Poll : 05 December - 18 December 2018

Q:

We have a new blog on this website called Living Local (and Large at Low Cost) in Las Vegas. It's written by Jeffrey Compton, whom some of you old-timers might remember is the author of one of the first books we ever published, The Las Vegas Advisor Guide to Slot Clubs (1993); he now runs CDC Gaming Reports, one of the world's largest gaming-industry business-news websites. Mr. Compton has been around (and not just in Las Vegas) a long time and in this blog, he tackles the unique opportunities and challenges of being a local Las Vegan.

The blog inspired us to create a poll about being or becoming a local in our fair city.

The questions are: Do you live in Las Vegas? If not and you could live in Las Vegas, would you and why? If you wouldn’t live in Las Vegas, why not?

We’ve collected a lot of reasons for and against living or relocating here (including a number of great suggestions from many of you in the poll preview; thank you!), but certainly not all. Vote for the ones that most closely represent your feelings and add others are you see fit in the comment boxes.

Analysis

LasVegasAdvisor.com is, of course, a website frequented mostly by Las Vegas aficionados (along with a few noteworthy detractors). As such, you'd expect the kind of results that this poll generated.

For example, four out of the top five vote-getters (40%) don't live here and would like to, though only 9% want to relocate full-time; the other 31% are prospective part-timers.

Two out of the top-six vote-getters (17%) are from respondents content to visit Las Vegas, having no dreams or ambitions of living here, while those who voted for eight of the next 11 selections (32%) might like to give living in Las Vegas a try, but for various reasons (from a preference for the past to gaining weight at buffets) can't or won't.

One result we found interesting, given how many timeshare units Las Vegas claims, is that only 19 voters admit to owning timeshares here, while 30 consider little Pahrump preferable to the big city.

Finally, 105 voters live in Las Vegas and love it, while only 13 either used to live here and left or still live here and need to get out. That result concurs with our empirical sense about being Las Vegans: Nine out of ten residents really appreciate Las Vegas for the life it gives them.

Thanks to everyone who voted, commented, and offered suggestions for selections in the poll preview.

    Snowbird getaway
We come to Vegas for January and February each year to get away from the Michigan winters. There is always something to do or see that is different each year. So many choices of shows, museums, parks/landscapes restaurants, and of course gambling in small doses.

    Fortunate
I was fortunate enough to live in Las Vegas for a little over six months and become a blackjack dealer at a local casino. Truly loved not having to stay up all night to enjoy Vegas. My usual three day trips to Vegas are total sleep deprivation at best. Living there let me enjoy Vegas at a different pace and most of all, the true local atmosphere. Family health issues prompted me to return to Texas. I do plan to move back as soon as possible.

    Dry Air
I love Las Vegas but every time I stay for three days my nose starts to bleed from the dry air.

Been there, done that. I found the crookedness of the doctors and other professionals I encountered while living in Vegas for 6 years dampened my quality of living. I think the money grab by professionals there is many times the normal as opposed to other places in the country.

    Illinois Transplant
We built a new house and moved to Henderson in June of this year and really like it. Lower taxes, lower crime, and better weather than Northern Illinois. Cheap flights for our friends to visit. More free buffets than we can possibly eat!

    Hot and dry
Thought about moving there after retirement, but it only took one trip in July to disabuse me of that notion.

If I move I'm afraid that girl will stop coming into my room and cleaning up after me. I think her name is maid.

Rented in Las Vegas in 2004 at beginning of housing
bubble. Loved Summerlin but home prices were skyrocketing. Moved about 100 miles south to Bullhead City, AZ just opposite Laughlin which is a lot like Downtown Las Vegas. Did not get financially crushed when housing bubble burst. We go to LV frequently, less than 2 hours to the Strip, but we prefer slower pace of life here.

    Another snowbird
We also split our year. Michigan for the beautiful summers there. Vegas for the mild winters. Love it.

    History says Yes!
Mom and Dad retired there and lived happily for 15 years until Dad passed away. Mom always found things outside of gambling for us to do and for our kids to enjoy. Dad always said that he saw his relatives more often in Vegas than when he lived in the same city. My bones don't ache and I love sunshine. There are many ways to still live inexpensively but very well.

