Poll : 23 June - 06 July 2021

Q:

It's been a little more than two years since we went to the new alignment between Question of the Day and the LVA polls. Prior to that, we dedicated six QoDs per month to the polls: two previews, two polls themselves, and two results. Based on your feedback from the poll in April 2019, we revised that schedule to dedicating only two Questions of the Day per month to poll previews; the polls themselves are linked to regular QoDs.

So we're checking in on the latest sentiments about the poll previews and polls.

Thanks for all the good feedback on the poll preview, as always, especially dblund for all the possible choices. We've incorporated most of the suggestions in the choices below. And if you like, you can comment further. But you can vote for only one choice.

A:
380 Total Votes
I prefer the current system of links to the two polls and poll results per month at the end of QoDs on their own subjects.
29% (109)
I'd prefer an occasional poll on no set schedule, perhaps only when a QoD warrants one.
23% (88)
I would rather do away with the poll previews.
16% (60)
I would like to return to two QoDs per month dedicated entirely to the polls.
8% (31)
I would prefer to keep the poll previews.
8% (31)
I would like two QoDs per month dedicated entirely to the poll results.
6% (23)
I would like to see one poll per month.
6% (23)
I vote for no polls; they mean nothing to me and I never participate.
4% (15)

Analysis

It was a pretty close vote between the poll status quo and a new regime of an occasional poll when a subject warrants one. And although the status quo took the slight early lead and remained there till the end, we ourselves voted for the no-set-schedule choice.

The truth is, polls are getting harder and harder not only to originate and formulate, but participation has been shrinking for a long time. Indeed, 380 votes on this poll poll provides ample evidence of that.

Other factors are involved, but they're mostly internal and need not be detailed here; just take our word for them.

So without further ado, the decision is an occasional poll on no set schedule. Those few of you who know how to find these words and are reading them, you're now aware of the upshot. Some of the rest will no doubt notice that the Vegas News column has been extended to fill the home-page space that had been dedicated to the poll. And everyone else will remain blissfully ignorant and good for them.

I wouldn’t care if the polls were more frequent or less frequent, or if the frequency of poll previews changed.

All I suggest, is what I suggested in the preview: that the links be made more prominent, in a box of their own, just above the top of the QOD question.

I maya be missing something, but I see the poll previews, but never see the results. Where are they posted?

Ask not for whom the bell polls
My preference is that LVA conducts a QoD poll whenever the urge strikes them.

Most are...what good do they accomplish? Polls for years say "NO SMOKING IN CASINOS" and what have those polls accomplished...

    status quo
I chose "keep the previews". There is much value to getting the lay of the land and being able to tinker with the poll before officially asking for answers. As much as I get frustrated by people actually answering the poll instead of offering something in the way of adjusting the poll. Quite often, allowing multiple choices just skews the results and renders the percentages that you post in the results less meaningful. So, do I think there can be improvement in the polls? Yes, but that is a question that can be asked another time.

    For Daryl or Bruce?
To get to Poll results, click "Search the Archives", upper right hand corner above the voting options. You'll see previous poll questions in purple (my screen, anyway). Click in the purple and you'll see that poll as written, the analysis, voting results, etc.

Like you, for a long time I never saw the results, didn't know where to find them. Play around with it in the Archives. Good luck.

    Poll structure
What Ray said. Ray and I are two of the few who actually attempt to help improve the STRUCTURE of the polls instead of sounding off our opinions in the preview phase. LVA staff who compose the poll are to be thanked, because, like writing a theme or book or song, starting a thing is the hardest part.

Having said that, perhaps there can be 'pearls' in the sound-offs that can be picked out to improve the final poll. Everyone deserves a voice.
