Poll : 12 June - 25 June 2019

Q:

As always, thank you all very much for the excellent feedback on this demographics poll.

As you'll see, many of the suggestions have been incorporated. The ones that weren't (from Ron Z., Dave, and Al, particularly) are beyond the scope of this particular survey and either have been covered in earlier polls or will be covered down the line. Here, we're interested solely in vital statistics.

As for the income questions, after much deliberation and discussion, we didn't delete them, while adding the "I prefer not to" choice. Answering those questions isn't required to complete the poll, of course; our polls are as anonymous as anything filled out online is possible to be (we don't data mine and have never sold our customer list), but at the same time are extremely helpful in establishing who our readers are for purposes of coupon procurement. And seeing how many of you do and don't answer the income questions is, actually, a poll-within-a-poll.

So have at it and keep those comments coming.

Analysis

As expected, our core demographic is a married 61- to 80-year-old out-of-town male making six figures a year.

Our typical reader hasn't changed, except for aging as we ourselves have (and making a little more money), since our first demographic study was sent out by mail in 1992, which some of you might remember.

We have our doubts that, even though this is the customer that the Strip casinos have traditionally coveted, the poll will assist in our efforts to acquire coupons from them. For their part, our readers are a little more knowledgeable than they like and for ours, though we do keep hitting them up, we have less and less incentive to send our subscribers to casinos that charge for parking, among other less than desirable policies.

But our top reader, plus our second most common -- 51-60 female -- will still make a positive impression on our existing coupon partners, so we highly appreciate all the participation in this poll.

A couple surprises: one respondent older than 91 and two younger than 21 (we'd've thought more elders and no under-agers).

Other interesting findings: 38 locals (a mere 1-plus percent) and 17 with second residences; five 21-30-year-olds (nice to see); and only 4% unwilling to answer the income question, as opposed to 13% willing.

Thanks to all respondents and here's hoping your participation translates directly into new and better coupons for 2020.

    why?
So, how is the income data used? They remind me how much of our hard earned income is taxed. Sometimes the gross fits one row, the net at least one back. Grrr.

Like the old tax form joke:
Line 1. How much did you make this year?
    Line 2. Send it in.

But I digress! Good job on the poll.

    income data
Candy et al., the income data allows the casinos to make better-informed decisions about whether or not they want our readers as customers when it comes time to grant us coupons for our Member Rewards Book.

    whatever would help
Thanks, deke. Put me down for a million plus. Ha, just kidding. Indeed I would have given mine had I known how it could help the cause. Can I email it to you, and you sneak it in? Like, subtract one "Prefer not to answer" and add one from the $$$ rows?

  • Deke Castleman Jun-12-2019
    Thanks Candy, but ...
Not really necessary to sneak in your income. I can see the poll results in real time and I'll give you a preview -- but you only! No one else, okay? With a few more than 1,000 votes, we've got nearly 100 at more than $75,000 (and 41 who prefer not to answer). So I'd say we're doing pretty well so far -- and the results definitely match similar polls from yesteryear.

    request
Next time you guys refer to a years-back poll you want to re-poll us on, can you give a link to that old one? I wanted to one that was mentioned recently. I searched the archives every which way, but my old eyes got older...and older...never found it. Thanks.

My wife and I spend 1 to 2 months in Vegas every year for the past 50 years and the coupon book is always a help to save and also spend more. keep up the good work.

    overlooked
I overlooked and didn't check "married." Sorry.

  • O2bnVegas Jun-25-2019
    List them in categories
Would be nice to view the results in categories together, e.g. genders, ages, household incomes, marital, etc., like in the poll. No worries, though. Good analysis!

    Deke the Sneak
The poll provided more info than you know. For example Deke sees each individual response so sees a married 21-30 employed male earning $25K-$50K, non local which gives him a female as well (or significant other). So the poll provided info that the results did not show.

    Percentages.
I am surprised by the 3.5-1 male to female ratio, and even more surprised that with 14% male and 4% female, 82% did not respond as either.

Am I reading this correct, or did you compute the percentages as a percentage of total responses, not respondents?

  • Sandra Ritter Jun-29-2019
    Wow
A few things surprised me by this poll. I'm in the largest age group right now but, although I feel young and sharp and am still full-time self employed, a year from tomorrow I fall into the 3rd largest age group (71-80, yikes!) and just knowing that makes me feel old :) Also I'm so surprised that of the 506 who answered on gender only 20.9% are female. I don't know why but I just assumed it would be closer to 50/50.

  • Ray Jun-30-2019
    % are deceptive
When you accumulate the answers, the percentages are very deceptive. For example, 394 men + 106 women (and 6 gender fluid) adds up to 500 or 506 actual responses, which to me implies 79% male, 21% female response. As far as income, the 101 non-responses of income then implies that 20% of the responders did not share their income, which could skew the results of that question.

  • Ray Jun-30-2019
    more on %
Also, as was already pointed out, a combination of age, gender, income, locality, etc. tells more than just each category individually. And, Sandra, I'm like you, except that I'm only 4 months away from moving up to the 71-80 category.

    Free Parking Coupon?
Maybe the strip casinos can give a coupon for free parking pass just to get your readers in the door.
