Poll : 07 September - 20 September 2022

Q:

Okay, gang, here's the first-timer restaurant poll.

As pointed out by Al in the comments on the poll preview last week, we needed to differentiate between restaurants that you like and those that impart a true Vegas experience, so a lot of the suggestions based on the former fell by the wayside. It wasn't easy; we eat frequently at Dona Maria's, for example, but we don't believe there's anything quintessentially Vegas about it. And we adore Border Grill, going there on numerous special occasions, but can do the same in downtown L.A. (and at food trucks around that city).

We altered Ray's suggestion on including price ranges by arranging the choices in price order from lowest to highest, except for the Circus Circus buffet; we couldn't resist salukidean’s suggestion of putting Circus Circus buffet first, after which everything will be an improvement (ha ha!).

You can vote for as many as you like and let us know in the comment boxes if we missed any obvious places or you'd like to comment on the ones we included. The selections with asterisks were also on EaterVegas's list that inspired ours.

Analysis

We registered our approval of the Peppermill at number-one in the QoD with the link to these results, but we're extremely gratified to see Ellis Island at number two. Fancy it ain't, but you won't find better bargains and bigger portions anywhere in town, except perhaps at Emerald Island, which came in near the bottom, but still made the cut. Of course, it's the difference between one block and 25 miles from the Strip, but when it comes to first-timers availing themselves of iconic Las Vegas dining experiences, they'd do a lot worse than taking the advice of the greatest collection of experts on the subject that exists anywhere -- and hitting both Ellis and Emerald Islands.

We've had, we must admit, some reports of Hugo's Cellar having gone downhill since the shutdown, though it too, if it's anything like it used to be, is a classic Vegas affair -- along with Battista's.

Buffets are still the primary Vegas symbol of excess, though the $50 or so you'll spend for the prime rib dinner for two at South Point (with a players card discount) is just as emblematic as the Bacchanal at three times that price.

Beyond those are the views from the STRAT and Binion's, which can't be beat, the archetypal 62-year-old Golden Steer steakhouse, of course the hot dog at the sports book at South Point, and Lotus of Siam, considered by many the best Thai restaurant in the U.S.

These and the rest of the choices on the list will keep first-time visitors busy with classic Vegas dining experiences for their second, third, fourth, and even fifth trips here -- all thanks to you.

    Skip
I've never eaten at any of these places, so I'll just have to skip this one.

How about Mon Ami Gabi and Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris?
Oscar's Steakhouse at the Plaza. Vic & Anthony's at the Golden Nugget.

    Recommended Restaurant
Try the recently reopened buffet at The Palms called A.Y.C.E. Wednesday night is AYCE lobster, Thursday is crab, Friday Prime Rib. The long lines and waiting times denote the popularity and success. Get on line early.

    "True" Vegas eating experience
Everyone obviously has their own preferences for how they "do" Vegas. I would have liked to see EAT included, especially because it's a downtown restaurant and privately owned. We make sure to visit there at least once during a trip, and when friends travel with us, it's a must-do. As an aside, my husband swears there's a portal to another dimension nearby, because the people watching is out of this world. As for the list above, we've only eaten in a handful of them. The Golden Steer is unique in its throwback style with good food and service. We've enjoyed the Bacchanal Buffet a couple of times, but only when there were coupons in the MRB, or we had comp $$. The buffets at the Cosmo or at Wynn are equally high class IMHO. Finally, agree with the classic Peppermill which is our final meal on the day we leave Vegas.

    Magnolia's
I still think Magnolia's is a great, old-fashioned Vegas place to eat --specials, overlooking casino, friendly staff, good food.

Agree with Diane Crosby. Magnolia's is a go to downtown. Their raspberry salad and prime rib special are on repeat orders for me. Favorites are Hugo's Cellar and Top of Binion's Steakhouse.

    What?
I have to echo some others. I cannot believe Mon Ami Gabi’s was left off. It was mentioned in the preview. I thought it would be a top choice. I always take guests there for our first meal in Vegas so they can take it all in. The results are already tainted.

