Poll : 09 January - 22 January 2025

Q:

Reader Poll: What would you bring back from the bygone days?

Our first poll in half a year is a good one and the poll preview generated an enormous response. Obviously, we all miss the good old days and it's fun and instructive to reminisce and commiserate about all the things that Las Vegas no longer offers.

We've compiled the original suggestions from the QoD submitter, our own selections, and all of your comments from the preview to come up with a list of nearly 75 choices (alphabetized). You can, of course, vote for as many as you like.

We'll run the results two weeks from today.

Analysis

Thank you so much for voting! It's quite satisfying to see 5,000 votes for the poll.

As elucidated in the Question of the Day that links to this page, the top 10 vote getters are all casino benefits that have been taken away incrementally, to use a favorite word of casino-industry analysts for boiling a frog slowly. Luckily for the joints, we old-timers are becoming more and more passé and the current crop of suckers either weren't around for the good old days, have very short memories, or simply expect to pay whatever the freight is for a Vegas vacation.

Another idea is that they do remember when all these benefits were readily available, but continue to try to make the best of a depreciated situation. We count ourselves among this group. We still put out a list of Top 10 Values every month. We still find, try, and review the best deals in town, which are still available. And we still receive feedback from all the frugal and value-conscious visitors in our community. As long as we're here, we expect that never to change.

On a personal note, we're especially happy to see the number of votes for the people who, for one reason or another, are no longer among us: Brad Scott, Arnold Snyder, and Jessica Roe. We miss them the most.

    Bygone days
I nominated 24-hour cafes (which didn't make the list). I'd say that's what I miss the most. [Thanks for noticing, Candy].

Bring back Westward Ho. It reminded me of downtown Vegas on the strip.

  • Tim Seivers Jan-16-2025
    Corporate greed
Don't go to Vegas anymore because of the added fees that you now have to pay, parking, resort. In addition as a blackjack player they have taken the fun out of playing with their high table minimums, automatic shuffling machines, 6-5 blackjack payouts at all of the strip casinos. I'm a $10 to $15 table minimum player to make my gambling budget stretch. Will go to my local casinos that have those lower minimums.

    Imperial Palace car collection
Laughlin and Reno still have car collections but the IP's was the best. They once had a room full of Duesenbergs, wow!

  • Sandra Ritter Jan-16-2025
    Jessica Roe
In checking QoD Mother Jessica Roe, this doesn't mean I want the current QoD Father to be replaced. I had several communications with Jessica and miss her, but she could come back with a different task so we are blessed with both :)

    Agree…
    …about the 24 hour cafes.

  • Raymond Jan-16-2025

Of all cities in the world to largely shut down the 24 hour cafe, what the what?!?

  • Sheryl Hanna Jan-16-2025
    Too Casual
Loved when people used to dress up in vegas

  • O2bnVegas Jan-16-2025
    Add 24 hour cafes, pleae
There were at least six or seven nominations (including mine) for 24 hour cafes, but were omitted from the ballot.

I agree with John Foisy, this is one I miss the most, where you could get a reasonably priced breakfast or sandwich or other entree, coffee or soda (and a grown up beverage) any hour of the day or night. And along with my vote for Keno, many of those had the Keno board and runners, at least during the daytime. Thanks.

    The Ho
Loved Westward Ho, especially the snack bar. I would visit it almost every trip.

  • rodfan Jan-16-2025
    I miss…
I voted for free parking. But we also miss the Aladdin. There was an escalator that went up (not there since PH took over) where there was free live music entertainment, all the while playing video poker and getting comped drinks!

    Cigarettes? NO!!
I wish that "Free cigarettes" wasn't on the list, because cigarette smoke is one of those things that made Vegas casinos in the past be a somewhat negative experience. In casinos or elsewhere, cigarette smoke is a pollutant that directly interferes with my ability to breathe (and other people's too), that can cause or contribute to cardiac and/or respiratory ailments/diseases (in many cases causing death), and that stinks up your clothing and other items. I always had to wash my clothes after returning home from a Vegas trip because of the stench from cigarette smoke. Now in 2025, that is no longer true, because the rate of smoking has dropped a lot over the last couple of decades. Free cigarettes would just tend to get people to smoke more, not less, and I don't want that. So this perk from the past is one thing that we should not miss and thus want back; rather, we should hope for anything legal and reasonable that tends to eliminate cigarette smoke from casinos as much as possible.

    Common sense.
How about common sense visitors who were smart enough to quit feeding the new corporate greed machines.

  • Marty Fitzgerald Jan-17-2025

    Meant Binion's Horseshoe

    Important
Resort fees and $5 table limits should be the highest priorities. Las Vegas has almost run the lower level players off. Even when you get a comped room, it costs you $50+ a night because of the resort fees. If you enjoy playing some of the card games like my husband does, it cuts into your gambling budge pretty good when you have to pay more than $5 a hand. I realize they have to make money, but it's gotten ridiculous. Now they are just being greedy.

  • Patrick Kiernan Jan-25-2025

    NEW TO VEGAS
How about a poll on something new to Vegas that hasn't been done before (or at least to any great extent). Smoke-free casinos would be the biggest. I'm sure there are others. I know big casinos don't care, but might be a blip on their radar at the very least. They could start with some decent-sized free smoking areas if they didn't want to go totally smokeless. Seems like they don't even want to try where smoking is concerned. Latest info I saw says only 14% of the U.S. smokes. They must all frequent Las Vegas. I would guess a much bigger percentage of high rollers smoke but they get their own rooms anyway, don't they?

    Missing Jean Scott
I'm not "gone." Still writing and visiting casinos, just not as often. But I will be in Vegas in March!!
