Poll : 21 November - 04 December 2018

Q:

Seafood? In the desert? Absolutely! And there's plenty of it. You can get your fresh-fish fix at more than three dozen restaurants and seafood buffets in Las Vegas, which is why we’re running this poll (by suggestion from a reader; thank you). Also, we’ve never taken a survey on seafood eateries before.

Vote for all the fisheterias that you like. And tell us why you like them!

Analysis

A lot of people don't like seafood: too fishy for most (one wag sent an email likening its taste to "low tide on the mud flats") and allergic for some. The top vote-getter at 10% for None of the Above is skewed a little low, since those respondents almost certainly voted only once, while the others presumably voted for multiple selections.

Big Al's at the Orleans has been a local favorite for many years; we've eaten there ourselves many times. And it's a great value play, with a $12 weekday lunch special (the shrimp scampi is the thing to get) and large entrees for $30 or less. Al's ladles up excellent clam chowder (both white and red) too.

Joe's Stone Crab is by far the most popular fish house on the Strip, evidenced by the fact that it placed at #18 of the 100 top-grossing independent restaurants in the entire U.S.; it serves an estimated 216,000 meals annually at an average ticket of $87.

It's no surprise that the buffets at M and Main Street Station placed third and fourth, respectively. These are the two most popular buffets in their respective classes and they do seafood right.

You can never go wrong at an Emeril's restaurant and his Fish House has been a favorite for decades.

Oyster bars are well-liked everywhere, as the votes for the ones at South Point, Harrah's, and Palace Station indicate. We can't count the number of times we've eaten at Palace Station's, going all the way back to when the adjacent Broiler featured its $9.99 16-ounce king-crab special.

Thanks to everyone who voted in and commented on this poll; it was a specialty survey for sure, but it helps us plan our dining reviews.

    Buffet upcharge
I don’t eat seafood so it really bugs me when a buffet charges more on their seafood night without offering a discount for non seafood eaters.

I mean, can’t they do a wristband thing or something?

    over priced seafood
Unfortunately unless there is happy hour deal (eg. $1 oysters)
all sea food in Vegas is overpriced. Stick with the prime rib or steaks of you want value.

    CRABS.
    No,I don't like the taste.
    They have 8 legs,like a spider.
That's why a tarantula tastes like shrimp.

Not like it used to be
I used to love shrimp and crab legs, but I guess my taste buds have changed...age and medicines do that. Just passing by the splayed out crab legs at Vegas buffets makes me queasy, as do the big bowls of shrimp. I did take a chance on a side dish of a huge crab claw at Harvest, which was surprisingly good. I would try that again. But seafood at buffets? No.

    choices
the best sea food at a reasonable is at almost any chinnese buffet.

    Ditto on Big Al's...
which is great and reminds me of spring break in N'Yawl'ns.

But I don't see any sushi places on the list. Maybe they fall in a different category? We like Zenshin at South point, and Yelp lists pages and pages of others. I guess that would be better as a separate poll.
