the strip that have maybe 30 parking spots, now have to hire security to prevent non-customers from parking for free.

    the bus
no more rental cars for me...the bus routes take me to where I want to go!

    Strip Parking
I didn't vote because I couldn't figure out which response was closest to my situation. We picked up the MGM credit card (don't use it at all but no annual fee) which entitles us to free parking - we put it in a baggie with our other slot cards and only dig them out when coming to LV.

bad idea.resort fees, pay for parking,no more rental cars, saving a lot on airline trips.just as nice at home casinos.

  • Doug Bergman Jan-17-2018
    Unaffected
I stopped going to the strip long before casinos started charging for parking, fleeing the long lines and high prices and many other fees. Given the high real estate values along the strip and willingness of the hoi polloi to put up with all kinds of BS to be at the fancy places, I figured it was inevitable and I was frankly surprised how long they waited to start charging for parking. My Hyatt credit card gives me mlife gold status for when I need to get over there but it's only once or twice a year. Ever since live entertainment has given way to EDM and piped-in pop hits, there aren't many places on the strip that interest me anymore. Much happier out at the suburban casinos.

  • Gary Reininger Jan-17-2018
    Not Concerned
I never rent a car so this additional fee doesn't worry me. I always stay downtown and usually at a Boyd Casino because I refuse to pay a resort fee. If I want to visit the strip, I will buy a 3 day bus pass and use the express bus to get back and forth. It's about a 20 minute ride.

  • Michael Rankins Jan-17-2018
    Shrug...
As some others have mentioned, there's no response in the poll that applies to me. In many years of visiting Vegas, I've rented a car a grand total of once. That decision has nothing to do with the cost or non-cost of parking. It's just far more convenient to grab a cab, or these days, a Lyft.

  • JP Jan-17-2018
    Greedy, greedy
Quite a while ago I quit going to the Strip very often b/c the play is so poor. I'm lucky enuff to have friends in LV for whom I housesit for 4-5 weeks at a time. They live in Summerlin so I frequent the casinos out that way, plus the M and several Henderson casinos. The Strip has become a giant ripoff and I'd only go if there were a specific thing I wanted to do/see--certainly not to gamble. This year, a friend and I have decided to splurge on Bally's Sterling brunch and will park at Ellis Island or elsewhere on Paradise and walk. Occasionally, friends visit while I'm housesitting who want to see the Strip. We'll park off the Strip and walk, or if they want to pay, ok, but not me. This is a cash grab by the casinos. Any casino will take plenty of your $$ over time unless you're a skilled advantage player. They shouldn't try to make me pay for parking to lose my money. Shame on them.

  • Mark Elslager Jan-17-2018
    Found a loop hole...
I have been coming to Vegas for 25 years, and always rent a car. Yes I was upset when they started to charge for parking since my members cards are not at a free level. But not as upset as the increasing resort fees. But I still trudge over to the Strip.
Two comments for the parking fee:
I noticed that the lots are less busy, and very easy to find prime spots by the evlevators.
I have also found a loophole for the parking and as of yet have not had to pay. So now it is more of a pleasure to use the lots.
Having said that, if I were to share this "loophole" I know my pleasure will soon fade. Sorry! wish I could devised one for the resort fees. LOL

  • deathslittlesis Jan-17-2018
    Parking
I grudgingly paid to park a few times for concerts or Cirque, but eventually gave in and got the MGM credit card for the free parking perk. I tend to stay off-Strip at places that don't charge.

  • O2bnVegas Jan-17-2018
    parking
Don't drive in Vegas, use shuttles or cabs when necessary. Still physically able to walk one end of Strip to the other; enjoy any opportunity to walk to get in some exercise while in town.

  • Michael Rodehaver Jan-17-2018
    Screw 'em
The casinos make more than enough money from me as it is. I absolutely refuse to pay to park a car on their property as well.
I'll ride the damn Deuce before I pay a parking fee.
Between tighter machines, worse games, higher food prices and getting nickel-and-dimed by the "F-U" fees, I enjoy 'Vegas less and less each year.
I still go, mind you. Hasn't reached that point yet. But I've definitely had second thoughts.

  • Charles Carpenter Jan-17-2018
    Paid parking
I will NOT pay for parking at a casino where I gamble!

  • [email protected] Jan-17-2018
no car to park in Vegas
We never drive in Vegas. Nothing to park! unfortunately, this means we have never been to Red Rock, South Point or M Resort because I do not believe there is a cheap and convenient way to get there without a car?

  • Susan Miller Jan-17-2018
    No parking for us
I can't answer this question. We're from Michigan & we fly in, take cabs or just walk the strip. We don't rent a car so parking is a non issue for us.