    Picasso?
I suppose the intent was to list eateries that didn't exists anywhere else. Picasso is unique, but also mega expensive. I wouldn't have thought of it as a 'can't miss' for a first timer, unless they are aware of what it could do to their budget.

In fact, I've not eaten at most on the list. But glad for the suggestions anyway.

    wrong buffet
I tried South Point buffet once, never again. Bland, no style, no atmosphere, crowded. We do Garden Court buffet at Main St Station multiple times per trip, every trip. Beautiful, spread not as extensive as pre-pandemic, but still nice. Servers are also nice.

Why no Marylyn's in the Tuscany Hotel/Casino...great food. Great honest pricing. Awesome portions...

    Restaurant Poll
I agree with Reno Faoro about Bootleggers. It gives that old Vegas mob feeling. The Top of Binion's Steakhouse was very good, particularly when using the 25% off the entire bill, including drinks, coupon from the MRB.

    Sal Rinaldo
Big Al's Oyster Bar at Orleans,The Steak House Circus Circus
Ping Pang Pong Gold Coast and on the list Battista's,Peppermill,Luv it Custard

    Circus Circus Buffet
Perhaps we shouldn't be TOO hard on the Circus Circus buffet. There's a New Testament verse in which the apostle Paul, talking about doing something bad to his physical self for spiritual reasons, says "I buffet my body daily". Maybe he meant the Circus Circus buffet.

    El Cortez
Gourmet restaurant Roberta's at the El Cortez, which was around at least from the 1960's, would've been a nice choice for an "Old Vegas" restaurant, but unfortunately it is long-gone. The restaurant that currently occupies its space, Siegel's 1941, has its logo dolled-up like an old-time place, but the place itself is just an all-purpose eatery, no historic vibes. However, I would still tell visitors to make a visit to the El Cortez because its marquee and overhead signs are the originals, going back to 1941, and the corridors to and from the "nickel room" gambling area contain lots of photos of Old Vegas on the walls. Every time I stay there, I make sure that I walk those aisles and spend time looking at those photos. Some of these photos also line part of the wall between the front desk and the tower elevators, and part of the wall between the cashier and the south parking elevator.

    The basic coffee shop
The basic coffee shop is quintessential Las Vegas. But there are not many left, these days. That, and the bargain priced steak house, which are all but gone, too.

    Southpoint buffet
While maybe not everyone's cup of tea, it's nice to have a breakfast buffet on the way back to San Diego. Used to stop at Nevada Landing but we all know what happened there.

  • Jahnke Sep-18-2022
    Old steakhouse vibe
I would include The Steakhouse at Circus Circus. The decor is from an earlier time in Las Vegas and so is the music they play. The food, service, and atmosphere is wonderful, I might add.

    Downtown Coffee Shop
The coffee shop at the place across from Main Street Station (I forget the name) Has specials in the evening of Hawaiian soups or stews. Much better than I ever expected.

    Hugo’s Cellar Quality
Four Quuens has been our go to casino for almost fifteen years due to their good video poker and generous comps. Over that time, and as recently as last week, we have eaten countless meals at Hugo’s. The only change I’ve seen over that time is a sight reduction in the portion of the table side salad service. Which actually good for us, because it means we can finish our steaks. Perhaps your reporters caught them on a bad night, but we can say our experience at Hugo’s has been uniformly excellent over the time we have been going there.

    Coronado Cafe
Specials, late night, and counter service are classic Vegas.

  • Michael Taylor Sep-23-2022
    Michael's
Best restaurant is Michael's at South Point. Great food, service and old Vegas feel and atmosphere. Expensive and down the strip a ways but worth it. The casino is also good with low table minimums & drinks and dealers that are actually fun to play with

    Fine Dining
How about a poll on the best fine-dining restaurants like Michael Mina, Nobu etc?

  • dblund Sep-23-2022
    Thanks, but...
While I really do appreciate the idea and effort, I have to disagree with Al and your editing the list. As illustrated by the many comments, defining the 'Vegas Experience' for others is difficult, if at all possible. I wish you had simply gone with the longer list and let the votes fall where they may, but for now I do say Thanks!, and between the provided poll and all the comments I now have several additional places to visit to expand my Vegas Experience.

    Peppermill
