Poll : 28 March - 10 April 2018

Q:

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is about how the rental car companies are faring in the new Lyft-Uber and paid-parking age. It’s difficult to answer from available evidence, which is sparse and sketchy, so we thought we’d go to the source and find out if and how your transportation habits have changed since ride-sharing has taken over the world and paid parking has taken over the Strip.

Check as many of the following options as apply to you and, and always, supplement your responses with comments if you have more to share on this subject. Thanks in advance for voting and weighing in!

Analysis

One out of five people walk, but their two feet aren't necessarily their only means of transportation. Still, this indicates that many respondents stay on the Strip or downtown and get around without wheels. This is supported, at least in part, by the 82 voters who pick a property and mostly remain there.

It's interesting to us that the Uber/Lyft crowd and taxi veterans are just about equally matched, though Uber had a 26-respondent lead. Taxi prices aren't coming down, but it's easier than ever to get one; over the past couple of years, the cab companies have flooded the streets with cabs (up nearly 40% than before Uber/Lyft arrived on the scene).

Even though the poll shows that walking, combined with the occasional ride-share or cab fare, definitely beats renting a car and paying for gas and parking, 18% of respondents still rent. We're not surprised; Vegas is much easier to get around in a car, especially if you frequent locals casinos and neighborhood restaurants and bars.

That's also why the sixth-place finisher, with 222 votes, was people who drive in in their own cars. This is mostly from southern California, of course, but also Arizona, around Nevada, and Utah.

There was a good showing for the Deuce and Monorail and even a handful of big-time players with casino limos at their disposal.

The comments too, as always, are instructive, especially all those who won't pay for parking or are comped through the credit cards or players club tiers. And it sounds like there are some good car-rental deals, while some cab drivers are still long-hauling unsuspecting passengers.

Thanks, everyone, for your votes and feedback.

Yes, I still rent a car.
Yes I still rent a car, but I stay at and visit only Casino's that don't charge for parking.

    No strip
As a local, I avoid the Strip at all costs. Will not pay for parking. EVER.

    No Vegas
After 23 Vegas vacation, the rising resort fees and now paid parking has clearly showed me that Vegas does not want my business anymore. There are plenty of casinos within a 1 to 6 hour drive from where I live to visit. Much cheaper.

To cab or not to cab?
It's not complicated at all. We will use a cab whenever it is late at night or out-of-the-way to use the RTC System. Also, if "Lady Luck" has been kind, we will use cabs a little more. Did you know that if you travel "Gypsy Cab" via Lyft or Uber, (usually) the driver has no insurance? Therefore, you have no coverage if you are injured? Think about that!

I use the WAX to and from airport to downtown.

    Still renting for now
Right now we are still renting a car. In the past we could get rates low enough that the difference between cab rides to and from Downtown from the airport and the car rental fee wasn't that large. However over the last year or two the rates we pay to rent a car have increased significantly. In the past we have used the car primarily to travel between downtown and the Strip to either eat at a restaurant or see a show. Certainly not to gamble. With the implementation of parking fees on the Strip, we are making less trips to the Strip and more to locals casinos and restaurants not on the strip. Going forward I expect our trips to the strip to be limited to seeing a concert or a show, but not much else. If car rental rates continue to be as high as they are now, we will probably start looking at the cost difference between what we would spend with Uber/Lyft for our trips outside downtown and the price we are paying for a rental car.

I visit at least 6 times a year to gamble, see family, and do other things.I prefer to stay at the Rio to avoid the strip crowds. A rental car makes it possible to go where I want, when I want. Im a diamond player at Caesars so parking is free. I however am like many others. If Caesars starts charging me for parking or resort fees on my comped rooms, I will find somewhere else to go. Im tired of the gouging.Uber is an option to and from the airport if Im staying around the casinos.

I also still rent a car, and try to stay at, and only visit, Casinos that don't charge for parking. I also try to be within walking distance of several casinos.

