Poll : 28 February - 13 March 2018

Q:

In a recent Today's News entry, plus two recent Questions of the Day, we noted that housekeepers are nearly invisible when it comes to hotel guests leaving tips during and/or after their stay. Though the article cited in Today's News claimed that "more than two-thirds" of guests don't leave even a small tip, our own inquiries found that the percentage is even smaller, closer to 15%. We commented in the QoD that this was a good idea for a poll, so here it is.

You can vote for as many choices as apply and comments are always welcome. And thanks to everyone who submitted suggestions on the Poll Preview page.

Analysis

It's perhaps a little difficult to tell by the results of this poll how many people do tip hotel housekeepers, though if you add up all the votes from those who tip $1-$2 (14%), $3-$5 (19%), and more than $5 (3%), you get 36%, or more than one in every three Vegas visitors. At the same time, only 3% of voters admit that they never tip the housekeepers. So there's a pretty big discrepancy between those who say they do or don't and 100% (as AKQJ10 rightly points out).

Still, we've always believed that Vegasphiles who subscribe to LVA or even just visit the website and vote in the polls are savvier than the average bear, which is why the number of tippers is around double that of the typical statistic of 15%-20%. Also, it's possible that Las Vegas itself, where tipping is a big part of the collective consciousness, indirectly promotes housekeepers tips, which contributes to the higher percentage.

The comments to this poll are especially instructive -- for example, tidying up the room to make the housekeepers' job a little easier, leaving the tip on the pillow as a sign or under the pillow to hide it from the supervisor or bellman, and tipping more for a suite than a standard room.

Most interesting, though, is the compassion for the housekeepers that's evident in the majority of the comments. These women aren't only hard-working and underpaid, but are actually at some risk for harassment and violence (a recent movement is to arm them with panic buttons for such emergencies). It might be a generalization to say that tippers are more tenderhearted than non-tippers, but it's not one for which we'd be inclined to apologize.

I usually opt out of housekeeping. I’ll tip if I ask for more towels etc.

    Tipping Housekeeping
In my younger days I didn't know about tipping housekeeping. I'm talking 35 years ago. Now I've progress to tipping every day, so the person who cleaned the room gets the tip. These poor people, mostly women, are working for peanuts, cleaning who knows what in room after room, how can one not tip them, be it nightly, at the end or something in between? When I get a 2 room suite, which is the norm when I stay at the Flamingo, I leave more tip, especially when one or both daughters come. I hope no one leaves their spare change, how insulting. At least convert it to paper first :)

    It depends
I always tidy up before leaving each day. This includes straightening the bed spread.

When I'm staying more than one night, on my first morning, I leave a note on the corner of the bed asking that the covers not be tucked in. Next to the note I leave $5.

I have about a 50% success rate. Obviously, tips on the remaining nights will be affected by whether or not the covers are tucked in.

They deserve it. Hard work low pay. They are usually nice and get extra things for you when asked. Often leave a note for xtra towels etc.

    Tips
My thinking is that the people who don't tip will be less likely to vote on this survey than people who do tip, which may skew the results.

    Hide the tip!
I always hide the tip under one of the bed pillows. Lots of times a supervisor comes into the room first to make sure it's empty and they take the tip before the person who does the work can get it. Also one time the bellman took the tip when he picked up our luggage (we were out of the room at the time) but we came back to the room and saw the money was missing.

    Tipping Housekeeping
Most Guest Room Attendants are very hard working and very friendly - but also not paid very well. We leave $5 per night for a regular room and $10 per night for a suite.

    Tip the Maid!
We always leave a tip for housekeeping. If we stay one night, it's usually around $3, and multiplied if we stay multiple nights. If the room is not great when we check in, we call the front desk, but more importantly, the maid that cleans up afterward is cleaning up after us. And we certainly want to thank her for what she will be required to do. These underpaid individuals work so hard for so little that I would be ashamed of myself if I didn't give them something.

    Housekeeping tip
We straighten the room and bathroom to a T, still leave $5 each morning (on a pillow, the 'universal' sign for housekeeper tip).

I wonder why everyone says the housekeepers make low pay? I'm not certain that is the case, but still I'd tip anyone who cleans up after me regardless. Some time back on LVA someone in the know posted a salary range for hotel housekeepers, and it was pretty decent, certainly higher than minimum wage, especially when benefits are included. And some folks like that type of work. A good friend's mother cleaned houses to supplement the family's income, and she loved it. Go figure.

I leave my change, but, because I mostly play slots that comes out to $3.00 - $5.00 per night. It is still money which I think they would appreciate more than no tip. If I am staying 4 nights I do not require sheets or towels to be changed out.

    Best Way To Tip
I usually tip $5 daily at nice strip hotels, but the sooner you tip, the better your room gets taken care of by housekeeping. Sometimes if I see the housekeeper in the hallway after I check-in, I’ll find out if she takes care of my room and ask for extra towels or shampoo and tip her for it. I usually get excellent service when I do that. Give it a try.

