Poll : 30 October - 12 November 2019

Q:

As Anthony Curtis wrote in the October issue of the Las Vegas Advisor, "Who's next?"

He was referring to a potential domino effect from the Wynn returning to all free all the time at all its parking venues. The first domino to fall was another Wynn property, Encore Boston Harbor, where the fees were quite high ($24 for the first six hours and $42 for 24 hours). But the question we're addressing in this new poll is whether or not you predict that the Wynn move will have any impact on MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, or Cosmopolitan when it comes to their paid-parking policies.

Thanks for participating.

Not only won't the Wynn's rescission of paid parking lead to Cosmo, Caesars, and MGM altering their parking policies for the better, but one or more will slowly but steadily raise the prices of paid parking.
29% (165)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will itself be rescinded; the Wynn will eventually reinstate its parking fees, which will rise to the competitions' over time.
26% (148)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will lead to Cosmo, Caesars, and MGM going back to all free parking, but only when a deflationary depression reduces the number of visitors to Las Vegas by, say, 25% or more.
14% (78)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will lead to Cosmo, Caesars, and MGM going back to all free parking, but only when the cows finally, and ultimately, do come home.
10% (60)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will lead to the Cosmopolitan going back to free parking.
5% (29)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will lead to Cosmo, Caesars, and MGM going back to all free parking.
5% (26)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will lead to the Caesars Entertainment going back to free parking at all of its properties.
4% (23)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will lead to the Caesars Entertainment going back to free parking at some of its Strip properties.
4% (22)
The Wynn's rescission of paid parking will lead to the MGM Resorts International going back to free parking at all of its Strip properties.

Analysis

Not the most exciting poll we've ever conducted, it received less than 600 votes, but the results are still indicative of the general sentiment about paid parking: The cost to park on the Strip will slowly but inevitably rise, including a reinstatement of the fees at the Wynn (perhaps after all the fallout from the Steve Wynn scandal has finally settled, which it hasn't quite yet).

As for the Wynn being a harbinger of things to come, we'd say the same 30 or so people voted for the other properties following suit -- and we weren't among them. We voted for the policy being suspended temporarily in an economic downturn.

    Paid Parking
I don't know what will happen or what others will do, but for myself as soon as I have to pay for parking, consider me gone. Right now I'm an Emerald at Boyd's and Diamond with Caesars so I don't pay parking. I doubt if I'll make those levels next year so my frequent trips to Vegas will be over. I absolutely hate to pay resort fee's and parking fee's when all you do is lose money (usually) in a casino. Their greed is becoming to much, if other people wish to to vacation there, then go for it. The cost of the trip there plus all the other excessive fee's makes it cheaper to stay at home and gamble. I live in Michigan and there are over 20 Indian casino's I can go to and they are not as greedy as they are in Vegas.

    Stay Home
I agree with Gramps. After 22 Vegas trips since 1999, I stopped in 2017. Resort fees and parking fees are the issue. I too, live in Michigan and there are many very nice casinos that aren't as greedy as Vegas. I miss the trips, but I'm staying home.

    Not Me
I didn't vote cuz you don't have "who cares, cuz I ain't payin no stinking parking (or resort) fees." I stay at 4Q;s (no resort fees). On the very rare trips to strip where I would encounter these, I'll Uber or something. When these fees start everywhere, my 4/5 trips/year stop. As a VP player, things are all that rosy these days.

    paid parking
I imagine Wynn rescission could lead to rescission at nearby competitors like Venetion/Palazzo & TI as well as free parking at the yet to open Drew and the prior Stardust/Echelon/?. Cosmo, Caesars, and MGM will probably continue until nearby competition forces them to grudgingly rescind, casino by casino, North to South.

I also object to paying for parking (to be a customer), so I wouldn't go there! We used to spend a total of six weeks or so each year, but that's a total turnoff! Count me out!

    The facts
The Wynn's parking garage, since the removal of fee, is fuller on a daily basis. Whether or not more people are ga bling, it has to have a positive impact to their bottom line. As to the other casinos mentioned in the poll, it seems the only one who thinks they make money on gambling is the Cosmo, although Caesars and MGM casinos seem busy with gamblers.Maybe those gamblers do not drive and park a car. If they do not consider gamblers as part of their revenue generators, I'm guessing the fees will stay forever, unless the new owners have other thoughts on the matter.

    little effect
As usual, this turned into a group rant about taxes and resort fees and why people hate Las Vegas now because of them. I don't recall any of that being part of the poll. Keith Crane is the only one who stuck to the topic so far.

Wynn is, in effect, remote from MGM/Caesars/Cosmo country. Wynn/Encore's neighbors include two others who don't charge for parking, TI and Venetian/Palazzo. Three if you count Casino Royale.

My prediction is that those who charge for parking at this moment will continue to do so; the precedent is set and solidarity counts for a lot. Certainly some will raise fees along the way, a practice already established.

Wynn's rescission of parking fees was somewhat of a surprise, no guess as to why other than that a large portion of Wynn visitors arrive and depart in limos and lay enough on the tables to make it a nice PR move to keep the smaller players without affecting the bottom line. I predict Wynn will keep it free for now.

    Parking isn't free
I just think paid parking came along with the building of T-Mobile arena and it created a parking nightmare where casinos had to restrict parking for customers by charging everyone. In L.A. it costs an arm and a leg for parking near Staples arena on event nights and fluctuates in price depending on what is playing there. Casinos should provide free parking for hotel guests and those who go to an event and will patronize the casino or restaurants, that would be fair.

    No "rant " here..
Expressing one's feelings about the never ending erosion of values in Vegas is wrongfully called a "rant". Bull - stating the truth is never a "rant". What is missing here, concerning the aforementioned "rant" is the fact that Vegas is NO longer a fit for many who refuse to be ripped off for things that used to be gratis. If one's rent doubled, or food costs doubled - would one stating their displeasure be considered a "rant" - or just stating facts? I agree with Gramps - let the rest of the ignorant pay these idiotic charges - these are the "new wave" of idiots that Vegas targets.
