Poll : 01 May - 14 May 2019

Q:

Well, gang, based on feedback from the poll preview, including a pivotal piece to the puzzle from LVA pen pal AlontheNet, we've reconstructed this poll. It's now a mirror image of the question from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor Authorities 2018 "Visitor Profile Study" that prompted the initial idea: to wit, "What is the primary purpose of your current visit to Las Vegas?"

Gambling was the primary purpose of 7% of LVCVA respondents. So one way to determine the accuracy of that result is to offer up the same choices from the Study and see how LVAers compare.

Our question is, What was the primary purpose of your last trip to Las Vegas? And since the intention of this poll is to determine the primary purpose, you can vote for only one of the choices. As always, comments welcome. And thanks for voting

Analysis

Wow. Up until yesterday, the highest vote-getter was "for vacation/pleasure." But then "to gamble" overtook it by a few votes.

We're not surprised. We knew that the primary purpose to visit Las Vegas for many people is to vacation -- and gambling is a part of it. But either way, the 43% in our poll is a major discrepancy from the results from the 2018 Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's annual "Visitor Profile Study" on which this poll was based --  to wit: that 7% of people listed their primary purpose as gambling.

A couple other results aligned quite nicely: 43% (ours) to 40% (theirs) came for vacation/pleasure, while 4% of respondents to both polls came for a special event.

But 4% (ours) compared to 8% (theirs) came for a convention or corporate meeting, while 2% (ours) compared to 19% (theirs) came to visit family or friends. Big difference there. Our "other business" selection was negligible, while theirs garnered 8%.

The main thing in this poll is the differential between gamblers. True, our readers are gamblers, while the random LVCVA survey respondents obviously aren't. Still, we believe our number is much more representative than theirs.

Why I came to Las Vegas
I always gamble when I go but I also always take in shows, sightseeing etc. I always go for at least a week so can't gamble all the time. You should for option for Pleasure/gamble. You can gamble anywhere now,Why would you go to Vegas just to gamble?

    well done!
I probably missed the goal of the poll in the preview...sorry! The phrase "ever come to Las Vegas" narrowed my perspective.

Vacation/pleasure surely factors in for many who would vote "To gamble", still gambling is at the center of it, for me and mine at least. JMHO.

    Las Vegas
My wife and I have been coming to Las Vegas for over 30 years. We have seen many hotel casinos built and have seen many,(if not all) of the casinos attractions. We mostly visit neighborhood casinos. We enjoy Las Vegas advisor coupon book. Tony Curtis does a fine job and running his organization. My wife and I have known about the Las Vegas advisor for over 30 years. Thanks Anthony!

    no way
I find it incredible that only 7% of respondents to the LVCVA said [admitted?] that their primary purpose for visiting was to gamble. Which is to say that 93% of visitors don't come for the gambling? To whom does the Authority send surveys? I've not received one.

Does the LVCVA have a problem admitting that Las Vegas is a gamblin' town?

I predict that LVA voters tell 'the rest of the story'...To gamble.

    Reasons
People typically travel for more than 1 reason.
A simple yes or no follow on question would be:
--- If gambling was banned from Las Vegas would you visit? ---
We go so I can gamble and my wife can enjoy the Spas, great food, and entertainment.
If gambling was banned we can find the rest in many other cities.

    Because Vegas
I used to meet up with friends from NY for “Super Game” i..e., Super Bowl weekend and I once asked them why they didn’t just go to AC since it’s closer and they all agreed because it’s not Las Vegas. Nothing compares to everything you can do in Vegas from gambling, shows, eating, shopping, clubs, etc.

While gambling is certainly a big reason, eating is equal. The variety and quality is tops. I know - prices are high. The gambling payoffs are also down. It's Vegas! If both continue their current trend, we will eventually stop going.

    Dual purpose trip
I voted other. My last trip(4/20/19-4/30/19) was dual purpose. My first 4 days was to primarily gamble with a couple nice dinners and a show thrown in. I was there with my sister who had a longtime friend coming out also. The next 6 day were for work. Although I did take advantage of another weekend thrown in.

    Vacation
The wife and I like to visit Vegas when ever we can. Visiting different casinos and seeing great shows. We also like to use as many LVA coupons we can on each visit. Kind of like a game/challenge. We also like to go off strip and see the rest of Vegas.

As a regular reader, I often find that I don’t fit into any of your profiles and I’m sure that I’m not alone. I’ve been coming to this crazy/wonderful town since the mid 50’s. I have seen it all. We live in LA and have a vacation home in Summerlin. Being about a 4-5 hour drive, we are here every couple weeks all year round. We used to do all of our gambling downtown, but have watched it turn into sleaze and booze. To get that old Vegas feel and value, we visit the suburb casinos.

I voted other because yes I come for vacation/pleasure, but the main reason I go to Vegas is the shows, food and attractions.

    Only Vegas
I can gamble a lot of places but not like gambling in Vegas. Vegas has magic. Everyplace else is just a machine.
