Poll : 15 April - 28 April 2020

Q:

This poll was suggested by Bob, whose handle, thebeachbum, many of you will recognize. We thought it was an excellent poll to follow the previous one that focused on how Vegas will return when it reopens, whereas this one will survey how/when you'll return.

The question is: What will you do when the casinos reopen and Las Vegas returns to the "new normal" (whatever that turns out to be)?

A:

Analysis

Yes, most of us will be grateful for emerging on the other end of This Thing, whenever that might be.

And the vast majority of respondents, according to the results of this poll, will wait and see. Choices 2-6 all include "wait" in the text. Will the casinos roll out the red carpet for players and guests when they reopen? This analysis is being updated on a day when the American Gaming Association reports that 52 casinos have reopened nationwide. Since they're all tribal, they're not exactly representative of what's in store from commercial casinos, but so far the pent-up demand is so great and the occupancy restrictions so strict that none of them is running any great deals that we can see. So the wait might be a long one.

On the other hand, some industry insiders are predicting that once the early demand dies down, casinos might enter a doldrums phase, when they'll need to entice customers back with good offers.

In the meantime, will it be safe to travel? That's the $64,000 question. From the results of this poll, however, it looks to us like most respondents won't be participants in this grand experiment, preferring to let others be the guinea pigs.

Time will tell.

    This poll is assinie insanity
Las Vegas will never return to "Normal". Normal being defined as equal to or better than 2019 figures in all areas. Currently the casinos are to reopen at the new date of May 1st 2020 but the virus will continue to spread for many more months with an ever increasing death toll that will scare the public into more social distancing.

    Awakening
Several things that this quarantine has shown me is that I can survive without the casinos and how much money I am able to not spend by not going to the casinos. Those, coupled with the fact that I still would be suspect of catching the virus even though the casinos will be opened, have probably put an end to my casino days. (I am a local.)

    not chosen
I suggested "never return" as my own thoughts were "how did I get so hooked?" and now I realize I don't 'need' casino gambling anywhere to fulfill my life. Of course I WILL return, but I'd suggest that many have gotten casino gambling out of their systems and dream of better ways to spend their money. That's all. "Never return" doesn't fit with the question, so I'm fine with it not being selected as an option. I hope Las Vegaes thrives well into the future.

    Vaccine
Didn't see a choice for waiting until the Medical establishment has come up with a vaccine for the virus. That would be my pick. I will not be travelling until I know things will be safer.

    We'll be back
Actually, the real answer is "I don't know", but then again, that's probably the answer to most speculative surveys. I said that after we wait a little to see what deals are offered, because freebies sure are an incentive to go, whether or not there was a crisis like this. But I would say to those who say they have found they don't need to come, I challenge you to feel the same way AFTER the casino experience becomes available again. It;s easy to say you don't need it or miss it when it's not available anyway. They will do everything to lure us back, and ultimately, most of us will bite.

Will rebook our April 29- May 4 trip by April 28, shooting for June 24-July 1, if not will shoot for Sept28-Oct2, everyone must make a decision they are comfortable with. Let all of us be tolerant. Love my Las Vegas.

    I'll be back.
I'll definitely continue making trips to Vegas. I love the place. Have friends to visit, people to watch, meals to eat that taste better in Vegas, and a little winning to do. Might even tryout a busking circle.

Will be back in December if it is open
While a vaccine may be a year+ away, I have hopes that all of us who have not yet gotten the virus will be on regular, preventive, doses of Malaria medicine like they do on South America and Africa. If this prevents the virus, I'm in for my next Vegas trip in December!

    As soon as I can!
Just booked for June 12th, hoping there will be open casinos and hotels by then. If I need to reschedule out another month because they aren't open yet I will, I'm ready for a vacation!!

    Vegas Died Years Ago
The old Vegas went several years ago when the Strip turned into a huge convention center, and left locals and ordinary gambling visitors in the dust.

Normal for us means how things were a few years ago- no resort fees (since we use a casino/hotel for sleeping and gambling only} We don't use the pool or workout areas. We can do that at home. That is not what we come to Vegas for. We always look for a place without the extra charges(save our funds for gaming). We've been coming to Vegas for over 50 years, but not as often as before because of all the extra charges. We can do day trips to casinos locally.

I agree with taxman. Vegas died years ago when the mob ran it with junkets. Those were the good old days. When Vegas opens up it will be business as usual. Those greedy dudes can't get enough! Resort Fees, Outrageous Paid Valet, Paid Self Parking, now they added 3% food tax at franchised restaurants in their hotel. The taxes on a rental are the close to cost of the rental.Vegas needs a wake up call!!!!

    I'll wait
I will wait until, as Kenny A said, a proven vaccine has been found. I value my life and am not stupid enough to think that everyone who returns to Vegas before a vaccine has been found will be symptom free. Anyone returning prior to a vaccine being found is just playing Russian Roulette with 6 shells in the cylinder.

    "New normal" Vegas
Unfortunately Vegas is NOT going to open May 1. At best it will be Memorial day weekend. I had a trip booked for this weekend until they shut everything down. We also have a trip booked for June 27-July 1 and I'm not confident about that. There will be NO buffets when the casinos open. That will be at least a month later. We are going to see a lot of changes. Let's just hope that among those changes are free parking and no resort fees.

