Poll : 26 September - 09 October 2018

Q:

If you were expecting a survey on hotel-room criteria, that poll will run two weeks from today, October 10. We deemed this poll more appropriate for the time period.

It's by suggestion from "KarenRocks," who writes, “For months now, I've been seeing Vegas Strong decals on cars around Las Vegas and many have a Vegas silhouette. Some of the silhouettes look like they were done by people who’ve never been here! I'm wondering what iconic signs/architecture people think would be mandatory in a good Las Vegas silhouette. Also, whether it's important to have them realistically sequenced (Strat to Luxor, for example) or not.”

Thank you, Karen -- we love poll suggestions. Here it is.

Select as many Las Vegas architectural and signage icons as you feel should appear in the Vegas Strong silhouette. Keep in mind that the shape of the signs and buildings is the important element, since they’re black on a white background. Also, vote for whether or not you believe that they should be in proper geographical order. And comments always welcome.

Analysis

No doubt about it, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada sign is the most iconic image and shape of all the Las Vegas possibilities for inclusion in the Vegas Strong silhouettes. The number of votes it received were nearly double the second choice of voters, the Bellagio Fountains.

Two of the other top five vote-getters are extremely recognizable shapes on the Las Vegas skyline: Stratosphere and Luxor. And the fifth is, perhaps, the runner-up for the image that best represents Las Vegas, and certainly downtown, Vegas Vic. The High Roller, coming in sixth, has also entered the Vegas visual aesthetic since it debuted four and a half years ago (March 2014),

We were interested that significantly more people voted for geographic verite -- no artistic license for nearly 250 of you!

Though the commenters who insisted on Vegas-only shapes spoke for many more people who we're sure feel the same way, the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty placed fairly high.

The bottom five were shapes we tossed into the mix just to fill out the poll.

    Avoid general images
    Anything that could be from elsewhere (Statue of Liberty, for example) probably shouldn't be in the Vegas silhouette. Just things that are found only here.

    Vegas only
    I only voted for a few, in total agreement with Toni. Any image should be purely Vegas. However, I don't believe geographic order is necessary, but I voted for neither choice because I think there should be multiple silhouettes. It isn't necessary to only have one Vegas Strong background.

    silhouette...
    I voted only for the Las Vegas Sign.

    Of all the choices, that was the only thing that is uniquely Vegas. Most of them are a Vegas version / interpretation of some other city's icon.

    Oh, sure, as a group, many of the choices are identified with Vegas, but how many of them, individually, represent Vegas?

    And most importantly, how many of them are even recognizable as a silhouette?

    I think it might need a very specific Gambling Silhouettes and another idea
    Suggest a gambling element, it is Vegas after all. dice might be able to work if they are a little separate. Black dies and the dots white. 11 as the number showing?

    Depending on your target audience, (or if you are in a sarcastic mood) a caricature of a Cannabis leaf would be very contemporary -reflects the latest Las Vegas "attraction"

    iconic signs
    Toni has a point about things found elsewhere, but that's the fun thing about LV. You can take a trip around the world in LV. That's what makes it's skyline so unique. It's a shame that the iconic signs have gone by the wayside(or Boneyard thank goodness) and have been replaced by gigantic tv screens. So many of the new casinos have no individuality, just "modern" looking.

    Statue and Tower as bookends
    Right to Left:
     - Statue of Liberty;
     - one Caesars Palace guard facing center, holding Ax
     - High Roller;
     - Monorail in the background behind the High Roller;
     - Vegas Vic;
     - Eiffel Tower
     - If room at the bottom of the image, partial Roulette wheel.

    Might be too much. Had color been an option. the Paris balloon instead of the Eiffel tower. But the balloon wouldn't show that well in black. Thanks.

    I believe items originated in vegas should be in the silhouette

    logo
    keep it simple, love the "don't fence me in" NV icon. most of the old classic places gone, guess I'd go with the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, or maybe a shot of the strip at night south to north from I-15/Rose pkwy (as in you finally arrived from CA)?

    Only one image would be appropriate
    A big "NRA" with a circle around it and a slash through it, like a no parking sign. The only way all this sentiment means anything is if Vegas citizens do something to stop a recurrence of the tragedy, and stopping gun love is the only way to do that. Anything else is VegasWeak.

    Wrong wheel
    I’ve seen one that features a wheel that is clearly NOT the high roller.

    Congrats, Betty Willis!
    Her iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign once again comes up #1.
