Poll : 02 August - 15 August 2017

Q:

This poll was suggested by a reader of Simplifying Las Vegas 2017, an e-guidebook to Las Vegas by Mike Attisano, an old friend of LVA who’s been writing about Vegas for more than a decade.

About a month ago, we answered a QoD with an excerpt from his book, which a correspondent bought (it’s available on Kindle and Nook for $4.99), found a cool section called “Getting Pumped,” put it together with our previous poll about only-in-Vegas indulgences, and sent in the idea for a survey on how you get psyched up for your trip to Sin City.

You can select as many choices as you like (and thanks go to Mike Attisano for a number of them) and as always, we love comments and we suspect you do too; we got dozens of great ones on the last poll.

Analysis

No surprise that gambling (34%) is the clear winner in this poll. Even though casinos are within a few hours of all the major population centers in the U.S., Las Vegas is still the players; promised land.

We're also not surprised that partying (implied by staying up all night) placed second or that getting drunk placed fifth, though we doubt that visitors sleep all day; there's too much to do during daylight hours to stay in a hotel room. "We can sleep at home!"

Nor do the dining splurges come as a shock; Vegas has many of the greatest restaurants in the nation, which is why we publish Eating Las Vegas every year.

Where the head-scratchers start is with #4, smoking cigars. That's a lot higher than we'd have bet on and might indicate that more men voted than women in this poll. However, spa treatments and bathing topless placing sixth and seventh might negate that assumption (though we wouldn't be surprised if at least a few men also checked the "bathing topless" box!).

The big shocker is visiting the legal brothels at #9, with 78 men (for sure) voting for it. Maybe it shouldn't be, since Nevada is the only state where it's legal and heavily supervised, thus as safe as it can be.

Smoking cigarettes (#11) is definitely a guilty pleasure, as is, perhaps, smoking pot, though that's still so new that visitors probably aren't used to it enough to plan on it.

One wag (there's always one) wrote to us privately, thanking us for including the secretary; he sent a photo of her and we can understand why!

    Of Course
I practice my gambling skills for a couple of weeks before the trip. Also, one must decide how much money to take and where it will come from.

    lva book
The LVA coupon book is read and highlighted so I can use as many of the coupons as possible. It is reviewed continuously so I do not forget anything. In the morning in Vegas I plan where I am going that day to use as many coupons as possible!!!!!!!!

    Vegas Prep
Walking more at home to prepare myself for the miles we will walk in Vegas. Eating less food so we can slim down slightly before unintentionally overeating in Vegas. (It happens every time.) I never buy show tickets for the day of arrival as anything can happen when flying coach. We plan which brunch to attend at once, as we always arrive hungry after 4 hours on the plane. "Vegas vacation" is our favorite movie even thought we can't stand Wayne Newton. (Worst show ever at the old Stardust.)

    Map it out
I'm at my local casino about once a week, so the actual Vegas gambling is somewhat secondary (only somewhat). But there's so much more to do, I gotta get a battle plan ready. I tend to look at Google Maps - A LOT!

For example, my next trip in November, after getting my rental, I'm heading to Primm for the afternoon, then Laughlin for the night. Next day, Oatman & Kingman AZ and maybe Grand Canyon and Skywalk, then back to Laughlin. Next day, Nelson, Hoover Dam & Bridge walk, then some misc stuff in Vegas, outside of the tourist areas.

Return the car late in the day, then spend 3 nights at Ballys for my convention, doing regular strip / downtown stuff.

Depends on the trip. Our next one at the end of this month, Vegas is a starting & ending point for a 10 day trip for my wife and I. Actually visiting more in AZ than anywhere else plus doing some scouting/research for retirement in a few years. If it's a boys trip on the Harleys, we hit it hard. Ride hard, drink hard and live it up for a few days. We don't plan much, just wing it as we go. If we see something we like, we do it. Gambling is part of the scene, at least for me. Always take my LVA coupon book too.

I take the latest copy of the Advisor on the airplane and share it with other passengers going to LAS--show them the best deals, etc... to get ready for our arrival! Unfortunately, on a recent trip everyone sitting around me was going to Boise, the next stop!

