Poll : 29 April - 12 May 2020

Q:

The most accessible gambling during the shutdown has been the lottery. Now, everyone knows what a bad bet the lottery is; the odds against hitting state jackpots are one in millions, while the odds in the big multi-state lotteries are one in the hundreds of millions. Still, the dream of instant riches (and the end to all financial worries) is strong and the question for our poll next week is, does that tempt you?

Knowing what a big edge the lottery has on ticket buyers, do you still play? Has your aversion to the lottery based on the odds changed during the pandemic? Has gambling math go out the window or have you held on to a previous attitude that the lottery is a colossal waste of money?

Thanks, as always, for voting and commenting in the boxes.

I sometimes purchase a ticket for Powerball or Mega Millions, but only if there’s a big rollover jackpot.
43% (221)
I always buy a ticket for at least one lottery, state and/or national - it’s an affordable cheap thrill for me and you just never know.
20% (102)
I play my state lottery, but not the huge national ones, as the chances of winning in that big of a field are just too remote to bother.
8% (42)
I'm not at all interested in the lottery and that's all I want to say about it.
8% (40)
Even if the lottery were the last gambling option in the world, I still wouldn't play.
7% (38)
I have never been, and will never be, tempted to play the lottery; it’s just too lousy of a bet for me to consider.
5% (28)
My state doesn't have a lottery and I’m not prepared to go to the trouble of crossing the state line to buy a ticket, so for me it’s simply not an option.
3% (16)
I play my state lottery, but not the huge national ones; I wouldn't mind winning a few million, but jackpots in the hundreds, or even tens, of millions scare me and I don't need all those money headaches.
3% (15)
I don’t play the lottery; I’ve read so many horror stories about a huge jackpot ruining someone’s life that I’d actually be afraid of the possible consequences if I won.
1% (6)
I never considered buying a ticket before the shutdown of most other forms of gambling, but I like having action, so I've bought some lottery tickets since.

Analysis

This wasn't our most popular poll ever, with slightly more than 500 votes.

But it shows that a plurality of respondents buy lottery tickets at one time or another. One out of five regularly plays the lottery, with another nearly one out of two getting caught up in the big multi-state jackpots that receive an enormous amount of publicity. Another 11% buy smaller state-lottery tickets for one reason or another.

The fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh vote-getters (23%) all tally up respondents who never play the lottery, whatever the reason.

Most interesting to us, though, is the number -- all of three -- who took up the lottery as a gambling option after the shutdown of the casinos and sports. We would have expected it to be higher.

    CA vs NV
When I lived in CA lottery tix were all over the place & I never played. Now I live in NV where you can't even buy tix. But when the prize money gets to be a ginormous amount, I go down to the booth in Primm on the CA border with a friend and wait in line for an hour (or so), then we go out for breakfast or lunch - it's kind of a thing. You need to bring some water, an umbrella for shade and maybe a pop-up chair then you're good to go :)

    Every once in a while
Back in my 20s, I worked in a place that sold lottery tickets in New Jersey. We used to have regulars who would buy $50 in Pick 3 tickets every day. One of them winning was rare. So I have known that the lottery wasn't a good gamble. But on occasion when the jackpot is extremely high, I have been known to buy A ticket. I look it as entertainment, I've spent $2 to think I have a chance of becoming a multi-millionaire.

    Lottery Player
Part of my trips to LAS is always to take "a drive in the desert" and get some CA Lottery tickets. I head down to the state line and buy some--won $3,000 once so it is a nice ride and sometimes profitable. However, when the jackpot is large I head for the Nipton exit and go to the General Store. Never had a line there--I don't understand why people wait for hours at the store on the state line! And, on the way back to LAS you can stop at Whiskey Pete's or the worlds largest Chevron station for sliders (it has a White Castle inside!)

    No scratch-offs?
In last weeks preview there were a few comments (including mine) about buying scratch-off tickets, whether it was for a gift or just a stab at a minor jackpot (you know, just like playing penny slots that don't have a big jackpot possibility). Yet, that is not a choice. Are we to assume that your Qpoll is only about large jackpot lotteries? Because many of us who come to gamble in Vegas never play for big jackpots there either. So...I did not choose any answer.

    Only "souvenir" tickets
I only buy a ticket when it's a really large jackpot, and that's usually just to keep as a souvenir of the moment, the way that a number of people at the Belmont Stakes will buy a $2 win ticket on the Derby & Preakness winner just to keep if the horse wins the Triple Crown. The only difference is, yes, I would cash the lottery ticket in if I won...

    Impulse Buyer
I buy scratch off tickets once-in-awhile on impulse or because I have singles in my hand at the grocery store or the gas station. I know it's like being hit by lightening and makes me feel like my college education was a total waste, but I do it anyway. Don't sick Dr. Phil on me or one of your Odds Experts! Mea Culpa!

    I love playing...
I always have a ticket for something. It is like a hobby for me and I have learned a lot about things like trusts and gift giving by doing research on issues that might come up if you win. This has actually come in handy doing our estate planning and dealing with our elderly parents. I play less of the big multi-state games now and more local games like cash 5 and the state lotto game. LOL, it is amazing how the older you get the less $$ you might need to make your dreams a reality.

    Preview
Why did you bother doing a preview if some of the options suggested weren’t used?

I buy the scratch off tickets, but only as gifts.

    but Pools!
On my own I hardly ever play, just the occasional state game. But I joined a lottery pool that only kicks in when a huge multi-state pot gets big enough. Otherwise I wouldn't consider Powerball or Mega with their terrible odds.

Years ago, I sometimes joined the lottery pool at work...
when the jackpot was very large; so it's not correct to say I've never played a state lottery. But that was years ago.
OTOH, if it gets high enough, I might be tempted again even today--but not so far.