  • Apr-15-2020
    Don't plan just yet
I understand the itch to get back to Vegas ASAP, but I think that those of you who are already making plans to go back to Vegas in a month or two could be setting yourselves up for disappointment. I think you should wait until you know for sure that everything you're looking forward to will be there. If not, you might make the trip, spend your money, find out that the casino isn't all the way back, and then regret your decision.

  • Bumbug Apr-16-2020
    Already planned a trip
I received an e-mail from the Venetian announcing that Tony Bennett would appear for three shows in August. I immediately bought tickets and made flight reservations. I'm hoping things will be close enough to "back to normal" by then that we'll be able to come! If not, at least the airlines are allowing changes and cancellations with no charges or penalties, and hopefully the Venetian will refund my tickets if the show doesn't happen.

    OCTOBER.
I'll expect a few comps from my favorite casinos in Late May. October is 6 months away.It won't return to NORMAL until 2021.

  • Doug Bergman Apr-18-2020
    Touchless gambling
I might bet on sports from an app on my phone but probably not much else. Between the chips, cash, VP screens and buttons, cocktail glasses, elevator buttons, etc., there are way too many transmission vectors for me to feel comfortable gambling until I am vaccinated.

  • Doug Bergman Apr-18-2020
    Sports app betting
If there are any sports to bet on that is. I don't expect to see any for a good long while.

    WE ARE THERE!
Vegas is our decompression. We are both RNs, wife is first line in hospital treating Covid Pts and I’m in home health caring for immunodeficient Pts. Wrap that around your head. And we’re ready for a little break! We have been safe and diligent, and PPE ready. Don’t care if one bar is open and only one person per table, we will make due. Risk for us is equal on all levels. Normal, not normal, what ever, we’re there. (As always safety first/but ready to go)

  • Toad Apr-20-2020
    After awhile
I'll go back when it becomes a deal again. As long as they stick with nickel and diming I will vacation elsewhere.

    Vegas after the Apocalypse
I think that Vegas and the strip may get back to the early days. Where there were good incentives to come back, better payer edge, etc. I read here in comments where people are over their gambling habits, and realize that the money lost could go to things that last, like buying a $1K guitar instead of losing $1K in an hour at the casino. You still have something for your money. I think all casinos will have to do this due to competition for a limited number of gamblers. Used to be that you felt you had a chance to win. Not in the last 7 or 8 years. I think house holds will have to go down to get the gamblers, as they will go where they feel they have a shot. Same for room rates. I think rates go down, free parking and "waived" resort fees are coming. 3/2 black jack will be back. $5 tables for BJ and craps. Competition for a limited numbers of gamblers will dictate this.

I miss the casinos and I will return but there is no sense going back to Vegas immediately. With table games limiting number of people who can sit and every other slot machine turned off it is going to be crazy. People will probably really be having temper tantrums because they can't get on favorite games. I am thinking of waiting until December after Rodeo finals and before Christmas.

  • Jersey Jeff Apr-22-2020
    Back for NFL
Being a California resident and Raiders season ticket holder, I will do whatever is required to allow me to get into that beautiful new stadium. Social distancing, mask, gloves, etc. Same for casinos.

  • Jim Gawura Apr-22-2020
    Health first
I'm local, but before returning to a casino I'll take a wait and see. If there is a second wave if there are reported cases in the casinos. With people from all over the world coming here I think some kind of vaccine will be necessary.

  • steve crouse Apr-22-2020
    NOW
I'd be there now if 10 or 12 casinos w/buffets were open.
    Just imagine.......
    Main Street Station OPEN.
    No lines.
    No waiting.

  • LVChristine Apr-22-2020
    Go back to work
Hopefully, I will have a job to go back to as I work for a Casino. Follow protocols as mandated, and hope for the best

  • Michael Wood Apr-22-2020
    We are comming back!
We are due back June 3rd and look forward to going to Emerald Island playing the slots and having some cold Blue Moon drafts.
Or Green Valley for some Crap table action, Buffet eating, and some cold Modelo's.
    Or Silverton etc. etc.
Hope this type of interruption never happens again.
    Vegas Mike

Will wait for the Medical establishment to find and provide a proven vaccine for the virus before returning to Las Vegas. Can't imagine casinos allowing the wearing of masks or the amount of spacing to be required at table games, slot machines, shows, events, bars, and restaurants. The "New Normal" will take many months or years for acceptance by the average visitor to feel comfortable. Safety and Health concerns will prevail over any "Great Deals" and or "Special Offers" the casino owners will come up with.

  • Susan Johnson Apr-23-2020
    we'll be back
We'll be back. Is the risk so much greater at a casino if I follow protocols than when I'm at the grocery store? Or any of the other businesses that are open? Even though my husband and I are in are late 60s, we do not have any other underlying comorbidities. We will wait until at least August, but that is when we planned to go anyway. We have a family trip to WDW planned for October. I'll pack masks, wipes and sanitizer and be careful. Most people recover, not die.

    The new Vegas
    https://youtu.be/ItE7Q_USZpU
This video is the reality right now. Forget about your memories of the past. When Vegas opens, it will be a different town as long as this Virus is still around. I have been coming to this town almost 70 years and thought I have seen everything. I have seen so many changes over the years, and this will be one more.
