Poll : 14 August - 20 August 2019

Q:

In Eating Las Vegas 2019, John Curtas writes, "Next to the Big Apple, no city on Earth has better steakhouses than Sin City. And on any given night, I’ll put our chef-driven joints up against anything New York City can throw at us."

And he was referring, mostly, to quality. Quantity-wise, Las Vegas surely is near, if not at, the top of the list for the sheer number of them (at least 75), as evidenced by this poll.

You can vote for as many steakhouses as you like, but here we're concerned with good value. As mentioned last week in the poll preview, quality of the food, ambience/view, wine list, and service are certainly considerations, but value combines all other criteria with price. We're not just looking for the best steak and sides; we're looking for them at the lowest price that doesn't compromise quality. And as always, we'd love to hear why you think so.

Also as always, thanks in advance for your votes and comments.

Analysis

Is anyone surprised that Ellis Island and its inveterate steak special tops the list of the best steakhouses in Las Vegas? We're not, even though the EI Cafe isn't exactly a steakhouse. But this 10-ounce filet-cut top sirloin, complete with potato or rice, garlic green beans, and soup or salad, has been the best steak deal in town for so long that steak and this special are practically synonymous.

The rest of the top-six vote getters are similarly predictable. The best thing about Circus Circus since anyone can remember is the Steakhouse that, along with the Top of Binion's, Hugo's Cellar, Andiamo, and the Golden Steer are throwbacks to the bygone years when these kinds of places were the closest Las Vegas got to gourmet dining.

Beyond those, Ruth's Chris and Outback are national brands, Oscar's Steakhouse occupies the great room that overlooks the Fremont Street Experience (and used to be called Centerstage), and Redwood Steakhouse at the California is another of the throwbacks (though it was upgraded and updated in 2017).

As for the rest of the selections, take your pick! So many are so good that you simply can't go wrong, which is why the bottom 58 restaurants are all separated by a mere eight votes!

Binon's and The Steakhouse at Circus Circus
With its excellent quality, good views, nice atmosphere, PLUS the LVA MRB 25% off coupon, Binion's is difficult to beat. It is my "go to" place when I take people for a good steak dinner. Excellent steaks and rack of lamb and the sides are included with the meal NOT A La Cart, like some other Steak Houses.

A good second choice it The Steakhouse at Circus Circus. Once you get inside the steakhouse it is a completely different world from the casino. Again good food, reasonable prices, only problem I had was that the tables are close together so it can get a little noisy, depending on how crowded it is.

    Steaks
We obviously haven't enjoyed all these choices, but we do like to take advantage of the wide variety of choices in LV, and don't mind splurging for a high end dinner. At the low end, our fave is Ellis Island. While it isn't the greatest cut of meat, it's always well seasoned and cooked to our specs (medium/medium rare), with a decent salad and 2 sides for a ridiculously low price. However, one of my all-time favorite steak dinners was at Michael Mina's STRIPSTEAK. It was not inexpensive, but the overall experience was worth the price. It's a pretty restaurant visually very warm and inviting, everyone was extremely hospitable, the food was delicious, I don't know if they still do this, but they brought duck fat fries for us gratis; the scotch pours were generous; an extra plate of bite-size sweets came with our bill. We walked out of there in a very good mood. Now that I think about it, I may just make a reservation for our trip in November!
