Poll : 13 February - 26 February 2019

Q:

We answered this question, inconclusively we might add, as a Question of the Day on January 28 and wound up with such differences of opinion that we had to run a poll on it.

Is the Stratosphere on the Strip? Yes or no? And please, as always, let us and everyone hear the reasoning behind your opinions.

A:
1145 Total Votes
Yes
58% (666)
No
42% (479)

Analysis

The results are in and the ayes have it -- and by a fairly significant margin.

It's official, at least according to the 666 people who voted for the Strat being a Las Vegas Strip-worthy hotel-casino-tower and damn the location three blocks inside the city limits. After all, what's 700 or so feet from Sahara Avenue to West Bob Stupak Avenue in the cosmic scheme of things?

Also, in a brilliant move, the city installed a sexy City of Las Vegas sign in a traffic island in the middle of the strange intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard South, S. Main Street, and E. St. Louis Avenue, which defines the "Gateway District" between the Strip and downtown. Given that the Strat is south of the sign-slash-Gateway District, it seems to us that they're voting for the Strat to be on the Strip as well (even though the tower's taxes go to the city and not the county, unlike the rest of Strip revenues' taxes). So as Kurt wrote in the comments, the two signs lend themselves well to bookending the Strip.

We also like what Don said: "The north end of the Strip has to end somewhere, right? No better place than an iconic tower."

And of course, Candy, with her always-insightful commentary, has it that "The Stratosphere and SLS management can say they're 'on the Strip' if they want to."

To us, that's what it all boils down to. The late great Bob Stupak would be tickled: His claim in the ubiquitous ads for the fabulous VIP Vacation Package at Vegas World on the Las Vegas Strip finally came true.

    Seriously?
    Only two choices?

With all the opinions generated by the QoD, you’d think there would be more options. IE, to add demographic info to the option.

    Yes or No
What else is needed? If it were 60 feet more south it would be? If it's a sunny day maybe? Yes or No

  • O2bnVegas Feb-13-2019
    Coordinates please
What does the official area map define as "The Strip"? Is it The Strip" or "the Strip? LOL.

  • Rob Reid Feb-13-2019
    Not yet anyway
If the north end of the strip were to be revitalized and things start to grow again from the Sahara north, then maybe. It's not a simple geographic designation.

    It's In Las Vegas
Since "The Strip" isn't in Las Vegas and the Strat is in Las Vegas I would say no.

"The Strip" is a state of mind
From a practical standpoint when I say "Walk the Strip" I never walk to the Stratosphere. Have walked it many times (Like to walk) Have gone from Mandalay Bay but only as far North as I go is about SLS. Stratosphere is about 4 or 5 long blocks too far North for me to consider it "The Strip".

That said, if the monorail ever went down that far, I think people could start to think of it as on "The Strip". That would definitely help it get more traffic.

    It's "IFFY"
I don't think it is, but I can see where some people might think so.It's not downtown either, so it's in kind of a no man's land. If casinos were closer to it going toward downtown I would say yes, but with so far from the other strip casinos I say "no".

The north end of strip has to end somewhere, right? No better place than an iconic tower. IF the empty lot south of Sahara ever fills in, it would certainly be a continous "strip" of casinos, hotels, and businesses.

  • Dave in Seattle. Feb-13-2019
    Not really.
North of Sahara is not "The Strip".
I would say that the SLS is the most Northern casino on "The strip".

  • O2bnVegas Feb-13-2019
    Too far from the rest
I like Ronald Ziotkowski's theory, that the Strip is a "state of mind."

LVA's own Hotels site lists the Strat location as "Strip", while the South Point is (rightly so) "Off Strip"

The address of the Strat on their web site is 2000 Las Vegas Blvd. S. NV 89104. Hmm, S.? Meaning South? Huh? Maybe in 1940.

South Point's address is 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South. It follows that just having a Las Vegas Blvd address does not confer Strip status.

A bunch of casinos in close proximity would fit a "strip" state of mind designation, which excludes SLS and the Strat.

Of course, the Stratosphere's and SLS's management can say they are 'on the Strip' if they want to. Newbie visitors beware.

    JMHO.

Letter of the law, spirit of the law
Technically, based strictly on geography, we know the Stratosphere (I'll never call it "The Strat") is too far north to be on the Strip. However, I voted yes because everyone I know refers to it as "the far north end of the Strip" when discussing geography and landmarks.

  • Kurt Wiesenbach Feb-13-2019
     Las Vegas Boulevard
It isn't outside of the City limits like the rest of the "strip", but it's on the same road, and is basically where I consider the strip to end as it branches into two roads once you go past it. And now I feel more compelled to say it's the end of the strip, as the 2 Vegas signs bookend what I've always considered the strip anyway. So the strip should officially go from the Welcome to Las Vegas sign to the Welcome to Downtown sign!

  • Jersey Jeff Feb-13-2019
    Not out of sight
"Yes". You can see it from the strip, be drawn to it, and then walk to it if you want to.

  • Ray Feb-13-2019
    Why does this matter?
I agree that it is a state of mind. I consider it part of the Strip. Others believe it is not part of the Strip. But it doesn't matter because "the Strip" is not a legal entity, does not have its own government or services, cannot legally stop the Strat from saying it's on the Strip, and the Strat cannot force others to acknowledge the location. There is no official place named "the Strip. If someone says "I walked the entire Strip" they will inevitably be asked where they started and where they ended because the "entire" Strip is subject to a difference of opinion.

  • Kevin Lewis Feb-13-2019
    I live on the Strip
I like your point of view, Ray. If you say or think you're on the Strip, then you're on the Strip. When Grandma and Grandpa come to visit next Thanksgiving, I'm charging them for parking, and a resort fee if they want to stay overnight.

  • John Amato Feb-13-2019
    John
It's my favorite place to stay. I wrote in a few years ago and you had settled it for me: North of Sahara is not the Strip. If it's a subject of debate again I'll vote yes. It's surely an icon of the Las Vegas Strip. Then again when I walk to the SLS to get on the monorail I say "I am going to the strip today". I have been splitting my stays to 2 nights downtown and 2 or 3 at the Strat and you talk about a fun economical vacation! Love it!

    On the Map
I looked at your link to maps and can't find the Strat on the downtown maps or the strip map. Did you leave it off on purpose?

  • Jeffrey Small Mar-02-2019
    Conclusion
To determine whether the Strat is on the Strip, the following factors need to be examined:
--Does it have a resort fee?
    --Does it charge for parking?
--Does it pay 6/5 for Blackjack?
If the answer is "yes" it is on the Strip!

  • gaattc2001 Mar-02-2019
This may sound just a little bit cynical...
but it'll fit right in with the last few comments.

Whether or not the "Strat" is on the "Strip" is not the uppermost burning question on my mind: I haven't visited either of them in years.
