One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is about how the rental car companies are faring in the new Lyft-Uber and paid-parking age. It’s difficult to answer from available evidence, which is sparse and sketchy, so we thought we’d go to the source and find out if and how your transportation habits have changed since ride-sharing has taken over the world and paid parking has taken over the Strip.
Check as many of the following options as apply to you and, and always, supplement your responses with comments if you have more to share on this subject. Thanks in advance for voting and weighing in!
| I generally walk from place to place. |

| Yes, I still rent a car. |
| I use Uber and/or Lyft. |
| I use a combination of walking, cabs, Monorail, and/or bus, depending on where I’m going. |
| I take cabs. |
| I drive to Las Vegas and use my own vehicle to get around. |
| I stopped renting cars when paid parking was instituted on the Strip; it’s cheaper and easier to use alternatives. |
| I take the Deuce bus up and down the Strip and to and from downtown. |
| I take the Monorail. |
| I seldom leave the property where I’m staying, so I have few transportation needs. |
| I’m comped limo service by the hotel where I stay or I treat myself to a limo if I need to get around. |

One out of five people walk, but their two feet aren't necessarily their only means of transportation. Still, this indicates that many respondents stay on the Strip or downtown and get around without wheels. This is supported, at least in part, by the 82 voters who pick a property and mostly remain there.
It's interesting to us that the Uber/Lyft crowd and taxi veterans are just about equally matched, though Uber had a 26-respondent lead. Taxi prices aren't coming down, but it's easier than ever to get one; over the past couple of years, the cab companies have flooded the streets with cabs (up nearly 40% than before Uber/Lyft arrived on the scene).
Even though the poll shows that walking, combined with the occasional ride-share or cab fare, definitely beats renting a car and paying for gas and parking, 18% of respondents still rent. We're not surprised; Vegas is much easier to get around in a car, especially if you frequent locals casinos and neighborhood restaurants and bars.
That's also why the sixth-place finisher, with 222 votes, was people who drive in in their own cars. This is mostly from southern California, of course, but also Arizona, around Nevada, and Utah.
There was a good showing for the Deuce and Monorail and even a handful of big-time players with casino limos at their disposal.
The comments too, as always, are instructive, especially all those who won't pay for parking or are comped through the credit cards or players club tiers. And it sounds like there are some good car-rental deals, while some cab drivers are still long-hauling unsuspecting passengers.
Thanks, everyone, for your votes and feedback.