    Ridiculous fees
I'm with rlardie. All those wonderful casinos, bright lights, excellent food, first class entertainment... all paid for with the money they win when we gamble and they STILL want more? Resort fees and paid parking is the most ridiculous GOUGE I've ever encountered. Like I'm so stupid I can't add two and two. I add the room rate and the resort fee and then I have the cost of staying there. Why? Just make the room that price and drop the resort fee. AND... I will never pay to park while I'm spending money at a resort. I'll still rent a car but I refuse to pay to park. How do they think this is a good idea? They get enough of my money as it is.

  • Scot Mar-28-2018
    smart
Used to exclusively use cabs, but after a long-haul and increased pricing, I've started mixing in Uber. Use rental cars to reach to off-strip locations. The strip is becoming a place to stay (entertainment, restaurants, atmosphere) but not a place to play (bad table game limits and rules, bad pay tables on video poker, limited space in sportsbooks).

Still rent a car, but did a cost/benefit analysis. It MAY be cheaper not renting and using Uber & monorail to convention center, especially since I stopped going to CET casinos with their parking fee. I am 100% MGM properties and free parking.

I almost always take the local buses. I stay downtown mostly taking the WAX bus from terminal one to Fremont and 4th. It runs once an hour, takes from 25 to 35 minutes depending on the time of day and it only costs two dollars. Since I am over 60 it only costs one dollar. This bus also stops at Tropicana and LVB so it is convenient to the strip hotels. The bus continues after downtown out to Sun Coast.

    Car, fees chasing us away
We still rent a car as we always do our coupon run and visit casinos that support LVA. We'll eat at them, go to a show at them and make use of their various businesses, to show we appreciate them doing coupons in LVA. That being said....with the cost of rental cars climbing, with the paid parking, with the resort fees (even from CET who had a big campaign, at one time, about having NO RESORT FEES), Vegas is chasing us away. It's almost to the point that we can use Uber/Lyft instead of renting a car. The CLIMBING resort fees are nothing more then a gouge to the customer as is paid parking. I see both of these having a great effect in slowing down folks from going to Vegas, especially with so many other casinos all across the country. No, they aren't "Vegas" but "Vegas" is treating customers like they really don't care if we come there or not. You would think with all the other competition, Vegas would be doing what they could to continue to bring people in. They don't seem to care!

  • Marsha Hocker Mar-28-2018
    No parking fees
I always rent a car because I do not stay on the strip, and mostly visit locals casinos or some place that I do not have to pay to park. Once in a while, I may pay to park on the strip if there is something I really need to do. I agree that the resort fees and parking fees are ridiculous, since we spend plenty of money gambling. These places are just greedy and we should not give them more money for things that were always free for many many years.

  • JP Mar-28-2018
    Drive
Friends who live in LV lend me one of their cars while I'm there, so getting around isn't a problem. However, I will NEVER, EVER pay a casino to park. I think it's stupid to pay to park when, many times, you lose $$. It's supposed to be fun. Losing is bad enough; paying to do so adds insult to injury.

  • Luis Mar-28-2018
    I DRIVE BUT....
I drive to Vegas, but, I try to park where I stay ( mostly out of strip hotel - casinos), and if and only if I have something to do at the strip do I walk or take a shuttle there, I no longer stay at strip places becauyse of their parking charges and other charges. They are just not fair, and why do they do it?, because they can and because we are going to pay. Well, I'm not, I'm going off strip until they change their policies ( ups that means I'm no longer going to the strip period jajaja)

    A Tough One
Interested to see the results for this one. Not sure what I'll do next trip - I used to rent a car always, but now, I'll have to do some figuring and logistics first.

    STAY OFF THE STRIP!
I've been coming to LV long before the LVA existed. I now stay off the strip! Neighborhood casinos are far better,I do however go down to Main Street Station and a California, I do enjoy those two casinos, Binion's is okay too.next year I plan to stay in Las Vegas for three months, January February and March.CAN'T WAIT!!!

  • Walter Funsch Mar-31-2018
    car rental
I still rent a car, and as I get older (64 now) the strip just does not appeal to my wife or I at all. We stick with the "locals" & have much more fun there.