  • [email protected] Jan-17-2018
Off to the "Biggest Little City in the World!"
Well what can I say Vegas, you were fun while it lasted. Now for my $750-$1000 Miami airfare, I am going elsewhere. A place where the comps, play, hopsitality, are "Vegas of the 90's." I yearn for a real city, a place near the snow caped mountains. The place where on my 16th birthday; I saw my first and only true casino dinner show, "Hello Hollywood Hello", at the MGM Grand. Yea, a place where through URComped and a three night comp Excalibur room offer: I was offered three nights in an executive suite, free play, and resort credit, at The Nugget. For me, Reno you are my Shining Star: for you are where I lost my gambling virginity at the Eldorado, on my 21st birthday. Yea a real town, with real memories. Vegas it was nice to know you, bye-bye.

  • jay Jan-17-2018
    Gouging
Now that I can now gamble in practically every state and province in North America you would think the vegas casinos would be doing anything and everything to bring us in but they seem to be doing the opposite.
    - Cheap rooms, inexpensive food ie 1.99 steak and eggs, free valet parking, free booze - all seem to be a thing of the past

  • Sandra Ritter Jan-17-2018
    Paid Parking
I used to get rent a car every trip but I no longer do because I want to build my perks at CET, therefore stay on the strip (I never go to Rio anymore). But if I still were getting a car this would anger me royally. I'd either stop renting a car or stop going to Vegas.

  • Jerry Maxey Jan-17-2018
    Big Jer
Paid parking was a game changer for us. We no longer even visit LAS Vegas due to the resort fee's, Hotel check in fee's paid parking and the disappearance of comp's.LV has feed us out and lost us.

  • Vicki Emerson Jan-17-2018
I go to the Strip less now
I am a local and go to the Strip even less now due to paid parking. A friend came to town so I splurged and spent $10 to park at the Cosmopolitan, had lunch there using my 2 for 1 LVA coupon for the Wicked Spoon (saving me approx. $38!) and then we walked next door to Bellagio to go view the Conservatory. I, however, had additional company at Christmas and very much wanted to see the holiday display at the Conservatory but didn't go at all because of the $20 valet fee now at Bellagio. This was very disappointing!

  • Don Woodward Jan-17-2018

What it has done is cut down on us taking our rental car and visiting numerous casinos. When we stay at MGM flagged properties now, we will visit several of those. But then we DON'T go to the Caesar's group since we have to pay. And if the parking lot at an MGM is inconvenient, we don't stop there. So it really has cut down on our gambling as we formerly "spread it around". And the continuing erosion of Las Vegas "value" in visiting has reduced our twice annual trip to once a year, and we now visit local casinos. Increasing resort fees, paid parking, stricter comps, decreasing poker pay tables, and other negatives has really made Vegas less attractive. Perhaps after next cyclical economic downturn will wake up the corporate shills, much like post-911 and the Great Recession did.

  • Frank Mabry Jan-17-2018
    I Won't Gamble
I won't gamble at any casino that wants to charge for parking even if I get free parking next door.

Snakes alive on strip, sleeping at Red Rock
Since retiring we educators visit in jan-march. Visited annually summertime since 83. Now have mgm mastercard. No problem free parking for strip dinner or show. Never gamble now on strip other than wife's rare VP semi value play or my irresistable craps stand waitin for next Big E show. Need to walk distances daily. Stay downtown then timeshare week. Use MRB religiously. Great day hikes and decent birding and photo opps at RR Canyon, Valley of Fire, Henderson bird refuge, etc. Loved Caesars in 80's and Mirage and Harrahs and Flamingo in 90's and all adjacent venues. Great comedy and E impersonators everywhere. Miss it.
    Long live Big Elvis!!
Will play EI until after 3rd craft brew. Cute impersonators.
Oh yeah, parking. Screw paying. And screw tossin dice there. Boomer55 out.

    strip parking
I would pay if necessary while staying at a strip hotel (I was at the Wynn recently) but otherwise avoid the strip.

  • ntm449 Jan-17-2018
    Tom
Live 90 miles from Vegas. Visit and stay 8 - 10 times a year. Haven't stayed or been on the Strip since parking fees began. Downtownand Henderson casinos, the Orleans and SouthPoint are now destinations of choice.

  • Mr. Seafood 21 Jan-17-2018
    DIAMOND PLAYER
It seems as though there is never an option to vote on an answer relating to players cards. I always rent a car and do NOT pay for parking at any CET(Total Rewards) casino's. If you are a Platinum or Diamond player you don't pay for parking. As long as I can get a good rate on a rental car it beats paying cab fares to go everywhere. As others have mentioned, I am also getting the MGM Credit card. Until I have it though I will not go to a MGM property and pay for parking. I don't play much at MGM casino's since I don't get any perks from them. As long as I can get my rooms comped and don't pay for parking I will be coming to Vegas. But if the suits keep tightening things up, the day will come when they are going to lose the gamblers. I hope that day never comes.

  • Kevin Rough Jan-17-2018
    MLife Gold
I park at a MLife casino and venture from there as I am MLife Gold, which I have through their partnership with Hyatt. Although we spend more time off-strip than on-strip anymore because off-strip casinos have better gambling.

