Q:

As we enter the new year, we're looking ahead to areas on which to focus our editorial attentions. Dining, of course, is one of the major areas, so we'd like to know what, if any, are your special dietary needs? You can vote for as many choices as apply to you, and if you have any particular requests on Las Vegas dining coverage you'd like to see, please let us know in the comment boxes.

Analysis

A full majority of respondents have no special dietary considerations, which we thought would be the case.

Beyond that, other than sugar-free and low-carb, which are a variation on the same theme and the most prevalent food restrictions these days, the distribution of special diets is fairly close, from 39 vegetarians to 15 kosher.

We thought we'd see more gluten-free votes, perhaps somewhere between weight-control and vegetarian, and we were a little surprised to see 18 ketogenic and 17 auto-immune, which are fairly new concepts, as far as we can tell.

Of course, as numerous commenters pointed out, unless visitors are on a strict diet for health reasons, trips to Vegas tend to send eating customs at home right out the window.

As always, thanks to everyone for voting and weighing in; it gives us some good information for upcoming dining reviews.

Where do I write in steak and beer?

    Another category
Low sodium. It's way too easy (and unnecessary) to get a day's worth of sodium from a single meal.

No meat, no dairy, no oil
The better restaurants will work with me to make a meal according to my health needs. As a result, I have to go to really expensive places.

    Buffets - yeah
We only have one life to gorge. Bring on the Prime Rib.

  • James Rupert Jan-03-2018
    Red Meat
When in Las Vegas my dietary requirement is large amounts of medium-rare steak or prime rib accompanied by greasy fried side dishes. I can worry about my health the other 51 weeks of the year!

I'm a diabetic. Have to limit the carbs. Love the South Point buffet mainly because they have a large selection of sugar-free/no sugar added desserts. They still have carbs, but a reasonable amount of them.

All "diet" bets are off when in Vegas
Just came back from a mid-December trip.

I was on a low carb diet several years ago and lost about 40 lbs. I was maintaining weight for about a year on low/reduced carbs. when i got to Vegas I made the conscious decision eat whatever i wanted to...period.

For 5 days I enjoyed myself, including buffets at Red Rock, Rampart, Breakfast at Ellis Island (all three with the LVA BOGO coupons), etc. Unless I was SERIOUSLY ill, I can't imagine not eating what i want in a yearly trip to Vegas.

5 "bad eating" days out of 365 days per year shouldn't be an issue. "The weight you gain in Vegas, stays in Vegas" (or at least it should.

    Dietary Needs
Quality food and great customer service.

    Voted for two
None for myself, but my wife prefers gluten-free. I would have also checked "weight-control" but when I'm vacationing in town I remove that dietary caution. :-)

    My New Eating Plan
My new eating plan "lets you eat the foods you like and still lose weight". Lost 36 lbs so far. Bring on the buffets. 2017 was a good year.

    Eat like Jean
I'm a big fan of Jean Scott and like her tips for eating in LV, since she and Brad get so many comped meals. I'm certainly not in that category, but love to take advantage of the variety of dining available while I'm in LV and use coupons when I can. It's hard not to over-indulge and I certainly do, but do my best to be aware of what I'm eating/drinking and not stuff too much. Except at the M buffet. That's not a place for self-control.

    Go crazy, almost
Generally I try to opt for foods that are high in protein and fiber, and relatively low in simple carbohydrates, but I'm not going to feel guilty about swerving outside the guidelines a bit when in vegas. It's a place to be decadent.

    Organic
Organic is a good choice healthwise, but everyone wants to make a lot of money off of it that it becomes not worth it. I'm a steak and potatoes kind of guy, so I'm not into needing organic personally, but I wish it were more affordable so it doesn't cost you so much for the privilege.

When I am in Vegas I am on a See Food Diet. I see food and I eat it!

    HealthY???
While I feel for those who have legit dietary restrictions, I am selfish and hope not much space is wasted on this in the monthly newsletter. I particularly have no love lost for those who follow the latest worthless fad - i.e. gluten free - unless you have celiac disease. Another example - diet drinks - unless you are diabetic.

    SALAD BARS
I love salad bars, but VERY allergic to sulfites and preservatives sprayed on lettuce and root vegetables. They look pretty, but they make me sick.
