Poll : 11 December - 24 December 2019

Q:

Las Vegas has some great retail outlets, many of which tie in with the city's reputation for bargains and deals, even on high-end designer gear. Yet we haven't run a poll on shopping for nearly nine years. So it's time to revisit your shopping preferences here: If you do, where do you shop when you visit Las Vegas? If you don't, the first choice is for you. Otherwise, you can vote for as many choices as you like. (And thanks to Adam for reminding us that many of you show up at our office to buy books and products!)

Analysis

Though the number-one vote-getter is "I don't shop in Vegas," that's skewed quite a bit, we believe, by all the multiple votes from the respondents who do.

And in the poll preview, comments were pretty emphatic about including CVS and Walgreens, which we weren't inclined to do initially, since we meant shopping shopping, not going to the drug/sundries stores for bottled water, toothpaste, and booze.

Be that as it may, if you start with the shopping shopping results at number 3, they start to line up properly, with the Strip malls, the outlet shops, chocolate, and the big chatchke store.

We were a little surprised the Grand Canal Shops didn't place higher, since it's on the Strip and next to 10,000 hotel rooms, but it's a bit north of most of the action, so location probably takes a bit of a toll.

Gamblers General Store gets the shoppers, as does Huntington Press; beyond those, it's a good indication of the closest and most popular shopping to where the bulk of visitors usually are. Also, as we try to do in inclusive lists like this, if you like to shop, but you want to branch out a bit, most of your major options are right here on this page. Go crazy.

    A+ Turquoise Traders
On every annual LV trip since mid-aughts, we visited this eclectic, dusty, cramped shop on LV Blvd between strip and downtown. Chief Bob(?), who relocated to E Charleston around 2014, always had some great silver jewelry and turquoise deals. My wife chose a beautiful petit point squash blossom necklace for our 25th (silver) anniversary. We were sorry to find the shop closed in 2018. A craftsman and storyteller, Chief would also do quick and efficient jewelry repair work while regaling customers with tales of early Vegas, of horseback riding and hunting west toward Red Rock Canyon, or working as an extra in John Wayne films. As with all great storytellers, Chief probably stretched the truth and his native American heritage may have been suspect, but that was part of the deal and we miss him.
I could not find an obit in the RJ. Do you know the rest of the story?

    Everywhere
I only checked the places that we often go to, even though I could have probably checked almost all of them. There are certain places, like Bonanza Gift Shop, Coke & M&M, and few others, that we try to get to on every trip, but my wife has rarely met a place to shop where she wouldn't find something to buy. When we venture to Laughlin, their outlet mall is also one of her favorites, too. And then we always shop for gas in Bullhead City.

    Walgreens/CVS
I'm one of the few who LOVES the proliferation of Walgreens and CVS on the Strip. It makes packing and traveling much less stressful, because I know if I forget anything, it can be replaced easily. It also means I can stock up on bottled water, snacks, etc. without having to pay exorbitant hotel gift shop prices. Some might think there are too many Walgreens/CVS stores on the Strip, but even things that are close to each other on the Strip are still a long walk, so I'm glad there's always one close by.

    Deseret Industries
This is a great discount store in NLV. Usually we go there every visit.

    Shop at Ghirardelli's
We always used to stop at the Ghirardelli shop and buy gifts for those at home in Texas. Is it still there since they remodeled that area between the Linq and Harrah's or did they move it somewhere else? Haven't seen it anywhere lately.

    shopping
Most times I don't really shop, but have on occasion visited a few of the places on the list. I usually stop at a grocery store for provisions as I stay at a place with a full kitchen 99% of the time, and if I need anything the .99 only stores are AMAZING!! I'm from Seattle and we have the standard dollar store chains, but nothing compares to these.

    Downtown
    (1) ABC Store, as well as the other little souvenir stores, on Fremont Street downtown. (2) Spinetti’s gambling equipment and casino memorabilia.

    Casino Gift Shops
I'm not sure if they still do, but the gift shops at most Boyd casinos used to have good prices and give a good discount for using your points on wine and liquor. I can't vouch for this though since I quit drinking several years ago.

I am a lover of everything Dachshund (aka Wienerdog) related and I have found many unique items in casino gift shops over the years. The first was a small(paper weight sized) bronze dog on its back waiting for a belly-rub from the Sahara in 1995, next was a jeweled pill box found at the Barbary Coast c. 2001. They had many pill boxes of all sorts. Another find was a jeweled wienerdog pin from the Rio.