    Getting ready for 'Vegas.
In preparation for a LOT of walking,I get into shape a week B-4.
I'll get some 2 dollar bills at the bank for tips and carry an RFID case for my credit cards. I'll pack my carry on days in advance and go through a check list.Practice and study my VP game, check the LVA for news and events.Charge my phone and electric shaver.

    Well Prepared!
This is not brown-nosing but I type out a day-by-day itinerary based on my LVA coupons and some from the American Casino Guide. I'll find a show for my wife and me, then go to the coupons to get the buffet or meal either in or at the nearest casino to make efficient use of our time. After 20+ years of up to 4 visits a year from the east coast, I still get psyched for LV. I'm already bragging that for my trip in September, I've kicked it up a notch: I usually try to do Vegas on the cheap by combining comped room offers but this time we're doing Wynn's with a panoramic view of the strip room before we go to Sam's Town, where I qualify for a suite. This especially motivates my wife, who's used to going to LV with Mr. Cheapo!

    Our last trip.
We have been going to Las Vegas since 1984 on our 25 anniversary. this will be our 53 trip. So many great memories. We used to go Sunday to Friday when we were working. Now we go for 10 days. we will both be 79 later this year and that 5 hours plus trip from N.Y. is too much now. Our first trip was our first trip without our four children. It was a great run but I guess all things must come to a end. Booking the plane is no longer fun but we still get excited as the departure day gets closer. Have already checked out all our coupons and our children have given us gift cards for Binion's Steak House and The Golden Nugget because for the first time we will be down town only.

I always check out the top 10 Vegas Values in the LVA Advisor, because that's always on my to do list when I'm in Vegas. Always make a point of going to Ellis Island for their steak special at least once. I check the shuttle schedules, & plan my bouncing routine, taking in Big Elvis @ Harrah's, the downtown light show, and check what casinos are offering 5,10 or 15x points too! We make a list of our daily plans to include our meal bogo's etc. By the time we leave, (which is in 3 weeks), we know EXACTLY what we're doing EVERY DAY!! I'm ALREADY psyched!!

    Swingers
I watch the beginning of Swingers with Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughan heading to Vegas.

    Movies
We watch "Vegas Vacation" because it was the in flight movie on our first trip to Las Vegas. Also love watching Oceans 11 remake. It's fun to see places in Vegas movies that you have been to.

How do I get excited about Vegas?
I look for the cheapest flights. I look for free rooms and plan the use of coupons in our books (including the LVA book). I like being able to make it through a trip to Vegas without ever using cash money for food. On my most recent trip, we used the LVA coupon for the Rio buffet along with the Caesars points to pay for our dinners. I'm definitely a follower of the Frugal Gambler.

    NO THANK YOU
We first went to Las Vegas for our 20th Anniversary in 1997. We have been there 27 times, but stopped going in Sept of 2011 (a little over 14 years). But no more!!! Lousy VP, less comps, resort fees and now have to pay for parking. Come on!!! Our $$ now goes to Reno, Council Bluffs, Atlantic City, New Orleans, NY, Penn, Ont etc.....!It was fun, but as we lose our $$ gambling I hate the feeling of the corporate a** wipes with their hand in my other pocket taking $$ that they don't need to survive. RAPE!!!!

I love craps, so I always go back to the book and review all the different odds on each bet (Pass and Don't Pass) so I can make sure I am getting the right bets in, the correct multiples, and of course correct payouts!

    No formal planning
I book a flight and a hotel a couple of weeks out and show up. Oh, and my wife schedules a massage. The only other thing I do prior to the trip is an hour or two every day of card counting and basic strategy practice for a week.

Although, with all of the nickel and dime changes at the casinos I don't enjoy the trips as much as I used to. We used to come 3-4 times per year but now it's 1-2 years between trips. I typically bet $2-9 hundred per hand (more on splits and doubles) for 2-3 hours per day and all I hear from my host is you didn't play long enough to get anything other than a room comp. As a result, we don't come as often. Sure miss the old days, we had a lot of fun.