    Californians
I wish the Californians wouldn’t come here. They’re ruining LAS Vegas. Please live in your own state.

  • JimBeam Dec-05-2018
    Wish salaries were higher
I have had a home in Las Vegas for more than 6 years now and love it. What I don’t love is the low salaries in Las Vegas. I find myself splitting time between Las Vegas and Dallas and working a job that pays me a salary that I’m accustomed to. Living full time in Las Vegas would require a 30% cut in pay. Having said that, Vegas is amazing and I live in a wonderful neighborhood. No matter what happens I will always have a place in Las Vegas.

    Ghastly medical care
I don't know WHY medical care in Vegas is so awful, given its large population of seniors and overall relative prosperity, but it truly sucks, in terms of quality, access, and cost. It's an aspect that visitors never see, but should certainly be considered by anyone contemplating a move there. Plus, the heat outside and the horrid smoke inside the casinos make the city an unhealthy environment.

I might have liked to live in the Las Vegas of about 1970 to 1990....
but not the current version. From my first visit as an adult in 1969, I often considered moving there, but always rejected the idea. Even then I realized that It was great for a few days, but then it got old quickly. Also, even then I sensed that it was slowly morphing into something that I might not like as much--which is exactly what happened. Crowds, traffic, rising prices, timeshare hawkers--but I'll skip the gruesome details.

We still go there now and then, for an occasional weekend and for the WSOP; but we avoid both downtown and the Strip. And now even our favorite off-strip properties are experiencing the deterioration, for example the recent revamping of the comp points policies at several off-strip houses. More and more we find ourselves in Laughlin, the Phoenix area casinos, or the California card rooms.

On the other hand, looking on the bright side, at least I didn't buy that timeshare.

    All of Nevada
I have been here for 12 years now and can truly say it's not just Las Vegas but all of Nevada that is the issue. Terrible medical care. Terrible social services. Terrible schools. I am a state employee and there is no loyalty at all, just partisan politics everywhere you look. If I did not have a pension and was not nearing my retirement age I would be leaving here sooner than I will. I would never retire here because the lack of adequate medical care would leave me dead in a couple of years. I have seen Vegas from different viewpoints and just do not like what I see. I owned a house here and had to short sell. The cost of living has increased quite a bit (I'm not from California so can't make that comparison, but that comparison is not fair anyway) and it's simply not a place I would ever consider raising a family. The old adage holds true for Vegas more than anywhere else I have ever traveled, "It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live (t)here".

    Snowbird
We live in Vegas 9 months out of the year and spend our summers in the Pacifc Northwest. We are never bored in Vegas always something to do.
Should have a check box above for snowbirds.

    Thinking of Carson Valley Instead
I love Las Vegas, but my wife can't handle the weather. We like the fact there isn't any state income tax and are looking into retiring in the Carson Valley.

    Enjoying Life
Las Vegas can be tough on new people that can't control their gambling and don't have family here. It is a very enjoyable place to live if you gamble very little, drink just a little and develop a family or social life. It also helps a great deal if you find a church you like that accepts you for who you are. If your life revolves around gambling you will eventually get tired of Vegas and it will spit you out.

    Live underground.
    I thought about it,at length.
I found NO "berm" houses for less that 350K.
    That would work,actually.
NO basements in the valley. I saw a lot of double-wides in out-lying cities and that would be OK,but I need to live like a desert rat, there. Think Coober Peedy.
65* all year round. A solar system and a well and maybe a large garage to work on my cars. Underground.
    .....I was ready!

    It works for us
We decided to move to Henderson, NV 5 years ago from the Chicago area and do not regret it. You have to put yourself out there and be active. Both my wife and I volunteer and have found very good friends that way. If you have an addictive personality then Vegas is not for you. You learn to adjust to the dryness, my nose used to bleed when we visited in the winter. It has not been a problem at all since we moved here. I do not mind the heat as it makes me feel better. Much lower cost of living and the entertainment options are what we came for. We enjoy living here but also understand it is not for everyone.
