Poll : 02 September - 15 September 2020

Q:

Given the continuing reluctance to travel on the part of many people during the pandemic, as well as the reluctance on the part of most casinos to discount or eliminate resort fees and the potential for crowds in various places around big hotels, we wonder if private home-share rentals might be more attractive to those who really want or need to travel these days.

We ran this poll two and a half years ago; you can see the results here. We're curious whether or not two-plus years, combined with the radically changed world, has altered the perspective of the more than 60% of participants who hadn't stayed in a home-share or hadn't even heard of it way back in early 2018.

You can select as many choices as you like and we always appreciate comments, as do your fellow participants. And thanks to all who helped improve this poll last week on poll-preview day.

This is a dumb poll.

Prior to this poll I'd never heard of home-sharing.
3% (27)
I'm a local and this poll doesn't apply to me.

2% (18)
More likely. I've stayed in a home-share and prefer it to hotels, pandemic or not.
2% (15)
Less likely. I've stayed in home-shares, but I had a bad experience, so I won't reconsider it.

Analysis

We ran a similar poll in January 2018 and interestingly, attitudes don't seem to have changed much in the past two and a half years.

Whereas in the earlier survey, 40% of respondents voted for the choice of "I haven't stayed in a timeshare and I'm not considering it," while in this poll, it was only 21%.

However, if you add up the top five vote-getters, all "less likelies," it's an overwhelmingly negative response (83% don't like the idea for various reasons).

One notable difference is the 9% of people who'd never heard of home-shares in 2018, compared to 3% in 2020.

All in all, it's clear that our readers aren't inclined to stay in private residences in the hotel-room capital of the world.

Finally, we suppose we could include a "This is a dumb poll" choice in every survey we conduct, but since someone suggested it in the poll preview for this one, we popped it in there at the end. Obviously, placing sixth out of 12 choices, it hit home with more than a few respondents. Anyone reading this who cares to suggest the same for any upcoming polls, we'll consider it.

    DUMB !
SOMEONE HAS WAY WAY TOO MUCH SPARE TIME...I WILL SAY, STAYING IN A HOUSE GIVES YOU THE THRILL OF BEING GOUGED BY A RENT-A-CAR COMPANY...

    Not voting
I didn't vote as there isn't an option for me. I'm not more or less inclined to stay in either. I typically don't stay at a house unless it's with a friend that owns it, and I typically don't stay at hotels either. This is specifically for Vegas, I stay at my timeshares when there. I actually do have a hotel booked for my trip next week, but just to get on the balcony at Cosmo and watch the Bellagio fountain. I'm staying across the street at Elara. I figure even though the hotel room is comped, I prefer a full kitchen and blackout screens on the windows.

    Not likely
I think staying at the Resort you like is part of the experience, shure there are a lot of things to take into acount, lique sanitization, but, it's the same issue at rental houses, is it realy sanitized?, is it realy clean?. You can say that you have kitchen and other house ammenities but, part of the vegas experience is dining out, and there are enough places for all budgets, so, why experience vegas as if you're in your house. I'm against parking fees, I'm against resort fees (illegal), I'm against de-theming of resorts, but still there are places for everybody, even if I'm not staying at Cesars or MGM places for those reasons, there is still Coast casinos, Station Casinos, and there is still mr. >Michael Gaugan's place (one of my favorite guys in vegas), The South Point. So there are a lot of experiences you miss if you rent a house, and don't forget they are not as innexpensive as they seem, There is nothing like the full resort experience, even in Locals Places.

    Can't really answer
Actually equally likely if you consider any travel stays. Maybe less likely in Vegas, but none of the "less likely" answers fit, and more likely in other locations. The reason in Vegas is location, being closer to most of the places we like to go, and being able to go down to the casino any time without driving

    Bankroll
I would never stay at home share while I have a gambling bankroll. And since most of my vacations involve a casino, I doubt I’ll ever stay at a home share.

    recent trips
We went to Las Vegas in July and again in August. I'm older and "at risk". With dividers at the tables and every other machine turned off, and this combined with the reduced crowd sizes (10-25%) we felt safe. First trip to Bellagio and second trip to NYNY with side trips to Green Valley Ranch and MGM.

    Only a moron...
...would consider going to Vegas right now. The halfhearted measures put in place by the casinos have virtually no effect on infection danger--particularly since more than half of the customers ignore or evade the simplest of restrictions, such as WEAR A %^%#$ MASK. Plus, just like before, everybody smokes, so you still have ample opportunity to inhale pathogenic clouds. No thanks!!

Parenthetically, if you stayed in a house, how would you know that it's been properly disinfected? The simple solution: stay home. Deal with it. Stop whining. Amuse yourself in isolation. You'll save money and go on living.

Never heard of this until now, but I'm not interested in staying with anyone. I will pay the resort fees, because if they didn't have them, the hotels would just bump up their room rates anyways - and you'll still pay per night what you are paying now.
