Poll : 31 March - 13 April 2021

Q:

As noted in the preview last week, this poll was suggested by Steve W., who was inspired by a comment about the Buccaneer Bay Club -- and the detheming of Treasure Island -- to the recent QoD about the pirate restaurant in the movie Leaving Las Vegas

Steve writes, "What was/is/will be the biggest nail in Las Vegas' coffin? De-mobbing, de-theming, family friendly, bottle service, reduced blackjack, video poker, etc. odds, resort/parking/anything-they-can-think-of-and-more fees, online gambling and sports betting, every state having casinos, zero buffets? And what else? All the gripes in one place!"

And boy oh boy, do you have gripes! Our list, which was already pretty inclusive, got a lot longer with suggestions from the preview. It's alphabetized, which might help in wading through the 40 choices.

Have at it! Choose as many as you like and comments always welcome.

Analysis

Resort fees are the most despised weapon in Las Vegas' hotel-casino money-sucking arsenal. No surprise there.

Meanwhile, the rest of the top five potential nails in Sin City's coffin are also symptoms of the Gouge Syndrome.

Crime, of course, has been a major problem since the reopening of the casinos last June, but nine of the top ten nails can be summed up by the seventh highest vote-getter: corporate greed.

It all, of course, adds up to a growing sentiment, especially among customers who remember the good old days, that "it just ain't Vegas anymore."

It's also highly interesting to us that 28 out of the other 28 reasons don't have to do with the Gouge. And if that's not indicative of the prevailing sentiment of the Vegasphiles who frequent LVA.com and participate in our polls -- to say nothing of more than 6,000 votes for this one -- we don't know what is.

    As many as I like
    but only one.
It only allows you to select one.

  • Edso Mar-31-2021
    Only one also
I could only vote for one as well. Oh well.

    Like Henry Ford's car colors
Didn't Henry Ford say you could choose any color of his cars you liked, as long as it was black? LOL. I'm sure this will be fixed soon.

BTW, my suggestion wasn't accepted, and I thought it was a good one. Oh, well.

    choice
There are too many choices to have to pick only one.

    Only one choice
If only one - the thrill is gone, because of tightening odds, resort fees, failure to ban smoking, nickel and diming, parking fees, fear of Covid, etc.

    They're using radio buttons
Where they should be using little boxes to check off your choices. That way you would be able to select more than one choice.

  • Deke Castleman Mar-31-2021
    Multiple choice
Sorry about the one-choice-only situation. There's a toggle, Allow Multiple Choices, in the poll setup. That has to be enabled; a single choice is the default. Multiple choices wasn't enabled, but now they are.

    Kevin Lewis
I had no idea who Kevin Lewis was before today and, even after a quick Google search, I'm still a bit confused on how whichever "Kevin Lewis Las Vegas" hit I clicked on, he could be the final nail in Las Vegas' coffin.

Oh - and the radio buttons are now check boxes - feel free to click on as many selections as you wish - including Kevin Lewis.

  • Kevin Lewis Mar-31-2021
I'm doomed, and it's your fault
Do you realize that by including me as a possible reason for the demise of Vegas, you've made me the target of multiple professional hit men? The casinos are well funded; any fees could be recorded under "miscellaneous expenses."

I really like that inside joke in the ‘K’ section. 🤪

I could have check almost all of the boxes but my biggest beef is with the resort fees. Just plain gouging. Plus it isn't the same Vegas as it was even 20 years ago.

  • Ray Mar-31-2021
    Just a couple
Most of the choices existed before the pandemic and the Vegas "coffin" was still wide open. As much bitching about resort fees, parking fees, etc. hasn't seemed to have even added a piece of tape,, let alone a nail. In the long run, the only things that might diminish the ability for Vegas to reclaim its customers is the proliferation of gambling choices, both in more states and competition from those states, and on-line gambling choices. In particular, sports betting, which Vegas had a monopoly on until New Jersey won its lawsuit. Now at least a dozen states are doing many millions of dollars in betting each month. March Madness and Super Bowl week have many more choices than a trip to Vegas.

I didn't see a choice for lack of conventions, either. I think that if the conventions don't return (for many reasons) that also puts a dent in rooms filled and all else that goes with it. And Kevin, you are an ambassador for the city. All the jabs you stick in make people want to come out and see what you're talking about. You should rent yourself out. "An evening with Kevin Lewis. Let me show you what I'm talking about"

    It all ties together
The corporations looking at today's bottom line only take more and more fun from low rollers, slowly killing the golden goose. They don't have the vision to see what built the town. Further, I do blame them for the de-theming, all going with the current chic look and feel, and no individual flavor. So we've lost much of the fun of bouncing around from place to place, and they all look like the casino back home. Why travel when there isn't the unique experience? It all tracks back to the corporate lack of imagination and the low tolerance for risk that is giving LV the blahs. This is what made Circa so disappointing. If your biggest feature is a massive (and impressive) sports book, why not ride the theme?

Kevin Lewis and I are kindred spirits...
We've both witnessed the long-term erosion and decline of Las Vegas from a fun place to go, into something that's hard even to recognize any more.
In the words of professor Sam Kinison in "Back to School" (1986): "I like the way you [Kevin] think."
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9DO26O6dIg at about 2:16
Of course, Kevin's more like Kinison and I'm more like Rodney Dangerfield. At least in general appearance.

    Safety
For me it's the safety, because the rates are low, LV is attracting a bad element. I usually travel alone, and I'm afraid to go anywhere after dark. Tightening of the odds makes me more likely to play at home rather than travel. AND one you forgot: There is no Seven Star line to reward the best players at CET properties. Why bother? I will not stand in line for 30 minutes for coffee!!!

  • Raymond Jessen Apr-07-2021
    Tipping Point
The cause of the decline of LV is multiple examples of greed. When they got away with resort fees, why not charge for parking, decrease odds, etc. Finally they reached for me a tipping point. It is difficult to recover once you have passed the greed threshold.

At Least You Got to Choose One
When I opened the poll, my choice was made for me--Comp Cutbacks. And it was the only choice.

Actually that would have been one of my choices anyway...

    Not-so-great Poll
I think people are confusing the purpose of the poll (what could be the end of Las Vegas) versus just using it as a way to bitch & moan. The reality is that resort fees will NOT kill Las Vegas and I can say this with 100% certainty. How do I know this? Because they're working. Resort fees are far from new, they've been around for, what, 15 years? Maybe more? In 15 years how many trips have you cancelled directly because of resort fees? Guess what, Las Vegas is still here.

  • Ray Apr-17-2021
    Jim Beam says it
It's mostly a forum to complain, but the top choices ARE things that existed well before the pandemic downturn. And Vegas still prospered. And any time you have a poll that allows multiple answers, you don't really have 6000 responses, because s-o-o-o many people voted for many items. I'd bet that most of the people that voted for any of the top 5 voted for many if not all of the top 5. Also, having 40 choices increases the tendency to vote for many choices, which also inflates the "number of votes". This poll tells us nothing about the demise of Vegas, just a laundry list of people's bitches.

    IF resorts were smart...
They would take this poll and do away/fix at least the top 3-5 “ winners” of this poll.