I do tip if I stay more than one night, at least 2 dollars. I don't use the room except to shower and get a few hours of sleep, often I just sleep on top of the covers. I have never had a bad experience with a housekeeper but in all the years I have been going to Las Vegas I only met the housekeeper of my room about 3 times. For me I don't go to Vegas to stay in a room and watch TV.

    Tip plus change
I leave a $3 per day tip plus all the change I've collected.

    tipping
I TIP EVERYDAY. My daughter was a housekeeper, I heard all the trash people leave, plus they don't get paid like people think. Bedspreads get washed here and there so I wouldn't lay on top of the bed for a nap!

    Housekeepers
I tip $5 night whether in Las Vegas or on business or pleasure trips elsewhere. I DO see a difference in service. Occasionally I leave a note for the housekeeper for additional amenities and Always get positive response.

Those that clean my room are low paid and under appreciated. I always try and help them out and thank them for the job they do. If you don't tip, don't look yourself in the mirror, you won't like what you see.

    Housekeeping
We always leave a $5 tip, plus if we order an extra blanket or pillow, we give them a couple of dollars when it's delivered. We also leave it every morning so the same person that cleans the room, receives the tip.

    Tips
I use housekeeping services about once every 3 days. I always tip at least $5 each time. (If I've stayed only one night it's $3). To me, it's the CODB. If you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't go. If you choose to not tip, shame on you (unless the service was bad). Housekeepers generally are poorly paid and rely on tips, just like good servers, valets, dealers, etc.
One exception (besides poor service): I noticed in Atlantic City that often, when I arrived in the room on the first day, kthere would be something missing in the room that should have been there. Nothing major, just small stuff. I'd request it from housekeeping and tip the person who brought it. After this occurred a few times, I felt like this might be a scam to get more tips. So now my "rule" is: if I request something that should have been there in the first place, no tip for bringing it to my room, just a polite thank you.

    Tip Housekeeping
I generally tip $5.00 per day.I leave it every morning so the person cleaning my room gets it. If you leave it all at the end there is a good chance the person who cleaned your room the first few days will not get anything. They have days off too and if they cleaned the room day 1,2 and 3 and the next day is their day off, they would miss out on $15.00 when you leave it on day 4. On the other hand the new housekeeper is jumping for joy because she got a $20.00 tip for one day.

  • Robert E. Mar-03-2018
    Hell yes!
These are some of the hardest working yet lowest paid folks in the house. At the same time i have almost never failed to receive a smile and a good morning from any housekeeper i have passed. Also i have always been granted any request for any extra service i have asked for. Hell yes i tip these good folks.

$5 per day. If 2 beds and both used and/or 2 baths and both used, $10.

  • emtcater Mar-08-2018
    Yes
Years ago, my mother taught me to leave a tip for the maid, which I do if I'm staying for more than 1 night. Couple of bucks each morning, with a note saying "Thank you!". It's not only common decency, you'd be amazed how much it's appreciated by them. On one trip, I left the tip, and also left a note asking for extra coffee supplies for the in room coffee maker. I kid you not, I could have drank coffee for a month with what she left.

    Housekeeping Tips
I usually travel solo and I only use housekeeping at the end of my 2-3 night stay when I check out. I don't have them clean the room since I usually don't need it and if I have any food related garbage I take it and throw it out myself or in the maids cart when I see them on my floor. If I need any towels I ask and then tip for that. I usually leave $5-10 per stay, and my room is always clean and garbage is all in the can when I checkout. The maids work so hard they deserve the tips.

March 17 pole. What is the average pay for housekeepers?

  • Russell Beyer Mar-17-2018
    Do Not Disturb
I don't like people coming in my room when I'm not there, so I keep the Do Not Disturb sign on for my entire stay. As such, since I do not receive any housekeeping services during my stay, I do not tip.

  • Fast Mar-17-2018
    Tip bonus
I always(usually)tip. Just got back from Vegas and forgot to leave one after thinking of it(embarrassed). The bonus is that several times I have received free beverages which can't be taken on a plane so I leave them for the maid. Put a note on said beverage "enjoy".

  • Straski Mar-17-2018
    Hard to believe.
I talk to hotel room cleaners all over the world when I travel and especially Las Vegas and they all claim that only 15% or less of the people leave tips. My wife and I always leave it nightly.

  • Annie Mar-17-2018
    Housekeeper wages
I have great respect and affection for the housekeepers I've seen in Vegas, but I'm not sure that it is correct to call them poor or poorly paid.

One of the great success stories of Vegas in the '70s and '80s is that the union - The Culinary Union - that represents many or most of the hardworking laborers on the Strip succeeded in getting their members a true living wage that has enabled them to own homes and enjoy a true middle class life even without English language skills or a high school diploma. Of course, the low cost of living helped too.

    Underpaid?
In Nevada the state's minimum wage is $8.25/hr.

In Las Vegas, Culinary Union Local 226 housekeepers in the hotel/casinos earn $13.87/hr as a starting wage.

After they complete probation, it goes to $17.34/hr — and they also get the usual union benefits, such as healthcare, paid vacations, pension contributions from the employer, etc.

    When there's no housekeeping
When you opt out of housekeeping or the hotel does not offer it (such as an Extended Stay facility), cleaning people do come in after you leave. Should you tip at all then?