  • Duane Pfau Jan-17-2018
    checking it out
been going to LV on and off for 30 years though haven't been out there for the last 4 years so I've missed most of the new fees. used to Atlantic City parking fees for at least 15 years so the parking I'm used to. Going to visit LV sometime this year and am looking at the downtown and local casinos to cut back on the add on fees. Also want to check out Reno for future trips as Vegas has changed a lot over 30 years and not so much for the better

  • Texas Transplant Jan-18-2018
Parking Fees Definitely affected where i stay/gamble
If the strip casinos are going to charge for parking, plus offer only 6/5 BJ, and poor video poker odds, i will not be going there...period.

Just visited LV in December - Did NOT stay at Harrahs as I used to do - REFUSED to pay $10 a day parking even when a hotel guest. Stayed at Treasure Island. Very convenient free parking. Nice rooms, great location

I had a rental car and, unlike other trips did not drive to any other strip casino. Walked and gambled at TI plus Casino Royale across the street. None of my usual gambling session at MGM, Paris, etc. On this trip about 20% of my gambling was at TI/Casino Royale,Drove downtown and did about 30% o my gambling there mostly at Golden Gate (used the LVA $25 match play coupon), the rest of the time was at the Rampart where they have free parking, good video poker odds, 3/2 BJ and generally treat customers very good.

i will do my best NOT to go to the strip casinos that charge for parking. too many, much better alternatives.

    Tip Less and Tell Them
I will play Mandalay Bay's blackjack, but will tip less and tell the dealer, and a pit supervisor, the lower tip will pay for the parking rip-off. Will it help? I doubt it, but I will feel a little better.

    Emperor
So you want me to patronize your glittering establishment--pay too much for a room or food, and gamble with high limits, tight machines, and lousy rules--and you want to charge me 10 or 20 bucks to park at your giant gilded commode??

    Bite me!

  • John Goodale Jan-23-2018
    Free, but don't like it
The concept of paying for parking in Vegas feels like fingernails on a chalkboard. However, we've yet to pay anything after many, many visits to Strip properties the last couple years, due to the Total Rewards and MLife credit cards someone else has mentioned.
So, in reality nothing has changed for us, other than needing to swipe our card on the way in/out.

  • Michael Seigal Jan-24-2018
    Pay parking
free parking on the strip has gone the way $3.00 table games have gone. If you like to play on the strip it cost no more to park than a single bet at minimum play. Suck it up & enjoy your day

  • Jonathan Selavka Jan-26-2018
    Free Parking For Hotel Guests
I dislike the paid parking and tend to stay at hotels that at least provide free parking to their own hotel guests. I also have the MLife and Total Rewards credit cards that provide free parking to their various affiliated hotels, which gives me a lot of choices.

  • Gill Strand Jan-26-2018
    Credit Card
Finally broke down and got a casino credit card. Resort fees are irritating enough ($30+ a day?) but paying for parking to get into a gambling establishment? Places that, unlike the rest of Metropolitan America, own all the parking lots that surrounds them.

  • James Baldwin Jan-27-2018
    Parking
T.I. has the best deal with no charge for parking. The resort tax is something I still try to avoid. I look at those expenses before selecting a place to stay.

not only does the strip have poor vp schedules but this lowers my odds again sports are not any better so I will always stay at boyds or southpoint

  • Rob Reid Feb-03-2018
    More reasons not go go
We stopped playing at the strip years ago and moved our play downtown. We have taken trips to the strip to eat or see shows since we still have Diamond status at CZ. We probably won't renew that this year, and will likely stop coming to the strip altogether. There are lots of off strip casinos and other options that fill the gap.

  • Jahnke Feb-03-2018
    Strip parking
I don't understand why any business would want to alienate their customers. It seems to me that by charging for parking, the casinos are discouraging the locals and the people driving over from nearby states to come to their casinos. People only have so much money in their budgets to spend on entertainment and getaway weekends. When the casinos charge for parking, resort fees, more for food than they used to, etc., it leaves less money for gambling. And the casino executives wonder why gambling revenue is down the last few years! Why go to Vegas for your getaway weekend when there are other casinos closer to your house that don't charge and arm and a leg for everything. And the locals can certainly patronize the neighborhood casinos where they don't charge for parking and can eat less expensively.

  • Andrew74 Feb-03-2018
    not paying to park
I will never pay to park at a casino! Basically they are losing my business over 10 or 20 bucks, when I would probably lose 10 times that amount while in the casino! I wonder what affect paid parking has had on the restaurants in these casinos? Probably not a good one! I don't see it changing since they just doubled down by increasing parking fees. All we can do is not patronize these casinos since all they listen to is the bottom line.

  • WuAixin Feb-11-2018
    Gamble Off-Strip
It's bad enough that Strip casinos have tighter machines, but you have to deal with one-armed bandits in the parking lots, too.
