Poll : 21 August - 03 September 2019

Q:

Last month, the online restaurant-reservation platform OpenTable released a list of the nation's 100 most scenic restaurants, based on reviews collected from diners. The four that made the list in Las Vegas included the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris (which occupies the 11th floor of the tower overlooking the Bellagio Fountains); Giada at the Cromwell (which sits on the second floor diagonally across from the Fountains); Mon Ami Gabi at Paris (with its people-watching patio); and Hell's Kitchen at Caesars (which stumped us).

We're not unaware that the OpenTable list is the result of a less-than-scientific survey. Still, we were so surprised by the winners that we figured we'd see how our poll respondents rated OpenTable's choices as compared to all the other possibilities.

The following are our 29 contenders for best-view honors; OpenTable's four are included in the interest of correlation accuracy. Also like the OpenTable selections, we're not concerned here with the relative merits of the food and prices, just the view

Thanks for voting.

Analysis

As could easily be expected, the highest view garnered the most votes. But the truism, the higher you are, the better the view, didn't hold true down the list; the next highest view, the Eiffel Tower restaurant (#2) is only on the 11th floor, while the other real high flyers, such as Voodoo Steakhouse (#6), Foundation Room (#9), Rivea (#16), and Vetri Cucina (#20) were much lower. (In fairness, Vetri, at the top of the Palms, is new enough that perhaps not a lot of people have eaten there or visited.)

Interestingly, Mon Ami Gabi placed #3 by dint of its people-watching location; people-watching is a spectator sport in its own class and we'll probably run a poll on that sometime in the foreseeable future. Other good low-down views of the Strip were popular in the poll: Giadia, Hexx, Senor Frogs, and Hell's Kitchen.

Otherwise, Picasso placed relatively high for both its artwork and location on the Bellagio lake, as did Spago and Jasmine. Mizumi has the view of the lake at the Wynn, though it received only two votes and the Hawthorn Grill at the Rampart has a beautifully bucolic view of gardens, though like Vetri, it's little-known.

Ultimately, Open Table's four selections did pretty well: Eiffel Tower placed second, Mon Ami Gabi third, and Giadia seventh; only Hell's Kitchen was an afterthought at #19.

Open Table's top four weren't as far off as we initially imagined. Other than Top of the World trouncing the rest of the competition, Open Table's survey was pretty accurate after all.

View- If you can get it
while I would normally vote for the Top of The World, Binion's Steakhouse has three things going for it: available reservation times, reasonable gourmet food prices, and just about your choice of tables. My number one consideration for a Vegas dinner is THE VIEW, but if you can't get a great table what use is a view over someone else's table? Eiffel Tower and Rivea at Delano are a prime example- we were seated "inland". Tough to get a table for two on the window at Stratophere's Top of the World too, but if you can score that window seat this is by far the best view in Vegas.

    prediction
Only 379 votes so far, and maybe 10 days before voting is closed. I wish I had dined at many of these on the list. I fear the results will favor Open Table's only because they are well known "must do" places for vacationers (like myself). I'm betting votes will primarily reflect 1) Bellagio fountain views; 2) people watching/Strip traffic/bus exhaust views; and 3)panoramic views (especially at night). I hope those who voted for the places that got fewer votes will describe the views and why they are the "most scenic". We may want to go out of our way to try some of those. Thanks.

    Beer Park at Paris...
charges a "concession fee" of 4.7% added to all checks; and probably several of the others listed have similar charges.

Enjoy the view--you're paying for it.

    Oscars?
Not sure how Oscar's ranks so high these days. Unless of course you like the view of the back side of a zipline stand.
