Poll : 27 November - 10 December 2020

Q:

Late last month, within a day of each other, Circa opened downtown and the Cromwell reopened on the Strip -- as adults-only properties. The under-21 crowd can go to Giadia on the second floor of the Cromwell and Barry’s Downtown Prime restaurant in the basement of Circa. That's it. They're not allowed anywhere else on the properties.

So we're wondering how y'all feel about this development, which is a first of its kind in the casino world (Bellagio banned strollers for a while 20 years ago, but had to rescind the policy in the face of the blowback).

We went with the multiple choices instead of just yes/no based on the comments in last week's poll preview -- for all of which, thank you very much.

You can vote for as many choices as you like.

Given their nature with gambling, drinking, and all the suggestions of sex, casinos are for adults, not kids.
26% (534)
Regardless of the justifications, I go to casinos to get away from a bunch of rugrats running around my feet. Let them go to Disney World.
18% (372)
Parenting is a full-time job. Casinos and parenting don't mix.
13% (281)
What's the matter with kids? I was one once. As long as they're supervised, they should be allowed wherever their parents go.
13% (274)
Circa and the Cromwell should be entirely under-21 free, not allowing them go anywhere on the properties.
8% (170)
A casino that prohibits children feels cooler and slicker.
8% (164)
Small adults-only casinos are fine, but there's no way a 4,000-room megaresort can stay in business without a family market.
6% (130)
At adults-only casinos, I don't have to worry about getting carded all the time at the bars and restaurants.
4% (80)
Banning kids from casinos will just make them long to go there more, setting up a possible unhealthy relationship later in their lives.
2% (50)
I like people watching in casino environments and children are naturally entertaining in their responses and playfulness.
0% (10)
Parents with kids can take them to child-friendly locals hotel-casinos, with play places, movies theaters, bowling alleys, video arcades, and the like.

Analysis

Obviously, LVAers believe, and strongly, that casinos and kids are mutually exclusive. We can't remember a poll that had such definitive agreement, especially one with this many responses.

Fully 90% of respondents voted for various ways of saying that kids should be kept out of casinos. Another 6% checked a box in favor of kids and casinos, but that was for an economic/logistic, rather than social, reason.

We thought that perhaps the psychological selection -- kids tend to want what they can't have -- would have garnered more of a response, but no. It's last on the list with only 10 votes, one of which was ours!

    Whatever
Vegas is a vacation destination. Eliminate kids altogether and you eliminate a large portion of their business.

    what's wrong?
Big mistakes like de-theming, family friendy, then just adult friendly, then just millenial friendly, and just whale friendly, paid parking, resort fees, etc. How many more mistakes will they make?. Las Vegas should try to be a place with something for every one, catter to the small spendera as well as the whale, making them feel like kings for the stay, welcoming the single adults as well as the familly oriented couple and making them feel welcome, incentivizing the wealthy as well as the midle class and making them feel special. at least that's what Vegas should be to me, a magical, special place for every one!

    No Kids!
Don’t like kids in Vegas! It’s the one place where you feel like you can go and get away from kids. A placed where you can be around other adults and not have kids crying and screaming in strollers. I don’t want to be in a fancy restaurant next to aaa table if kids. I have kids of my own but, I don’t want to take them to Vegas. Too much adults type things that kids should not be seeing. Take kids anywhere in the world but Vegas. Plenty of places to go. Leave Vegas an adult playground that it was always intended to be.

While I believe the information you have is valid, the July issue of Casino Player Magazine has a one page article about Circa. In it they picture a "Bunk bed suite" with 2 bunks back to back stating they are "Suitable for family-style vacations." I'm guessing CP may be wrong but check out page 14.

    Steak restaurants
Kids are already excluded from the casino floor, so I have no objection to people bringing kids to the resorts. I wonder what they do to keep them busy, but that’s their problem, not mine.

However, certain areas should be exclusive, like the steak house or other upscale restaurant. And that’s why I don’t get that those two restaurants are the only places kids CAN go.

    Adult Vegas ?
Some adult only casinos would be great in Vegas. Keep out the U21's. That would stop a lot of the current problems over the weekends at specific hotels. Allow the police to patrol the casino's where these bozzos would be allowed in. I do not have any issue with kids but if they have to come as part of a "family vacation" then they should be controlled by the parents and that means the resort should have specific areas to entertain them. (Excalibur for instance)

    Casino credit
Parents should be allowed to bring their children into casinos and sell them at the cage in exchange for free slot play. Then, Junior's college fund will be freed up for more action! Talk about a win-win!

    The little screamers
It is just wrong to bring babies and toddlers and any kid who cannot modulate their own oral output, i.e. screaming, crying, whining into a "nice" eatery, especially in Las Vegas.

Realizing folks' definition of "nice" will be broad, so I always lose this argument when it comes to Chili's, TGI Fridays, any place that serves cocktails. I also realize that parents with a new baby (or three) probably get cabin fever pretty quickly and need a break. In that case, hire a sitter.

    I get it.
If the teenagers and above are with their parents, doing nothing wrong, no problem. However, I can see the casinos side and legal issues if young adults are acting like gangsters without supervision (and who cant be prosecuted due to their age) while alienating the gamblers. I wonder how strict the requirement will be followed or if their will be an "unofficial" policy.

    SMOKE!
I don't object to a lot of things, but I do have a problem with smoke. I have COPD mostly because my parents both smoked heavily all my life.I tried it for 2 or 3 years, but didn't like it. Now I go into Casinos WITHOUT my M.D.'s permission. and have to drag oxygen over my shoulder and that's a pain. I think smoke is worse for kids than drinking, gambling and sex all put together.