  • Judy Anderson Mar-31-2018
    Vegas is running tourists out!
I do still rent a car. But I only use it to and from the airport and if I drive out of town. I stay in a hotel at city center. Then I can walk to where I want to go. I’m spending less and going to Vegas less. Hope the parking rates and the resort fees are working for you.

    Car rental
I only rent a car to go out of town for a day or so like a trip to area 51 etc.

  • JoEllen Apr-01-2018
We still rent a car as we fly from NY State and often combine Vegas with another area, such as Az. This trip coming up. We get free rooms off strip and in Henderson and we enjoy it much more than deal with the congestion and trying to find a spot that’s in a good location. We stayed for 1 night mid strip at Christmas just because our daughter in law had never been to Vegas, and we won’t be doing that again any time soon. By the time we paid the resort fee and parking it was ridiculous. Very sad. We will probably park behind the Linc when we are there and walk around that area. We got an amaz8 g deal on the car- picking it up in Phoenix and dropping it off in Vegas- $143 for the week. Definitely worth it for 4 people getting around.

    Rental Car:
I visit vegas about 5 timer per year, and have done so for the past 6 years.
I have seen the gouging with "resort fees", and now parking. getting out of hand. When there on business or pleasure, I AVOID going to places that charge for parking.
I will drive to a no charge hotel and either walk or tram it to other casinos.
it is beginning to feel like LV is not a bargain anymore... SAD.

We still rent a car. We stay in Vegas for six days and spend only one day on the Strip. Why? UNREASONABLE parking and valet fee's!!!

  • bubbabeer1 Apr-04-2018
    hate all fees
YES But will stop soon if the city of Lv keeps gouging us on the taxes and fees on a rental cars 1/3 to half the cost of a car rental in vegas. I have already spent less time in Vegas because of this

  • bantam32 Apr-04-2018
    We still rent a car
My husband and I come to Vegas once, maybe twice a year and we always rent a car for a 5 night stay. I have never paid over $200 for this (all inclusive). I was worried with this trip coming up in mid April and booked about 6 weeks ago with payless at $225 then it was lowered to 175 and now I have $149!!! That is including all the fees and taxes and pay when I get there for a full-size car. We never pay for parking except once, before I was aware that Mandalay Bay charged. We went to the Gospel Brunch with the LVA coupon. The next year we parked at Tropicana and walked over to the Excalibur and trammed to the MB for the Gospel Brunch. I will never pay for parking at a casino again! We now stay at locals casinos, my favorite being The Orleans. They comp us with rooms and we love it there! We like to drive everywhere and visit the various attractions and surrounding Mountains. We never run out of new things to do! We do the majority of our gambling at night.

    The Infamous Long Haul
In the 18 years and 28 visits, we have only ben "long-hauled" twice and it was so obvious as he looped around the mixing bowl. I did not tip. Once we were sort of long hauled to Downtown, but the cabbie might have actually been trying to avoid rush hour "wait time" at traffic lights?

  • Llew Apr-14-2018
    Mixed bag
I always used to rent a car but the prices have been way too high in the last few years. I actually drove from Pennsylvania this year! I stayed in town for five weeks, so it was cheaper to drive than to rent a car for that long.
Thanks to Barge, I was able to stay with friends along the way, so no hotel expenses. Sam's Club card saved me a bundle on gas. And it was so great having my own car!
For visits of a week or two, I'll stay Downtown part of the time. I don't need a car there. If I can find a decent rate, I'll rent for about a week so I can stay/play at locals casinos. Love them!
Hate the Strip casinos so I avoid it except to visit the Bellagio Conservatory and Caesars buffet. I can park free with my Diamond (Harrahs) and Gold (MGM) cards.
Just got my senior pass so will start using RTC.
Love the idea of flying into other airports and renting a car from there. I will definitely look into this on my next trip. Thanks for the suggestion.

Should get free parking if guest
I hate paid parking but understand the need for it because of event parking. What I cannot understand is why they don't take care of paid hotel guests and gamblers. They should validate all parking for the duration of your stay and for a certain amount of credits played. Until then I plan my stays around free parking.
